Wall Scrawl review

On several levels, the 3rdRail Studio’s end of season show “Wall Scrawl: A 360 Degree
Exploration of Street Art” is a visual treat. “The theme”, explains gallery owner Chrissy Milo,
“speaks directly to the impact that street art has over the current art scene.” Indeed, the show
contains a full range of disciplines – tags, collage, photography, painting and sculpture- that all
intersect with that common lineage.
Saturday night’s gala opening of the month-long show began on the street where artist
Christopher Pierro of Acept Studios worked on his wall-sized mural throughout the evening
event to create a spectacular gallery entrance. Also on the outside walls are hauntingly beautiful
collages by Noemie Bonnet. Street muralist Muck, who attended the opening, painted the far
interior wall of the exhibition space with a florid “Wall Scrawl” tag that formed the perfect
launching point for Charlene Weisler’s street photography. Weisler creates her own urban
montage mis en scenes from actual graffiti, stencil and wheat paste. Rudolf Gyselings’ bold,
energetic canvases speak to the passion and freedom of street art and sculptor Matt E. Johnson
incorporates street elements such as discarded metal brake linings to form his sculpture bases.
All strong, all with a common genus, 3rd Rail Studio has created a unique and impactful art show
that stretches the boundaries of an iconoclastic art form.
