MESSAGE Swami Vivekananda has always emphasized on the upliftment of the uncared lower masses of India. Swamiji has deeply felt that lower classes have much greater capacity for work and self-reliance. He has also said that if they get opportunity, they will prove their skill. On the basis of these teachings of Swami Vivekananda, Sarada Kalyan Bhandar, totally managed by a dedicated women group, is serving the most underprivileged youth, children and women of some villages in Paschim Medinapore district since 1984. It is now a matter of great joy to know that within this short span of time, Sarada Kalyan Bhandar, has taken up many welfare projects in that region. I hope and pray that by the grace of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, these services will be continued with great success. May Sri Ramakrishna and Holy Mother bless you all is my earnest prayer! Sd/ Swami Atmasthananda (Swami Atmasthananda) Vice-President Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission Prof. Rekha Sarkar General Secretary Sarada Kalyan Bhandar Midnapore SRI SARADA MATH DAKSHINESWAR, KOLKATA PIN-700 076 Phones:(033) 564-6556 564-5411 26.6.2003 MESSAGE I am very glad to know that Sarada Kalyan Bhandar, Midnapore is going to celebrate its 20th Foundation Day on 27th July 2003. I sincerely wish the celebration all success! It is indeed a great achievement for this Organization, which was started as a small welfare center, only 20 years ago. Inspired with Swami Vivekananda’s ideal of selfless service, Sarada Kalyan Bhandar has grown throughout the years into a mighty tree, rendering multiple philanthropic services among the underprivileged women, youth and children, in the fields of education, child development, medical care, rural uplift and other similar welfare activities. Sarada Kalyan Bhandar is really doing wonderful work among the deprived section of our society, helping them in many ways to stand on their own feet. The devoted and dedicated service of its members, and their zeal and faith in the cause are no doubt one of the greatest assets of the Organization. I earnestly pray to Sri Sri Ma Sarada to shower Her choicest blessings on Sarada Kalyan Bhandar and all its members. May the Organization continues to grow and expand its services for the benefit of many more is my heartfelt prayer! Sd/ Pravrajika Amalaprana (PRAVRAJIKA AMALAPRANA) General Secretary SRI SARADA MATH M.V.Rao, IAS DISTRICT MAGISTRATE & COLLECTOR PASCHIM MEDINIPUR 5th July, 2003 I am glad to know that Sarada Kalyan Bhandar, Midnapore, a Public Charitable Trust, will celebrate their 20th Foundation Day in July, 2003 and a souvenir will be brought out on this occasion. This organization works in various areas like education and empowerment of women, health care of rural children and women, care of destitute children, financial assistance to needy meritorious students. I convey my best wishes to the organizers. Sd/ M.V.Rao. (M.V.Rao) 5.07.2003 General Secretary’s Report 2002-03 To Quote Swami Vivekananda – “ The national Ideals of India are Renunciation and service. Intensify her in those channels and rest will take care of itself.” Worship-Love-Service with dedication are all terms carrying the same sense. We differently interpret them and behave in the manner we want to. The profile of a society will change if the inner significance of these three vibrant words be understood and worked out in the context of its true meaning. The gospel of new age is to give shelter and service to the suffering humanity from the curse of poverty and distress, frustration and depression, panic and growing tension prevailing in the ambit of the country. We need to revive the rich heritage of India and scavenge out everything that tarnishes the image of our country. We need an excellent pick up to finalize our track to run fast keeping in view the speedy motion of the Global scenario. We are to restructure the entire society where ninety percent of the population lives in darkness, poverty, ill health and illiteracy. The vital force of the country lies in the strength of youth, women and children of rural India. The entire profile of the country cannot be changed all on a sudden but compassion towards the distressed and faithfulness towards our duty and service, not individually but collectively can be launched to bring change in the society. Sarada Kalyan Bhandar is stepping in its 20th year. Its motto has always been very specifically crystallized through its range of activities in various fields for youth, women and children of backward rural area. The indepth study of the pathos of poor meritorious youth, exploration in the life of child asset and awareness of the helpless condition of women community inspired a group of likeminded educated ladies to work for the underprivileged in the field of Education, Health and Social awareness. We have received unsolicited support from our patrons, sponsors, donors, well-wishers and friends spontaneously which has inspired us to work more vigorously for the cause. Their inspiration is a remarkable indication of public awareness towards the downtrodden of the society and undoubtedly a tremendous tribute paid by the socially aware people to the movement for the helpless community. The true excellence of what has been achieved so far by this organization in these nineteen years is that we could reach the remote corners of the villages and create immense hope in the minds of the villagers for the betterment of their children; we could create a positive faith among youth community that their talent will not be wasted for lack of funds; we could create confidence and conviction among the woman community coming in touch with us that they are the nucleus of the family and the society too. In 1984, Sarada Kalyan Bhandar was registered at Midnapore Sub Registrar’s office with a fixed fund of Rs.5,100/- and a working capital of Rs.1,000/-. At that time we sponsored the education of five college bond girls assuring Rs.50/- only per month for their higher studies. We had then ten sponsors and few potential donors. Since then the Trust is enjoying the benefit of 12A and 80G of the Income Tax Act and also is registered under FCRA by the Home Ministry, Govt. of India. Today the organization holds a fixed fund of Rs.17 lakh 28 thousand 4 hundred one and Rs. 1 lakh 25 thousand is the working capital per month. The total asset value of the organization is Rs. 30 lakh 67 thousand 4 hundred twenty-five and sixty-five paise including land & building. Twelve Patrons, 206 Sponsors, few potential donors and 837 beneficiaries are with us now. Books of Accounts are being audited by Chartered Accountants, D. Desarkar & Co., Midnapore. I profusely thank Mr. Dhananjoy Desarkar for his able guidance. Necessary Reports and Returns are regularly submitted to various concerns as scheduled. SKB is run by a Board of Trustees whom the overall management of the organization is entrusted. A seven membered managing committee with a well-guarded constitution helps the organization grow steadily. Currently Sarada Kalyan Bhandar is working on Five Projects. Higher Education Project provides financial assistance to needy meritorious students for continuing their studies from higher secondary to under graduate & post graduate studies including Medical, Engineering and the like technical and vocational streams. 385 students are under this project and awaiting enrollment of new entrants for the recent publication of Secondary and Higher Secondary results. Financial support to them ranges from Rs.150/- to Rs.1,500/- per month besides books, other subsidiary educational and medical assistance. During the financial year 2002-03, Rs.6 lakh 27 thousand 7 hundred twenty-one and fifty paise is spent for the students under Higher Education Project. A small library with 3 thousand 2 hundred seventy-three books support their academic need. Various competitions, quiz, seminars and symposiums are arranged year round. Eminent educationists are invited as speakers in the seminars for encouraging the young talents. They also participate in the relief programme with full enthusiasm during flood calamity and distribution of clothing to the poor community conducted by Sarada Kalyan Bhandar. Several Memorial Prizes are introduced by some of our well-wishers for the brilliant academic performance of our students. The second major project is Child Welfare. Under this scheme, nine villages – Baishakhipally, Gabnala, Khejurdanga, Nichugope, Hamarpata, Bhagabatipally, Pakhijapally, Rangamati and Indirapally are included covering 452 children with 20 orphans. These children receive free regular remedial coaching for improvement of their studies from Nursery to Higher Secondary level. Physical training, yoga, drawing and music classes are conducted as part of their daily routine for developing their total personality. Study materials, uniform, winter clothing, light Tiffin, milk and fruits are given to children regularly up to primary level. It is mandatory for all local students under our Higher Education project to extend free rural service to these children at Kalyanpith. 56 such student tutors are engaged as teachers in the child project. One project In-charge, two lady Supervisors and six-shift In-charge are overall responsible for day-to-day running of its activities. Children are showing wonderful results in their school examinations. Percentage of success this year is 96.2. Annual function and sports are arranged every year for their encouragement. Health Care Programme for children started in 1999. Regular health measures including supply of medicine, weekly check up etc. are routine work. Dr. B. S. Dash & Dr. Ruma Das are visiting Kalyanpith twice a week for regular treatment of children. I am really grateful to them for their honorary service. In addition, health awareness camps are organized this year in collaboration with Rural Development Association, Midnapore. The year 2003 is a milestone for Child Welfare Project. We have been able to complete the construction of Child Welfare Project Building, Kalyanpith, with the contribution made especially by Asha For Education – NYC/NJ Chapter, Mr. Sudipta K Ghosh, CA, Dipu Ghosh & Dr. Shamali Ghosh of Iceland, Mr. Naren & Rina Gupta, USA and generous contribution received from philanthropic individual donors of our land. The total cost of the building excluding land is Rs.20 lakh 39 thousand approx including a market loan of Rs.4 lakh. I think it will be very much pertinent for me to place here my appeal to all our wellwishers and friends to free me from the burden of loan that I am carrying with stress. I wish to place on records my sincere appreciation for the suppliers of the constructional work who have given immense support to me without giving any pressure to clear their dues during construction. It was on 4th May 2003 that the Building was dedicated to Her Holiness Sri Sri Sarada Devi by Pravrajika Satyaprana Matajee, Sannyasini of Sri Sarada Math & The Secretary of their branch center Ramakrishan Sarada Mission at Thakurnagar, Purba Medinipur. Mr. M.V. Rao IAS, Hon’ble District Magistrate, Midnapore inaugurated the building. The ceremony was presided by Prof. Ananda Deb Mukhopadhyay, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Vidyasagar University in a solemn atmosphere. I am very much thankful to the Authorities of Centre for Advancement of Higher Education, Midnapore for providing us water from their deep tube well for constructional work. I profusely thank Hon’ble District Magistrate, Mr. Rao for making provision of drinking water in the campus of Kalyanpith within such a short span of time without which it would have been very difficult for us to conduct child welfare programme there. All the children of different villages are brought under one roof in the new Child Welfare Building of Kalyanpith. We intend to make it a role model Institution. The total expenditure on children of Kalyanpith during the financial year 2002-2003 is Rs.5 lakh 26 thousand 2 hundred thirty-two and ten paise. Child Welfare Project is mainly supported by Asha for Education - New York / New Jersy Chapter, India Friends Association LA, Street Children International New York, Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Dakshineswar, Kolkata and few well wishers from India and Abroad. Our third project is Women Self Independence Promoting Scheme which covers the overall expenditure of 10 lady students spending Rs.70 thousand 2 hundred ninety during the financial year. Aim of this project is to spread women education, prepare them for economic stability, save waste of talents, eradicate social evils like early marriage, torture and other women atrocities and finally make them aware of their rights and laws existing in their favour. Nineteen women camps are organized this year for population education, childcare, family planning, health education and awareness on legal rights of women. Tremendous response encouraged the organizers and the Rural Development Authorities who collaborated with us in this matter. Gymnasium and scriptural classes for ladies are also conducted every week. Girl Child Efficiency Development Scheme takes the overall responsibility of a girl child from class IV. This project in long term will contribute meaningfully to develop confidence and stability from girl child to womanhood. Rs. 19 thousand 6 hundred forty-four is spent on nine children. All outstation students under higher education project are bound to participate in our fifth project Literacy Drive Programme during two vacations in a year. It will create a long time achievement in fighting illiteracy. Our fund source is only public donation. We need funds for running the projects as well as administrative infrastructure. Under the present global scenario and keeping in mind the increasing number of beneficiaries, sponsor circle and potential donors need to be extended. We live in a society where large section of student community squanders for funds for their education, we live in a society where children suffer from malnutrition and early mortality due to poverty and lack of awareness, we live in a society where helpless women need rehabilitation through income generating scheme. I would like to express my grateful thanks to all our patrons, members, sponsors, friends and well-wishers for their spontaneous support, compassion and tender feelings towards this organization. Their deep emotional identification is our asset. The mission of Sarada Kalyan Bhandar is to dedicate selfless service to the poor, the helpless and the backward. In this context, it will be apt to quote the immortal words of Swami Vevekananda “ the only God to worship is the human soul. If I cannot worship in that, no other temple will be of any advantage.” Friends, let us join our hands and try to shape a model society so that we can at least bring a little difference in some lives. Let Sarada Kalyan Bhandar be a trusted name in this work now and ever. A graduate student answered, “Now, it is impossible to get a job without learning computer.” Another girl said, I will be backdated.” “ My son now is at Mumbai , I want to send email to him.” -replied a housewife. Most of the students said that today, this learning is indispensable and through computer we can grasp our planet in our hand. Yes, today, we see with the astounding progress in science & technology a new era has begun. Since the appearance of the human being in the world, the march of civilization is going on & has been measured by the technological advancement such as stone-era, agriculture-era, industrial-era etc. The amazing developments of science & technology have opened up new horizons like modern medical science, nuclear science, space technology, biotechnology, genetic engineering, computer engineering, communication engineering & many more. With the growth of civilization reaching a population of 4 billion people, the education system, health system, transport system, irrigation system, communication system & many other faculties of the social infrastructure have also expanded to a great extent. The volume of data that is being generated from the above systems is incredible. Processing of this enormous volume of data, converting it into effective knowledge/information and utilizing them for the benefit of the mankind is a Herculean task. The process of solving the problem started in the 1833 when Charles Babbage invented the “analytical engine”, the first step towards designing a computer. In the beginning, computers were mathematical curiosities, consisting of a complex mass of gears, levers & cogs. During World War II, mechanical computers were replaced by vacuum tubes but they were also monstrous in size. The turning point came in 1948 after discovery of the transistor. A decade after that, the laser was discovered, which is essential to the Internet & the information high way. Today, tens of millions of transistors can be crammed into an area the size of a fingernail. So after several evolutions the modern microprocessor- based powerful computers were developed at the end of the 20th century. Steps in Technology A promise – Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computer will manipulate intelligence according to wishes. . Computer based on very large scale integration. Discovery of Laser is essential to the Internet and the information high way. Computer based on Microelectronics Computer designed with the use of integrated circuits (IC) Transistor based computer Turning point came after discovery of transistors at Bell Laboratories at 1948 Mechanical computer was replaced by monstrous size computer consisting of VACUUM TUBES 2 nd Generation 1955 - 1964 1st Generation 1942 - 1954 5th Generation 4TH Generation 1976 - 98 3rd Generation 1965 - 1975 Micro Mini Mainfr ame Super In fact today’s computers along with modern communication system are so efficient and produce such effective knowledge/information in every sphere of society enabling us to improve the status of our society as well as our day-to-day lifestyle, we can firmly say that we have entered a new era called information era. Already the information revolution is creating links on a scale unparallel in human history, creating a common planetary culture out of thousands of small ones. This information era is mostly based on three important revolutions – computer revolution, bimolecular revolution and quantum revolution. Last one is the most fundamental Quantum Revolution Transistor, Laser Computer Revolution X-ray crystallography theory of chemical bonding Bimolecular Revolution The blending of these three revolutions will accelerate and enrich the development of science. This acceleration of science and technology into next century will necessarily have vast repercussions on the wealth of nation and our standard of living. Thurow, former dean of MIT’s Sloan School of Management, writes, “Today, knowledge and skill now stand alone as the only source of comparative advantage.” Computers have entered into every segment of society. Until the mid -1980s, few people had direct contact with computers. Then people began to purchase PCs and in the 1990s, the Internet and the World Wide Web came to effect nearly every body. People increasingly felt the need to “be connected“ or “plugged in” to information sources or to each other. The Corporate world are putting massive amount of information into the World Wide Web, and people using web browsers can access information that was never available before. Modern computers have a myriad of applications in fields ranging from the arts to the sciences, and from personal finance to enhanced communications. The use of supercomputers has been well established in research and government. LANs link the computers in separate departments of business or universities and large net works, such as the Internet, permit modems (telecommunication devices that transmit data through telephone lines) – to link individual computers to other computers anywhere in the world. Journalists and writers now use word processors to write books and articles. CAD programmes enable engineers to design three-dimensional models on a computer screen. CAM, programmes help people plan complex production schedules and control robots in the factory. Dedicated computers are routinely used in thousands of products ranging from calculators to airplanes. In education, CAI uses computerized lessons that range from simple drills and practice session to complex interactive tutorials. This steady exponential explosion in computer power in turn, will spawn entire industries that have no counterpart in today’s market. Multimedia has opened up a wonderland in the field of media. Now due to computer money is already going digital which “is money incarnated, finally, as pure information“. Germany has begun to issue smart card that carries basic health information to all its citizens. Smart cars have already been built which can monitor ones driving and the driving conditions nearby. In near future, not surprisingly, with the advent of artificial intelligence the motto is: In the past, shoes could stink, In the present, shoes can blink, In the future, shoes will think. Knowledge about computers is very often a requirement for getting a job. Computer-related jobs are among the most growing employment segment. As more small, medium sized businesses become computerized, they will require more people to operate the system. Companies need independent computer consultants, programmers, computer security specialists, Web specialists, academic consultants, graphic artists etc. The industries encourage young people still in school to get a well-rounded education. To cope up with modern society computer is gradually infusing into all parts of our life. Patriot prophet Swami Vivekananda, from his absolute realization put forward that balance implementation of the trio – science, technology and religion would bring forth developed India. He said, “What we need is to study independent of foreign control, different branches of the knowledge that is our own and with it the English language and the Western Science; we need technical education and all else, that will develop industries, so that men instead of seeking for services may earn to provide for themselves and to save against a rainy day.” So every one must be literate in computer science. Computer, with all the unthinkable benefits they offer, also unfortunately can enable computer crime. Software piracy, Viruses, Information theft etc. are common crime of computer. But computer cannot be blamed for these crimes. Obviously, a question arises – can science prevent man from doing this evil act? Einstein declared, ”Science can denature Plutonium, but Science cannot denature evil in the heart of man.” So people should be trained to be ethically strong to exclude the evil effect and education has to go beyond words to meaning, information/knowledge to wisdom. One should keep in mind only “ the confluence of the two energy streams modern science and science of spirituality – in the coming decades alone holds the promise of our amazing modern scientific civilization progressing steadily in the direction of universal peace, well being & fulfillment- individual & collective. We care for it, we water it, then it sprouts; very soon we see a little plant and hopefulness comes. We are able to care for it more because we see a sign of life. Same is it with our life.
