Newsletter No. 6 – Friday, 8th October 2010 Dear parents, pupils and governors, Do You Really Need a Paper Newsletter? Many of you will be aware that the weekly newsletter is put on our website every Friday. In order to save paper and avoid letters going astray, we would like as many families as possible to opt for not being sent a paper letter. Please could you complete and return the reply slip below to let us know your wishes. We sometimes attach circulars to the letter, these would continue to be sent home by ‘pupil post’ and we would indicate on the letter if anything extra was being sent home. Our website is: www.singleton.w-sussex.sch.uk Please Use Email If You Can Some parents already use email to correspond to us (e.g. notes about absence, etc.) - please feel welcome to do so instead of returning reply slips. If you would like us to correspond to you, please write your email address on the reply slip, or email us and tell us! The email address is: office@singleton.w-sussex.sch.uk Choir Performing in the Cathedral Next Friday 15th October, our school choir will be taking part in a special service in Chichester Cathedral. The service starts at 1.00pm and parents are invited to attend and take children home afterwards. Please confirm on the reply slip that you will be attending. The children will be travelling to the cathedral in the morning in cars. They will have a rehearsal and will have their packed lunch there. (If your child has school dinners, please cancel the meal for that day.) Lost Uniforms Nearly every day, we have parents asking us about missing items of uniform. We have a box of items in the office, many of which are not named. Please remember to name uniform so that it can be returned to its owners. Walk to School Week Next week is International Walk to School Week: during the week all schools are encouraged to promote sustainable methods of travelling to and from school. All the children watched a presentation in assembly about this on Wednesday when they were reminded about environmentally friendly ways of travelling. Our school travel plan working party attended the assembly and is keen to support our endeavours. Next week especially, please can all parents try to help children by encouraging them to walk all the way to school or part of the way. Even if you live outside the village, the car can be parked a short walk away from the school. We would like to encourage drivers to park in The Leys (or further away) rather than the layby, leaving the layby for parents of babies and toddlers. As well as encouraging walking, it will also be much safer by avoiding unsafe practices such as turning in the layby or gates and obstructing the gates. Some of our governors will be available to monitor the impact of walk to school week. Governors Not all parents may be aware of who our governors are. For your information, they are: Chair of Governors: Mr Malcolm Scott. Vice Chair/ Foundation Governor: Mr Geoffrey Morris. Parent Governors: Mrs Emma Main, Mr Andrew Bradshaw, Mrs Tania Pons and Mr Nick Conway. Community Governors: Mrs Elaine Kelly, and Mrs Andi Wilson. Local Authority Governors: Mrs Jan Elliott and Mrs Malcolm Scott. Ex-officio Governor: Rev Richard Woods. Mrs Marion Barker REPLY SLIP Name of child: ……………………………………………… Please tick or delete: I would like to access the newsletter via the internet. I would like to correspond via email. My email address is : …………………………………………………………………………………. Choir Visit to the Cathedral I give my permission for ………………… to attend the service. I will attend the service & take my child home. I am unable to attend the service, and have arranged for ……………………………………………. to collect my child. Wednesday 6th October 2010 I visited the school this morning to review the parking issues. Unfortunately it was raining which probably did not give me a true picture. Nevertheless, I have again witnessed vehicles turning in the road and just pulling out in front of other vehicles and stopping in the middle of the road to drop off children. I also saw a parent blocking the school entrance to drop a child and mother, then turning the vehicle and switching off the engine, partly obstructing the school entrance. In all cases there was space in the layby. Please consider the safety and welfare of the children as it is paramount. Malcolm Scott Chair of Governors
