Checklist for Faculty KEY WORDS TO WORKING WITH STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: COMMUNICATION & CONFIDENTIALITY What are the legal guidelines that refer to professors being required to modify curriculum and teaching? Faculty members are not required to make modifications that fundamentally alter the nature and content of a course. They are not required to provide accommodations that have an adverse impact on the integrity of the academic program. Students are obligated to meet essential program requirements and are not entitled to accommodations that will eliminate, modify or fundamentally alter those requirements. 1. Follow recommended accommodations as stated in the student’s accommodation letter from the ADA Counselor. 2. Discuss with the ADA Counselor any doubts or questions you might have concerning the suggested accommodations. 3. Meet and discuss the accommodations with the student. Never suggest: o That the student does not need to visit the ADA Counselor. o That the student does not need an accommodation. o That the student does not need to go to the Student Achievement Center for tutoring or testing (unless other arrangements have been agreed upon for testing). o That you do not have to abide by the requested accommodations. Do Not: o Ask for medical documentation, or demand that a student reveal their disability. o Establish your own accommodations without notification by a signed accommodation letter from the ADA Counselor. o Discuss the student with other students or faculty members. o Make predictions about what a student will or will not be able to accomplish in the classroom or the field of study.
