Teacher guidelines
The following guidelines are designed to ensure that teachers can carry out valid and
consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource.
Teachers need to be very familiar with the outcome being assessed by Achievement
Standard Latin 90866. The achievement criteria and the explanatory notes contain
information, definitions, and requirements that are crucial when interpreting the
standard and assessing students against it.
Context/setting
This activity requires students to produce a portfolio of examples where Latin is used
in a modern context. The student collects and records examples over the course of
one term. The student discusses each example to show reflections on the original
meaning and the connections to its modern usage.
Students are to collect at least twelve pieces.
The portfolio needs to reflect the student’s Latin knowledge and ability to see the
connections between the origins of Latin words, phrases, and images and their use in
the world today.
Conditions
This is an individual assessment activity.
The students complete the portfolio over the course of one term, in their own time.
The pieces of writing in the portfolio can be written by hand or electronically.
Resource requirements
Students can complete their portfolio using classroom notes, grammar references,
word lists, dictionaries, and material from the Internet, media, or libraries.
Students are expected to appropriately reference all resources used, and include a
bibliography within the portfolio.
The bibliography does not form part of the assessment.
Additional information

Magnum ice cream is named from the Latin
adjective magnus, -a, -um, meaning “great” or
“big”. It is the neuter form of the adjective. It is a
word that is used in Latin to denote importance.
The Latin also has the meaning of “full”. Maybe
this meaning is meant to refer to the taste of the

Evidence/Judgements for

For example (one piece of Latin in current use):
Magnum
Magnum ice cream is named from the Latin
adjective magnus, -a, -um, meaning “great” or
“big”. It is the neuter form of the adjective. It is a
word that is used in Latin to denote something of
importance and worth, and even includes the idea
of “lofty”. Pompey’s nickname was Magnus –
“Pompey the Great” because he was a truly great
Roman, even though he opposed Julius Caesar in
the civil war.
Magnus, -a, -um in Latin also has the meaning
“full” and this may refer to the taste of the ice
cream. Maybe this word was chosen to say that if
you buy a Magnum ice cream, you are getting a
good deal, because it is a thing of both full taste
and great size.

This Latin word may have been used to show the
superiority of Magnum ice cream over other
brands. This name suggests that it is an important
ice cream and therefore should be taken seriously,
particularly if you want the best. The neuter form of
the adjective may have been selected for its
sound. It is not as harsh sounding as the
masculine magnus.
It also rhymes with words like “yum” and this could
be useful in marketing ice cream.
Final grades will be decided using professional judgement based on a holistic examination of the evidence provided against the criteria in the
Achievement Standard.
