Topics:
I)
Assessment
A) The Educational Oversight Group will meet on Thursday, April 8, 10-11:30
a.m., EpiCenter 1-324. Maggie will find out if the Critical Thinking
Subcommittee should meet beforehand in order to report to Ed. Oversight.
B) Assessment Rubric for Critical Thinking (ARC)
1) Jesse Coraggio completed the report from the scoring workshop held on
11/20/09. Maggie shared the report at the ART Retreat on 1/29/10.
2) Janice and Jesse met with Jane Till on 1/25/10 to discuss collecting
samples of students work from the Ethics ARC assignment. Jane
relayed concerns from faculty regarding scoring/grading, which were
relieved when the concept of the ARC Scoring Workshop was clarified.
Jesse will meet with the Ethics faculty on Friday, March 26, 2010.
3) An ARC Scoring Workshop is scheduled for Friday, November 12, 12:00
p.m.-4:00 p.m., EpiCenter. Maggie will mention the need for a
facilitator to Jesse, and Janice will follow-up with Kay Burniston.
4) ARC Scenario-Writing workshop at the Faculty Champion Meeting
Friday, May 28? Maggie will discuss this with Jesse.
5) Nursing has administered their ARC scenario and held a scoring event.
Janice has downloaded student assignments. Follow-up?
6) Gail will begin a process to revise the ARC. Janice will get Gail a copy of
the Ethics ARC.
C) Critical Thinking Assessment Test (CAT)
1) Janice has met with all but one instructor to drop off the tests, to review
the directions for administering the CAT, and to answer any questions
they may have. Janice will administer the CAT to the remaining
instructor’s class on February 9.
2) Instructors will administer the CAT during the month of February, and
Janice will follow-up to pick up the completed tests.
3) A CAT Scoring Workshop is scheduled for Friday, April 23, 8:00 a.m.5:00 p.m., EpiCenter, 1-324. Maggie will mention the need for a
facilitator to Jesse, and Janice will follow-up with Kay.

B) Rubrics
1) More rubric examples: Janice will ask Jesse about his rubric presentation.
Can Faculty Champions create a rubric to assess the Intervention? Look
at other college’s examples:

C) ePortfolio
D) Student Activities – Campuses are conducting various activities relating to
the “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” book. Janice will remind student activities
coordinators about the “Critical Thinking Programs/Events” form and student
survey.
Professional Development
A) Janice met with Matthew Stewart of Staff and Program Development on
1/20/10 and discussed partnering to bring presenters to SPC. Plans are in the
works to have Milton Cox from Miami University present in the spring.
B) Researched ideas were discussed at the Faculty Champion Meeting held on
12/11/09. The following will be contacted about their willingness,
availability, etc.:
1) Richard Paul – Foundation for Critical Thinking (questioning to promote
critical thinking)
2) John Ferron – University of South Florida (critical thinking multiple
choice questions)
3) Dean Kohrs – “Hacking College” (improving teaching)
4) Anthony Nappi & Michael Repici – SPC (student
engagement/collaborative learning)
C) Critical Thinking Institutes
1) The ART Beach Retreat held at the Civitan Beach Club on 1/29/10 was
attended by 33 faculty and staff. Janice has sent Certificates of
Attendance to attendees, thank you notes to presenters, a follow-up
message to the new Faculty Champions, and an article for the Blue &
White to Mike O’Keeffe. Janice will send an evaluation to participants.
2) Spring Critical Thinking Institute (Narrowing the Gulf)

(b) A special invitation-only session for Faculty Champions with
keynote speaker Dr. Barry Stein is scheduled for Thursday,
March 18, 9:30-11:00 a.m., EpiCenter, 1-324.
(c) Janice purchased 10 copies of Dr. Stein’s book, “The Ideal
Problem Solver,” and these are on-loan to Faculty Champions.

5) Faculty Champion Meeting will be held on Friday, February 12, 1:00-3:00
p.m., EpiCenter, 1-304
(a) What is critical thinking – SPC definition, elements/standards
(b) Hands-on with ANGEL Community Groups: “Instructional
Portfolios for Critical Thinking” and “QEP Instructions and
Deliverables.”
(c) Check out Critical Thinking Collections, Guides, and SPOC
equipment.
6) Final Survey for 2009 Faculty Champions – Janice will poll current
Faculty Champions to find out what questions they feel should be on a
final survey for Faculty Champions.
7) Faculty Champion Guide
(a) Janice is planning to create learning modules to help clarify
assessment and activities that promote critical thinking.
E) Academic Roundtables
1) Janice met with Phil Nicotera on 1/15/10 who expressed concern about
two programs having difficulty identifying a Faculty Champion –
Human Services and Medical Laboratory Technology – because those
programs do not have any full-time faculty. Subsequent discussion with
Kay Burniston and Gail has concluded that an exception for these two
programs will be allowed so that their academic leads, who also teach
for the program, will serve as Faculty Champions.
2) Janice met with Nerina Stepanovsky and EMS faculty on 1/19/10 to
discuss the critical thinking initiative and the selection of a Faculty
Champion.
3) Janice met with Respiratory Care, Physical Therapist Assistant, and
Funeral Services faculty on 1/20/10 to discuss the critical thinking
initiative and the selection of a Faculty Champion.
Critical Thinking Resources
A) Gateway Website
1) Janice followed-up with Faith Ocasio about repairing the search feature,
and is still awaiting a response.
2) Donna continues to work on consolidating and organizing the listing of
library resources: books, journal articles, Web sites, ebooks, and
videos.
B) RLO’s
1) RLO Workshop for 2010 Faculty Champions Friday, June 11?
C) Instructional Portfolios
1) Karen and Janice are investigating the potential of Google Docs for
making the Instructional Portfolio Evaluation document more
interactive.
2) Janice will follow-up with 2009 Faculty Champions about the completion
of their Instructional Portfolios.
3) Janice has created Instructional Portfolio templates for the new disciplines
in ANGEL, and has provided the 2010 Faculty Champions access to
