ELI 80 Video - PBS Spring ’05, 11:25-36:36 Scientific American Frontiers Teacher’s Guide “Chimp Minds”- Part 2 Example Lesson Plan Objectives (adapted from ELI 80 Goals and Objectives): Students will review pre-listening strategies (e.g., obtaining background information and having discussions to activate prior knowledge), during-listening strategies (e.g. getting main ideas and details), and post-listening strategies (e.g., reviewing notes and having group/class discussions) for listening comprehension of a scientific television program. Students will become familiar with English pronunciation for comprehension purposes. Students will develop their vocabulary needed in academic listening/speaking contexts through listening activities, note-taking, and discussion. Students will learn to evaluate the contents that they comprehended through guided group discussions. Students will learn to use what they just heard in order to construct their own opinions and actively express their opinions orally. Pre-Viewing Activity (10 minutes) 1. In small groups, share answers to the Part 2 vocabulary items. Each group should note any vocabulary words that they are still unsure of. – 10 min. 2. As a class, go over any remaining unclear vocabulary items from Part 2. 3. Ask the class what they most remember from Part 1 of the video and/or from their post-viewing discussions. Viewing the Video (20 minutes1) 1. Give each student a copy of the Part 2 Comprehension and Discussion Questions worksheet and read over the questions for clarification. 2. View Part 2 of “Chimp Minds”. Students should attempt to answer each comprehension question while viewing the video. – 8 min. 3. After the video has ended, allow students an additional minute or two to finish answering the comprehension questions and begin working on the discussion questions. 4. In small groups, share answers to comprehension questions. – 5 min. 5. Optional: If there are still questions that most students are unable to answer, watch the video a second time. – 10 min. 6. As a class, go over the answers to the comprehension questions (refer to teacher’s guide for possible answers). – 5 min. 1 If students need to watch the video a second time, this time will increase by ten minutes. In small groups, share answers to the discussion questions. – 10 min. 2. Share answers to the discussion questions with the rest of the class. – 10 min. 3. If students are interested, let them know that the television show, Scientific American Frontiers, airs on PBS every Sunday afternoon (2pm, Hawaii Time). They can check the website to find out more about the show, http://www.pbs.org/saf/. Lesson Closure/Materials Evaluation2 (10 minutes) 1. Ask students if they enjoyed the activity. Why or why not? 2. Give the students a moment to think about how this lesson might help them in their academic life and outside of school. Have them share their thoughts with the class. 3. Share some of the learning objectives of the activity and ask the students how successful they thought the lesson was at meeting these objectives. 4. Note any of the students’ suggestions for the improvement of this material on the Teacher’s Materials and Lesson Evaluation worksheet. Total lesson time = 60 minutes 2 May do this orally, through small or large group discussion, or may use material evaluation worksheet.
