See, Say, Trace, Cover, Write, and Check
(The Fernald Method)
Here is something that we do in class to help us with our spelling words.
1. See the word with our eyes.
2. Say the word with our mouth.
3. Trace the word on your desk with the two fingers that you write with.
4. Cover the word with your hand, so you can’t see it.
5. Write the word with a pencil.
6. Check to see if your word is spelled correctly.
7. Repeat two additional times. You should have done this three times.
