May 11, 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, With the end of the school year fast approaching, many of our students are making plans to attend our prom which will be held from 4:30 until 7:00 in the gymnasium at BCI on Friday, June 12th. In addition to searching for that perfect dress and getting fitted for tuxes, our students are also making choices about pre-prom and post-prom activities. With that in mind, I would like to remind you that the Upper Canada District School Board has a zero-tolerance policy with respect to the use of alcohol and/or drugs at school events. I believe that our school prom should reflect the values and core beliefs of our school community and that it should be a safe and respectful finale to an enjoyable and productive senior year for our graduating class. It is for this reason that I am asking for your support in ensuring that your sons and daughters comply with the zero tolerance policy at the upcoming prom. I would also like to be up front in communicating that students who violate the policy will be subject to regular school disciplinary action, including suspensions from school and all school-related activities. It is important to note that student safety is our first priority and that this policy will be enforced out of concern for the well-being of our students. In addition, I would like to point out that post-prom activities are not school sanctioned events. Many of you may be aware of a post-prom letter that was written by students and shared with other students recently. The letter clearly states that all students will be required to pay a fee for admission bracelets and refreshments. The letter also asks students for their Health Card numbers and it outlines a disclaimer with respect to school and Board liability. As this is not a school organized activity, the post-prom party is not an event that our school endorses. I am confident that with your support we can make the 2015 BCI Prom a very fun and memorable evening. If you have any questions regarding our upcoming prom or the expectations that are in place for our students, please feel free to contact me at the school phone number (613) 345-5641 or by email at bill.loshaw@ucdsb.on.ca. Sincerely, Bill Loshaw Principal
