Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery
Life in your hands: solastalgia, resilience and the value of contemporary art,
craft and design
Development Funding: $51,700
To be developed by guest curator Robyn Daw this exhibition, to be undertaken in
partnership with Object - Australian Centre for Craft and Design, will showcase the
work of ten contemporary artists and craft/design practitioners that will address the
impact of environmental stresses on select regional centres. The central concept of
the exhibition is a belief that contemporary art, craft and design is a vehicle for
change. Participating communities will be consulted and will work directly with the
artists to give them a voice and avenue for personal action.
Museum of Contemporary Art
Almanac: The Gift of Ann Lewis AO
Touring Funding: $127,005
This touring exhibition draws upon works donated by collector and philanthropist Dr
Ann Lewis AO to three public museums—the Museum of Contemporary Art,
Newcastle Region Art Gallery, and the Moree Regional Gallery. Mapping changes in
ideas, styles, tastes and influences over the last 50 years the exhibition comprises
painting, photography, sculpture and printmaking by some of Australia's leading
contemporary and Indigenous artists including Sally Gabori, Rosemary Laing,
Dorothy Napangardi, Ralph Balson, Ricky Swallow, Anne Zahalka, Gloria Petyarre
and Rosalie Gascoigne.
The exhibition will tour to eight venues throughout the Australian Capital Territory,
New South Wales and Victoria.
Grafton Regional Gallery
Fire & Fruition: Geoff Crispin - a regional practice in clay
Touring Funding: $27,300
Fire & Fruition explores the 35 year career of the New South Wales based ceramicist
Geoff Crispin and his involvement, exchange and impact on ceramic practice in
Indigenous communities in the Tiwi Islands, Ernabella, Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia
and other international communities. Crispin’s pottery combines the local materials
from northern New South Wales with the traditional forms and techniques of early
Chinese pottery to express a unique synthesis of material, form and tradition. The
exhibition will feature 52 artworks including the artist’s wood fired stoneware and
porcelain and works from artists in communities where Crispin has taught and
worked.
The exhibition will tour to six venues throughout the Australian Capital Territory, New
South Wales and Queensland.
Bathurst Regional Art Gallery
MAYS: The May's Lane Street Art Project
Touring Funding: $74,375
MAY’S is the first comprehensive exhibition of Australian street art to tour nationally
and will survey street artworks created at May Lane in St Peters, Sydney, between
2005-2010 by 25 celebrated Australian and international street artists. The exhibition
seeks to ask questions about high art and street art and explores issues that arise
from this juncture. The exhibition targets a youth demographic and there will be a
strong focus on education and public programs particularly for youth audiences.
The exhibition will tour to six venues throughout the Australian Capital Territory, New
South Wales, South Australia and Queensland.
Object - Australian Centre for Craft and Design
Robert Baines: Metal
Touring Funding: $57,555
This exhibition is the sixth in the Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft
exhibition series showcasing the career of the gold and silversmith, Robert Baines.
Baines is an internationally respected artist, researcher, academic and author who
creates jewellery and larger, wire works which combine precious metals with plastic
components and powdercoating. His work encompasses references to the
archaeological artefact through to iconic interpretations of everyday items. The
exhibition will be accompanied by a major monograph publication.
The exhibition will tour to ten venues throughout the Australian Capital Territory, New
South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and Queensland.
Tweed River Regional Art Gallery
Surface Tension: the art of Euan Macleod 1991 - 2009
Touring Funding: $97,610
Curated by Gavin Wilson Surface Tension is the first major exhibition of the work of
the painter Euan Macleod. The exhibition will include 47 works that explore the
artist’s interpretation of the figure in Australian and New Zealand landscapes. The
works range from the damaged back blocks of New South Wales Central West,
through the prescribed suburban interiors of memory and muted waterways and
headlands of New Zealand’s South Island, back across the Tasman to the soaring
massif of the MacDonnell Ranges near Alice Springs and the splendour of
Antarctica.
The exhibition will tour to five venues throughout New South Wales, Victoria and
Queensland.
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Smalltown
Touring Funding: $97,100
Smalltown is a dialogue between photographer Martin Mischkulnig and seminal
Australian author Tim Winton travelling through remote areas of Australia and
chronicling the marginal and disenfranchised small town environments rarely
encountered by most Australians. The exhibition comprising 50 photographs made
using a rare 8 x 10 inch large format camera offers audiences an immersion into the
physical and social isolation of small town life. A film featuring Tim Winton
accompanies the exhibition with the author reading extracts from his publication
Smalltown.
The exhibition will tour to 13 venues throughout New South Wales, Queensland,
Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.
Victoria
Gippsland Art Gallery
Dreamweavers
Development Funding: $23,550
Dreamweavers aims to explore the relationship between art and the subconscious
through the work of four Australian and two international 'neo-surrealist' artists
including the iconic work of James Gleeson which will provide a historical context for
the contemporary works. The exhibition surveys contemporary surrealist trends
through a range of multidisciplinary practices in a presentation that will be highly
theatrical and designed to be accessible for audiences of all ages. A catalogue and
extensive education and public programs will augment the exhibition.
The Arts Centre
AC/DC: Australia’s Family Jewels
Touring Funding: $93,684
AC/DC Australia’s Family Jewels celebrates the history, musical performance and
creativity of the Australian international rock band AC/DC. The exhibition, to be
undertaken in partnership with the Western Australian Museum, interprets the
material culture and performance history of the band and links it to the experience of
their music. It includes costumes, original instruments, letters, notebooks and lyrics,
performance ephemera, original stage props, photographs and moving image
material both screen based and projected such as music videos, live footage and
concert posters.
The exhibition will tour to 3 venues throughout Western Australia, Northern Territory
and New South Wales.
NETS Victoria
The Spirit of the Land
Touring Funding: $92,875
The landscape genre has dominated Australian art and has been fundamental in the
formation of an Australian national identity. Curated by Robert Lindsay this exhibition
will explore the often metaphysical relationship to the land through the work, from
over the last 50 years, of eleven leading Indigenous and non Indigenous Australian
artists including Sidney Nolan, Dorothy Napangardi, Rover Thomas, John Olsen,
Fred Williams, Emily Kame Kngwarreye and Rosalie Gascoigne. The exhibition will
also be presented in the context of climate change and its impact on the
environment.
The exhibition will tour to eight venues throughout New South Wales, Victoria,
Northern Territory and South Australia.
Experimenta Media Arts Inc
Experimenta Utopia Now
Touring Funding: $42,490
Experimenta Utopia Now is a new media art exhibition featuring interactive and
screen based artworks that allows visitors to engage with, act out, inhabit and
experience utopian and dystopian visions and environments. The exhibition critiques
the scope for happiness, pokes fun at social and physical boundaries, and questions
the human race’s ability to preserve itself. Artists in the exhibition include Kit Wise,
Marco Bresciani, Melissa Ramos, Isobel Knowles, Van Sowerwine and Dorata
Mytych. The exhibition is designed to allow a general audience to engage with the
works and easily understand them.
The exhibition will tour to four venues throughout New South Wales, Victoria and
Tasmania.

Art on the Move
The Syndicate
Touring Funding: $85,857
The Syndicate exhibition is an installation of ten life size figures by Western
Australian sculptor, Simon Gilby. The sculptures are fabricated from a range of
materials, often small, patchworked pieces of thin steel plate and ribbons of flat bar
that have been scrolled and brazed into filigree. The Syndicate reflects humanity's
biological, technological and environmental contexts as well as hinting at the
knowledge, beliefs, questions and anxieties carried within.
The exhibition will tour to five venues throughout Western Australia, Victoria,
Queensland and New South Wales.

Tour de force: In case of emergency break glass
Touring Funding: $84,040
This exhibition features nationally and internationally respected Australian glass
artists Timothy Horn, Deb Jones, Jacqueline Gropp, Nicholas Folland, Neil Roberts,
Tom Moore, Ian Mowbray and Patricia Roan. The curatorial rationale of Tour de
force focuses on creating an experience designed to inspire thought and fuel
discussion about glass as a cultural medium. It challenges the traditional ideas,
methods and materials of glass making and tackles broader issues of the human
condition with the aim of inciting greater community thought and debate.
The exhibition will tour to nine venues throughout New South Wales, South Australia,
Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Western Australia.

National Gallery of Australia
Face: Australian Portraits 1880 - 1960
Touring Funding: $114,313
The first major National Gallery of Australia travelling exhibition to survey portraiture
from the national collection Face: Australian Portraits 1880 – 1960 is a timely survey
of the genre and the exhibition will provide a compelling image of Australians over
the course of time. Portraits were among the first paintings purchased for the
national collection and portraiture has played an important part in the history of
Australian art. The exhibition will showcase portraits by some of Australia's most
renowned artists including Tom Roberts, George Lambert, Rupert Bunny, Margaret
Preston, Nora Heysen, Albert Tucker, Sidney Nolan, and John Brack.
The exhibition will tour to six venues in Queensland, Northern Territory, Victoria,
Tasmania and New South Wales.
Australian War Memorial
Sidney Nolan: the Gallipoli Series
Touring Funding: $88,551
Sidney Nolan: the Gallipoli Seriesshowcases 80 drawings and paintings selected
from the 252 works Nolan presented to the Australian War Memorial in 1978 in
memory of the death of his brother Raymond, an enlisted soldier, just before the end
of the Second World War. For more at least two decades Nolan was preoccupied
with depicting the heroic deeds of Australian soldiers at Gallipoli. The works are both
a personal and public memory of Gallipoli events and the series interprets the
experience of 60,000 Australian soldiers who endured this campaign.
The exhibition will tour to six venues in Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, Western
Australia and South Australia.
Australian War Memorial
A is for Animals
Touring Funding: $39,920
A is for Animals, a family-focused exhibition, uses the alphabet as a structure to
investigate a range of themes relating to animals caught up in times of war. It
explores stories of the Light Horse; the donkeys, camels, horses and other creatures
used to transport soldiers and equipment; the pigeons and dogs used to carry
messages; the dogs who have located injured soldiers and tracked the enemy; and
animals adopted as mascots and pets. The exhibition also considers the unwelcome
animals in war, such as insects, rats and jungle dwellers, which can make life difficult
or dangerous.
The exhibition will tour to four venues in New South Wales and Queensland.
