PRE-AP English Book Report Assignment
Open Mind Diagram Directions:
DUE: Wednesday, Dec. 18th
1) Give this open mind diagram a title—let the reader know if it is a general look at the
character as a whole or if it is the character’s mindset/personality at a particular moment in the
novel.
2) Add three images that symbolize the character. Images may be drawn, cut outs, computer
graphics, or photographs.
3) Brainstorm 12 statements around the images. Around each image write four brainstorm
statements (three words or less) that capture the character’s personality and frame of mind.
4) Give two quotations. Directly quote two sentences that clearly represent the character’s
attitude and actions. ***Be sure to include the page number the quote came from (#)
Guidelines:
* Arrange the images, brainstorms and quotations inside the open-mind to make a clear thought
* Quotations, images and brainstorms must all fit a central idea, point, or theme
* Must be colorful
* No lined paper
* Be creative and unique
Journal Entries
Write three journal entries that the
story's main character might have kept at
the beginning, middle, and ending of the
book's events.
Each journal entry should be at least 5
sentences (1 paragraph). Remember that
the character’s thoughts and feelings are
very important in a diary. Try to reveal
character development through these
entries, showing how the character
changed during the novel.
Also use the journal entries to explain
important or pivotal elements of the plot.
Share through the journal entries what
the main character’s motivations may
have been for their actions.
Grading Rubric:
Open Mind Diagram= 70 points (Title, 3 images, 12 statements, 2 quotes, overall neatness)
Journal Entries= 30 points (3 entries, paragraph length, show character development and plot)
Total Points Possible = 100 x 2= 200 points (+ or – Page requirement of 300 pages)
Remember- Don’t choose a book that has been made into a movie! Book checks will be
Tuesday, Oct. 29 for 10 points.
