Version 1.1.4 expands functionality to help users choose best breeds for their needs
TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 21, 2011) — Mother Earth News, the longest-running publication dedicated
to sustainable lifestyles, and Funny Farm Industries today launches upgrades to the Pickin’
Chicken app in the Reference section of Apple’s App Store. Download price remains $2.99.
With Pickin’ Chicken, everyone from full-time farmers to backyard chicken enthusiasts and 4-H
members can research breeds from their iPhones, iPads or iPods.
Pickin’ Chicken now features an illustrated guide to 82 chicken breeds and more than 100
varieties with 250-plus updated photos. Users can find the ideal chicken breed for eggs, meat,
personality or any combination based on results from 16 searchable characteristics.
“These upgrades make finding the right chicken breeds for your needs even easier, helping both
new and experienced chicken owners get the most out of owning chickens,” says Bill Uhler,
Mother Earth News general manager.
The app’s “Eggspert” advanced search has added criteria for Comb Type and APA Listing. Users
also can search for characteristics such as Breed Name; Growth Rate; Temperament; Climate;
Heritage/Rare Breeds; Foraging Instincts; Sex Linked; Housing Suitability; and Egg Lay Rate,
Size and Color.
Each search result listing includes a thumbnail photo, the breed name, heritage, icons for egg size
and color, and the weight at harvest time. Selecting any of the breed listings brings up a summary,
as well as a detailed entry on that particular breed of chicken, with full-screen photos and
information from the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy if the breed is rare or endangered.
Pickin’ Chicken also features an editable Favorites library, a browsable alphabetical listing of
chicken types, a glossary of terms, educational resources, tips on chicken care, a link to upload
the user’s own chicken photos, an integrated Twitter link, and an opportunity to subscribe to a
free e-newsletter.
