Credits: 3 Teacher guidelines The following guidelines are designed to ensure that teachers can carry out valid and consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource. Teachers need to be very familiar with the outcome being assessed by Achievement Standard Latin 90866. The achievement criteria and the explanatory notes contain information, definitions, and requirements that are crucial when interpreting the standard and assessing students against it. Context/setting This activity requires students to produce a portfolio of examples where Latin is used in a modern context. The student collects and records examples over the course of one term. The student discusses each example to show reflections on the original meaning and the connections to its modern usage. Students are to collect at least twelve pieces. The portfolio needs to reflect the student’s Latin knowledge and ability to see the connections between the origins of Latin words, phrases, and images and their use in the world today. Conditions This is an individual assessment activity. The students complete the portfolio over the course of one term, in their own time. The pieces of writing in the portfolio can be written by hand or electronically. Resource requirements Students can complete their portfolio using classroom notes, grammar references, word lists, dictionaries, and material from the Internet, media, or libraries. Students are expected to appropriately reference all resources used, and include a bibliography within the portfolio. The bibliography does not form part of the assessment. Student instructions Introduction This assessment activity requires you to put together a portfolio of examples of Latin in use in the present day, showing how and why they are relevant to the modern world. You can submit your portfolio in writing or electronically. You have one term to complete your portfolio. Your teacher will give you some class time, but you complete most of your work in your own time. Your teacher will specify a due date. You will be assessed on how well you understand Latin that is in current use, including its relevance to the modern world. Task You may use classroom notes, grammar references, word lists, dictionaries, and material from the Internet, media or libraries to help you complete this work. Magnum ice cream is named from the Latin adjective magnus, -a, -um, meaning “great” or “big”. It is the neuter form of the adjective. It is a word that is used in Latin to denote importance. The Latin also has the meaning of “full”. Maybe this meaning is meant to refer to the taste of the ice cream. This word may also have been chosen to say that if you buy a Magnum ice cream you are getting a good deal, because it is a thing of both great taste and size. This Latin word may have been used to show the superiority of Magnum ice cream over other brands. It is therefore an ice cream to be taken seriously. Pompey’s nickname was Magnus – “Pompey the Great” because he was a truly great Roman, even though he opposed Julius Caesar in the civil war. Magnus, -a, -um in Latin also has the meaning “full” and this may refer to the taste of the ice cream. Maybe this word was chosen to say that if you buy a Magnum ice cream, you are getting a good deal, because it is a thing of both full taste and great size.
