Abstract for Cheryl Schwartz, DVM
Title of Presentation: Holistic Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Hospice Care
Hospice care is and always has been an integral part of Holistic Veterinary Medicine.
The complementary modalities used include energy medicine techniques such as
Chinese Medical acupuncture, acupressure and massage, as well as Reiki, aroma and
sound therapy. Chinese medical protocols also use herbal medicines and nutritional
therapy—all to restore balance and optimize health for the patient on all levels of
healing. Holistic care is used preventatively for longevity and quality of life, as well as to
relieve pain, support the patient during chemotherapy, and when Western protocols are
neither available nor well tolerated. The presenter will discuss acupressure points for
support of the immune system, as well as massage techniques for relieving pain and
digestive upset, foods to help temperature regulation, and color therapy for emotional
support.
