Chinese 2202 is the second semester of the intermediate course in spoken and written Mandarin. Like Chinese 2201, this course emphasizes both conversation and reading. Students in this course will move from learning individual Chinese characters to reading Chinese texts. Therefore, be prepared to read a lot and talk about the content of the reading in class. Prerequisites for the course are a grade of at least B in Chinese 2201. Students who haven’t taken Chinese 2201, but have received permission to enroll from the instructors through placement testing are required to learn the first 13 lessons of the textbook, which have been completed by 2201 students. Consult with the instructors if your grade is lower than B in Chinese 2201 but you are still interested in taking this course. . What level can students reach after taking Chinese 2202? After taking Chinese 2202 students are expected to be able to handle most daily conversation with moderate fluency. Students should be able to read with comprehension texts with narrative content but designed for Chinese language learners. Students should also be able to write letters and diaries. Finally, students should be able to express views on serious, topical issues in increased detail. 1 What textbooks and teaching materials are used in Chinese 2202, and how are they used? The textbook and supplementary materials for this course are: 1. A New China, Intermediate Reader of Modern Chinese By Chih-p’ing Chou, Joanne Chiang, and Jianna Eagar. 2. WAL, A New China Dialogues By Felicia Qiuyun Teng The textbook and the audio material should be used together at the same time. Before coming to class students should prepare the assigned lesson by listening to the audio material at the same time as reading the lesson. Only in this way will students learn to use actively the reading comprehension material during class discussions. The textbook and the dialogues are accompanied by audio material. Students can listen to the audio material on line at: http://www.lrc.cornell.edu/medialib/ch/mne The code for the textbook is: mne The user name and password are mne wal.lrc.cornell.edu What do students of Chinese 2202 do in class? Students will use varied methods in class to practice vocabulary and sentence patterns, as well as to learn conversation skills. These methods include paired dialogues, role play, group discussion, debate, acting out situations, and practice in both oral and written translation. What should students do to fulfill course requirements? 1. Students are encouraged to attend every class, and should come to class prepared to participate actively in class. Students will gain 3 points for excellent performance each class (the first week and exam days won’t be counted in, see Chinese 2202 overview for details). For each time students are late to class, not prepared, or perform poorly, students will receive less than 3 points. Missing 5 2 classes without acceptable reason will cause the grade to be lowered one level. Missing more than 10 classes will result in an automatic fail. 2. Essays should be handed in to the instructors follow the arrangement (see Chinese 2202 overview for details). Some performance points will be taken off for not handing in the essay, or not handing in it on time. 3. Students should submit regular homework assignments to the instructor on time. Some performance points will be taken off for not handing in the homework, or not handing in it on time. 4. In addition to a pop quiz for each lesson, there will be five unit tests, three oral tests, and a final examination. Make-ups will not be given for pop quizzes. (See grading system for details.)
