PRESS RELEASE PRESS RELEASE Dürr Ecoclean: Innovative application-matched cleaning solutions for any requirements Performing part cleaning in a more efficient, reliable and sustainable manner Filderstadt (Germany) / June 9th, 2015 – Part cleaning is an activity aimed at dependably achieving the necessary cleanliness standard for downstream processes that is key to delivering high quality and functional reliability. On the other hand, each cleaning operation should be as cost-efficient and sustainable as possible. Dürr Ecoclean addresses these needs with its extensive range of innovative equipment for solvent and water-based cleaning. Whether the application is about coarse, intermediate or fine cleaning, these systems provide an improved cleaning quality and superior process reliability while saving costs and resources at the same time. Regardless of the industry and cleaning task involved, there exists no 'one-sizefits-all' solution when it comes to achieving an optimum match of the cleaning process, equipment and process technology. Instead, it is recommended to consider the entire manufacturing workflow. Criteria include the materials to be cleaned, the part size and geometry, the type and amount of contaminants, the throughput and flexibility required and the specified limits for particulate and/or filmtype contamination. But there are other questions too, e.g.: At which point of the manufacturing sequence does contamination of the part occur, and with what? Is it necessary to remove contaminants immediately, e.g., in order to safeguard the quality of the next processing step? Is there a risk of cross-contamination because Dürr Ecoclean GmbH Marketing Mühlenstraße 12 70794 Filderstadt parts of different materials – e.g., steel, aluminium and non-ferrous metals – are to Tel +49 711 7006-0 Fax +49 711 703674 be cleaned in one single system? info.filderstadt@ ecoclean.durr.com www.durr-ecoclean.com 1 PRESS RELEASE In selecting a cleaning medium and the associated equipment technology, basically the 'like dissolves like' principle of chemistry applies. For water-based (polar) types of contamination such as coolant and lubricant emulsions, polishing pastes, additives, salts, abraded particles and other solids, aqueous cleaning agents are typically employed. For mineral oil based (non-polar) contaminants such as machining oils, greases and waxes, a solvent (chlorinated hydrocarbon, non-halogenated hydrocarbon or modified alcohol) will normally be the right choice. Forward-looking equipment technology for aqueous cleaning processes Aqueous part cleaning with alkaline, pH-neutral and acidic fluids is employed in automotive manufacturing and its supplier industries, in machining shops, in the production of punched, drawn and bent components, and in making medical equipment, mechanical precision parts and optical instruments. Application levels range from coarse to intermediate and, ultimately, fine cleaning. Matching this scope, a broad range of requirements is covered by Dürr Ecoclean's EcoCWave line. Designed for immersion and spraying processes, these systems come with two or three tanks as standard, in line with individual requirements. Unlike the low-mounted rectangular tanks of conventional aqueous cleaning equipment, the tanks are mounted upright and of flow-optimized design. This prevents chip and dirt traps in the tanks. In addition, each tank has its own separate fluid circuit with full-flow and bypass filtration. Thanks to an optimized rollover unit in the work chamber, the fluids and mechanical cleaning devices – e.g., ultrasonic units and spray nozzles – can reach the product effectively from all sides. All this not merely helps to improve cleaning quality but also tangibly increases the fluid lifetime. Non-productive times for filling and draining the tanks and the work chamber are minimized through the use of powerful pumps and large-diameter piping. As a result, product throughput is increased and per-unit cleaning costs are reduced accordingly. In spray cleaning processes, optimized nozzle arrays make for an effective cleaning performance and even shorter cycle times. The EcoCWave's energy-saving performance is also attributable to its variable-frequency driven pumps which provide a need-based adjustment of the volumetric flow rate. Here Dürr Ecoclean sets standards with its EcoCCore machine, a system operating under full vacuum. It owes its performance, on the one hand, to a feature packed standard equipment list which comprises, e.g., two flooding tanks, heat recovery, full-flow and bypass filtration, plus assorted details minimizing non-productive cycle times. On the other hand, the machine cuts per-unit costs due to its high throughput while achieving a superior cleaning quality at the same time. This high quality is attained, among other factors, by an innovative preliminary steam degreasing technology wherein the oilcontaining solvent, contrary to common practice, does not end up in the flooding tank but is directed straight into the distillation unit. The steam pre-degreasing step also provides advantages where high oil input rates are encountered and in cases where the second flooding tank is used for a preservation treatment. Furthermore, the system's ability to combine ultrasound and filtration technology contributes to the superior cleaning quality. Contaminant particles are discharged while the cleaning process is still ongoing. The part movement or positioning capability that is likewise key to a uniformly good cleaning result is achieved via a frequency-controlled rotary drive providing product rotation and precision positioning with a 'soft operating' functionality. Both stainless-steel flood tanks have no in-tank heating components. This design prevents the formation of chip and dirt pockets which might result in re-contamination of the parts. Ultrafine cleaning – a class by itself Ultrafine cleaning – e.g., of optical lenses and wafers, in biocompatible final cleaning of medical products, or in the manufacture of power tools and other parts subject to exceptionally high cleanliness standards – places exceptional demands on the cleaning technology. This is a field in which UCM AG, a Dürr Ecoclean group company, specializes. Their multi-tank cleaning systems are custom-designed and equipped for each given task, e.g., through the addition of multi-frequency ultrasound units. On these machines, every tank features the four-sided overflow developed by UCM. This avoids re-contamination when the parts are lifted out of the bath and prevents dirt pockets from forming inside the tanks. At the same time, a thorough and uniform treatment of each part is ensured. An additional feature helping to meet maximum cleanliness standards is the special tank design. It prevents contaminants – e.g., ultra-fine particles or germs – from accumulating in the tanks, depositing and finally settling on the product. The ideal equipment and process technology as well as process parameters can be effectively and reliably determined through cleaning trials at Dürr Ecoclean's and UCM's test centers.
