Teacher’s Guide ELI 80 Video – 20/20 Spring ’05, 1:10-56:30 “Myths, Truths and Looking Good Inside and Out” Example Lesson Plan Objectives (adapted from ELI 80 Goals and Objectives): Students will review pre-listening strategies (having discussions to activate prior knowledge), during-listening strategies (note-taking, making inferences, getting main ideas, getting details), and post-listening strategies (reviewing notes, having group/class discussions) for listening comprehension of an investigative television program. Students will become familiar with English pronunciation for comprehension purposes by being exposed to a variety of accents heard throughout the program. Students will learn to evaluate the contents that they comprehended through guided group discussions. Students will learn to use what they just heard in order to construct their own opinions and actively express their opinions orally. Pre-Viewing Discussion (20 minutes) 1. Give each student a copy of the Pre-Viewing Questions, with the list of 20/20’s Top Ten Myths on back (or place on overhead transparencies). 2. As a class, discuss question one (refer to answer guide). – 2 min. 3. Read over the remaining two questions and ask if there any of them need clarification. 4. Note: You may want to make note of the runner-up myth in case you decide to watch a second segment in a later class. 7. Take a count of how many students are familiar with this myth and how many believe it is true. Viewing the Video (20 minutes1) 1. Give each student a copy of the Comprehension Questions and read over the questions for clarification (refer to answer guide). 2. Locate the segment that the class has chosen to view (refer to Top Ten list for location time on VHS counter). 3. Give students an additional minute or two to finish answering questions after the video has ended. 1 If students need to watch the video a second time, this time will increase by five minutes. If students are interested, let them know that the television show, 20/20, airs on ABC every Friday night at 9pm (Hawaii time). They can check the website to find out what the show will investigate each week, http://abcnews.go.com/2020. Lesson Closure/Materials Evaluation2 (5 minutes) 1. Ask students if they enjoyed the activity. Why or why not? 2. Give the students a moment to think about how this lesson might help them in their academic life and outside of school. Have them share their thoughts with the class. 3. Share some of the learning objectives of the activity and ask the students how successful they thought the lesson was at meeting these objectives. 4. Note any suggestions for the improvement of this material that the students may come up with on the Teacher’s Materials and Lesson Evaluation form. Total lesson time = 60-65 minutes Variations on Lesson Plan: If limited on time, do the pre-view questions in class the day before or as homework. If have extra time, watch two segments and compare the investigation/evidence presented in each and ask which was more convincing and why. Since some myths may be more interesting to one gender or the other, may consider asking the females to vote for one myth and the males the other. 2 May do this orally, through small or large group discussion, or may use material evaluation worksheet.
