Topic: Senior Prom Deposits
Interviewed: Mrs. McGill, Junior Class Adviser
How many people put deposits down as of the deadline (May 28th, 2010)?
504 juniors put deposits down which is much more than the number of students who put
deposits down for junior prom. Many students utilized the option of purchasing couples
tickets (guaranteed seat for you and your date).
Did we extend the deadline for last minute students?
No. We had a couple of people who brought them yesterday (Tuesday, June 1st), but they
emailed us over the weekend so we knew in advance to reserve their deposit.
What are your goals for the senior prom deposit process?
The whole reason for the deposits is to give the students who want to go the opportunity
to go. We need a number for deposits in order to plan ahead of time what kind of venue
to reserve. It also gives us a better range to work with. If we plan for 500 students and
only 400 are interested, we have to cancel the event. The senior deposits allowed the
junior class to save $25 per person because we were able to save money on the smaller
venue.
How do you feel about breathalyzers at prom?
“I think it’s fair. We take random students out of a certain number of groups and
breathalyze them.” Breathalyzing students discourages students from drinking before
prom and making the whole prom experience much safer.
Will there be a lottery for those who did not put deposits down?
Only if we end up with kids who want their deposits back” In other words, the number of
deposits we receive is the number of seats we’re going to work with. Therefore, only if a
student who put a deposit down wants his or her deposit back will there be open seats.
Do you agree with the dancing or explicit lyrics at prom?
As long as it’s within reason. You guys are 17 and 18 years old so you’re old enough to
know what’s appropriate or not. If certain songs are on the radio then they’re appropriate
enough at prom. I did not see any inappropriate dancing where I felt uncomfortable about
the couples’ dancing.
What were your overall thoughts about this year’s junior prom?
I thought it was great. There were no problems and everyone seemed to have a good
time. We were nervous about the food and service because it was the first time we’ve
used that venue, but everything was great.
