Course Description I get college credit for this course? Medical Terminology is a WCTC course taught at Eisenhower. The class is classified as a “Transcripted Credit” course. This means that each student who enrolls in and passes the course will have a college transcript at WCTC. Course Purpose This course is intended to deepen your understanding of medicine through establishing a firm foundation in vocabulary. In focusing on specific learning strategies, we will firmly and efficiently learn over 1,000 medical terms. Student Commitment This class requires focus, drive, and dedication. Vocabulary can seem dry and the sheer amount of vocabulary terms can become overwhelming if you delay studying. Memorization is essential to doing well in this course. Finally, this course also requires maturity. We are dealing with medical terminology. The terms we will be learning are all pertinent, medical content and need to be regarded and respected as such. Mr. Burgardt’s Goal Ultimately, my goal for you is to leave this class having a deep understanding of the system of medical terminology. You must motivate yourself to complete the work well, study and learn the material, and engage in class. At the end of this course, each of you will have deepened your understanding of medical vocabulary, acquired new valuable skills, and learned how to motivate yourself to learn and achieve. Instructor Expectations As high school students, you are all excited to finally be treated like adults. In order to be treated like adults, you need to act like adults. How do adults behave? Adults are … 1. Prepared for their day – i.e bring your supplies to class 2. On time for their commitments - i.e be in your seat before the final bell 3. Engaged in their environment and activities, and above all adults are … 4. Respectful of each other, other’s property, and themselves. The Bottom Line: Behave like an adult and you will be treated like one, and visa versa. If you miss the review day before the test, you are still expected to take the test as scheduled. Turning work in on time is a habit and skill you will need to use for the rest of your life. What a good time to reinforce that habit now. *You may not turn in late work after the unit test for that unit has passed. *If you miss a quiz or a test it is your responsibility to come in and make arrangements with me to make up the assessment. Attendance Consistent attendance is essential if you are going to succeed in this class. Without being in class you miss valuable instruction and/or experiences that help to develop holistic, and deep understanding of the course material. Attendance will be taken at the start of every class. If you are not present when attendance is taken, you must have a pass or you will be marked tardy. If you are tardy for than once, there will be consequences. If you are more than 10 minutes late without a pass, you are truant. (See page 26 of the Student Handbook) Excused Absences: If you are excused, it is your responsibility to come and make up the work that you missed. Unexcused Absences: When an absence is unexcused, you will not be allowed to make up the work that you missed. Homework and Assessments Homework: Homework completion is required. Homework will be entered under the “Learning Opportunities” category in Infinite Campus. The assignments in this category will be recorded in a graded format to track participation and homework completion. If homework is not completed or not done proficiently the following may occur: You will be asked to stay after school for 9th hour to complete it. At the time of the Unit Test, you will not be allowed to retake that unit’s test. You will be at risk for missing your co-curricular activities (i.e sports, clubs, etc.) Moral of the story: Do your homework. You’ll do better in class, will avoid all of the above, and ultimately learn. Assessment: Assessments will be graded and included in the students semester grade. The purpose of assessments is to gauge your learning and help us understand if we need to review any of the content. Tests, quizzes, labs, and projects are all examples of assessment that will be graded. Test Retakes WCTC mandates no re-takes on Medical Terminology exams. Academic Honesty Policy New Berlin students’ responsibilities are to learn ad achieve to the best of their abilities. In order to meet the needs of each student and assess progress, teachers expect that assignments and tests represent a true picture of that student’s own performance.
