favorite poetry (third grade)
Below is a compilation of the responses I received regarding favorite
poetry selections for third grade.

Douglas Florian - any of his animal poems
Charles R. Smith's "Hoop Queens" "Rim Shots" and "Short Takes" all
about basketball
Jack Prelutsky (a special favorite is If Not For the Cat, a book of
haiku)
Ted Scheu (shy) the Poetry Guy (His poems are about kids schoo lives
and are illustrated with photos of kids reacting to his poetry.)
Florian's Mammalabilia, Insectlopedia, etc
At least one book by Joyce Sidman. Butterfly Eyes, Song of the Water
Boatman and Meow Ruff are my favorites.

Joe Cepeda. A collection of poems about seven kids sharing the power of
poetry as they move through their neighborhood.
Shoe magic / by Nikki Grimes ; illustrated by Terry Widener. Poems
describe the different shoes children wear, including sandals, running
shoes, golf shoes, and workboots.
Good dog : poems / by Maya Gottfried ; paintings by Robert Rahway
Zakanitch. In this heart-stealing picture book, fine artist Robert
Rahway Zakanitch gives us 16 masterful, soulful, impossibly
expressive portraits of dogs, and Maya Gottfried wonderfully captures
their voices and inner personalities in 16 enchanting poems. It's a
doggie delight! These dogs beg to be patted, tickled, scratched, and
ruffled. Which one will be your best friend?

the well-known poem.

Thanks a million / by Nikki Grimes ; pictures by Cozbi A. Cabrera. The
simple act of saying "thank you" can change relationships and
attitudes. This lovely collection of sixteen poems that describe
thankfulness and expressing thanks is a wonderful way to share the
importance and power of these two words with children. The opening
poem "Reward" is worth the price of admissionsimple but very moving.

because they're all about monsters, and some of them are also about
