COURSE DESCRIPTION
Roles of professional nurse-midwives emphasizing family-centered approach, including
application of population study, sexual and pre-marriage counseling, family planning and birth control,
and Infertility. Normal and deviant growth and development of fetus, placenta, amniotic fluid, fetal
membranes, and umbilical cord. Fetal health assessment. Physical and psychosocial changes during
pregnancy and their impacts on women and families. Health assessment of pregnant women and
families. Health promotion of pregnant women and families. Theories related to labor pain and nonpharmacological pain reliefs. Childbirth preparation for pregnant women and families. Promotion of
attachment and bonding between fetus, mother, and family. Health risk screening during pregnancy,
initial nursing care, and referral for medical care.

Course Objectives: Students are able to;
1. Explain roles of professional nurse-midwives emphasizing family-centered approach,
including sexual and pre-marriage health, family planning, and Infertility.
2. Explain fetal growth and development, factors and prevention of birth defects, promotion of
fetal growth and development, and fetal health assessment.
3. Explain physical and psychosocial changes during pregnancy and diagnosis of pregnancy.
4. Explain health assessment of pregnant women and families.
5. Explain health promotion of pregnant women and families, and promotion of physical and
psychological adaption and attachment of the families.
6. Explain health risk screening during pregnancy, initial nursing care, and referral for
appropriate health care.
7. Explain the principles of childbirth preparation.

EVALUATION: 100%
1. Moral and ethical assessment; (5%)
1.1 Well discipline in being on time for class attendance and assignment submission.
1.2 Perform respect and support others; polite, honesty, no plagiarism, responsibility in
individual and group works.
1.3 Apply ethical principles into the case study.
1.4 Peer group work evaluation
2. Knowledge assessment 60%
Formative Test and summative test —mostly multiple-choice (4-choices) tests, with 5 scores for a
lecture hour. (The CMU Criteria will be formally used as the course grading judgment.)
3. Cognitive assessment 35%
3.1 Formative Test and summative test —mostly multiple-choice (4-choices) tests, with 5 scores for
a lecture hour. (20 %)
3.2 Case study and presentation: to apply the concepts of family planning; prevention of birth
defects and promotion of fetal development, ethical issue relieving minor discomforts, health assessment
and screening, and health promotion. (15%)
For group work assignment: The lecturer divide students into 3 groups, each group consists of 3-4
students. They are assigned to do homework and then sending their homework in a week later; or to work
in the classroom. Each student has to take turn being a leader and member of the group and also give
self-evaluation and peer evaluation every time of working. And then sending their evaluation to the
lecturer at the end of the course.
At the last class each group of the student has to present a selected topic by using appropriate
technique and media. The time allocate is 15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for question.
