(09-18-11) Opposed To Divisive Debate To the Editor: We are opposed to the recent confrontational and divisive approach of the Common Sense Alliance (CSA) and its supporters in the ongoing debate over updates to the Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) and the Shoreline Master Plan (SMP). Of course, they have the right to free speech. However, we don't grant them the right to be uncharitable to our neighbors, especially when they define themselves as a "charitable" organization. For example, in its recent ads in the Journal, this group demonstrated its incivility by showing a snake representing the government of San Juan County coiled around a body representing the citizens of San Juan County. Such an objectionable attitude toward the friends and neighbors who represent us in local government demands a response. The self-proclaimed "Common Sense Alliance" in fact denies such obvious scientific and locally observed events as the recent eelgrass and fish nursery collapses. This group makes no "sense" as they promote destructive land use practices and carry their message by offensive words and attitudes. Our beautiful island deserves protection in areas critical to its and our long-term well-being. You can help counterbalance the inaccurate claims and divisive behavior of the CSA by attending meetings of the Planning Commission and the County Council. These gatherings will deal with updates to the CAO and SMP and will hopefully provide more balanced views on the issues involved. For meeting updates, please email Communications@sanjuanco.com and they will send you public notice of Planning Commission and Council meetings.
