
structure and function are
related to the performance
of physical activity.
Achievement with
Excellence
Explain how/why body

structure and function are
related to the performance
of physical activity.
Explain in detail how/why
body structure and
function are related to the
performance of physical
activity.
Explanatory Notes
1
This achievement standard is derived from Health and Physical Education in the New
Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 1999, and relates to
Level 6 Achievement Objectives A2 and B3.
2

At Level 1, it is expected that teachers will offer a choice of suitable large muscle
locomotor-type physical activities to which the knowledge of body structure and
function can be applied, eg:

game and sport activities involving running, jumping, throwing, catching, striking

aquatic activities – swimming, snorkelling, diving, water polo

outdoor activities – rock climbing, kayaking, tramping

dance, aerobics, poi, haka, gymnastics, weight training.
4
Body structure and function involves how the human body works in relation to
physical activity. At Level 1, this should include, but is not limited to:

basic functional anatomy

basic principles of biomechanics

basic physiological responses to large muscle locomotor-type activities.
5
How/why has been used in the assessment criteria for achievement with merit and
achievement with excellence because it will be appropriate to explain how in some
situations and why in others, while, in some situations, both how and why will need to
be considered.
6
Describe in this achievement standard may include the identification of relevant
features involved in the performance of physical activity.
7
Achievement with merit and achievement with excellence will require knowledge of
factors such as:

the relationship between anatomical structure and the performance of a
physical activity

the use of biomechanical principles to improve performance of a physical
activity

the relationship of physiological responses to the intensity of a physical activity.
8
For achievement with excellence, explain in detail could include:

a more in-depth explanation of the factors in Explanatory Note 7

how the factors listed in Explanatory Note 7 interact to improve performance of
a physical activity.
