DIVISION AND DEPARTMENT Health Sciences SEMESTER HOURS CREDIT/CONTACT HOURS Three hours CATALOG DESCRIPTION This course is an application to the language of medicine. Emphasis is placed on terminology associated with health care, spelling, pronunciation, and meanings associated with prefixes, suffixes, and roots as they relate to anatomical body systems. Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to correctly abbreviate medical terms and appropriately use medical terminology in verbal and written communication. TEXTBOOK(S) Chabner: The Language of Medicine, 7th Edition\Access Code . TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS A. General requirements A personal computer (not WebTV) with Windows 2000 or Windows XP (computer labs are available on all three campuses) A VGA (or equivalent) or better monitor Reliable Internet access. (If using a dial-up connection, at least 28.8k modem is recommended. Slower dial-up connections will affect course performance. If you are an AOL user: You will need AOL version 7.0 or higher) Netscape Navigator/Communicator 7.1 higher or Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher Word processing program such as Microsoft Word 97 or above (Microsoft Works is not compatible) A printer connected to the computer A CD-ROM drive Sound Card Most recent versions of plug-ins and viewers. These are free additions to browsers that allow students to view special course components such as video, clips, or animations. B. Use correct pronunciation and spelling skills covering general medical terms, body structure, and the body systems. 2. Identify and define the various word parts of medical terminology. 3. Recognize and define symbols and abbreviations relating to medical terminology. 4. Identify and define terminology pertaining to the body and its systems including but not limited to the following: a. Basic word structure b. Terms pertaining to the body as a whole c. Sufffixes d. Prefixes e. Digestive system f. Additional Suffixes and digestive system disorders g. Urinary system h. Female reproductive System i. Male reproductive system j. Nervous system k. Cardiovasculer system l. Respiratory system m. Blood system n. Lympathetic and immune system o. Muscoskeletal system p. Skin Q. Sense Organs: The wyw and ear r. Endocrine system s. Cancer medicine t. Radiology and nuclear medicine u. Pharmacology v. Psychiatric TEACHING METHODS A variety of teaching methods and student involvement exercises will be utilized to address different learning styles. ATTENDANCE POLICY ALL STUDENTS MUST BE PRESENT FOR THE FINAL EXAM TO BE GIVEN AT THE SAME TIME. In a Web class students are still expected to accept responsibility for covering the assigned material and completing assignments on time. The student is responsible for keeping pace with the assignment calendar. This requires a mature attitude and selfdiscipline. Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should withdraw from that class before poor attendance interferes with the student’s ability to achieve the objective required in the course. Tracking of student activity and performance will be conducted approximately every two weeks. There are quizzes to be taken before each exam, which will be included in your final grade. You may take each quiz twice. The higher grade counts.
