INTERNET JARGON AND ROLE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE The knowledge of English language is an important factor when discussing Internet penetration. It is the universal language on the Internet. The question is whether a poor English knowledge stands as a certain barrier to a more intensive use of the Internet. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the recognition of Internet terminology by the students of Faculty of Education. The students are from English Teaching department (ELT), Computer Education and Instructional Technologies (CEIT) department , Primary School Mathematics Teaching (PSMT) department and Primary School History Teaching (PSHT) department. A questionaire is given to 126 students. It comprised 20 terms, each item has the meaning of normal usage in English and also the meaning that is used in the Internet as in Internet jargon the terms may have a markedly different meaning from that which is typically understood . Moreover the students are asked to mark the level of their English knowledge.For this purpose, the study aims at investigating the student recognition of the terms in the world of Internet according to their knowledge of English. The main question is whether English knowledge plays a role in students’ recognition of the Internet terminology. The results Show that Elt students‘ frequency because of their proficiency of language had a meaningfull difference 9 out of 20 terms. On the other hand, CEIT students because of their subject matter were the leader of the study (11 out of 20) Students of the other 2 departments were beyond them as their English knowledge level was not satisfactory as they marked. This shows that students should be acquinted also with the internet terminology via English language learning. Apart from the entertainment purposes and personal commınication they can achieve the internet penetration with the help of English and will be acquinted with the Internet terminology effectively during their future works.
