Lula Adams
Lula Belle Adams, 92, of Eminence, died Sunday, July 8, 2007 at Jewish Hospital, Louisville.
Daughter of the late Joe Frank and Susie Adams LaFollette, she was a native of Shelbyville and a
homemaker. She was a member of the Calvary Temple Pentecostal Church, New Castle.
She is survived by one sister, Thelma Pollini, Pekin, IL and several nieces and nephews. She
was preceded in death by her husband: Elmer E. Adams; infant daughter, Dorothy Adams; two
sisters: Cora Neese and Florence Rucker and two brothers: Albert and Jr. LaFollette.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, July 11th) at Prewitt New Castle
Funeral Home. Pastor Doris Harris, Calvary Temple Pentecostal Church, will officiate.
Interment will be in the Eminence Cemetery.

Kenneth Adler
Kenneth A. Adler, 85, of eminence, died Sunday, September 30, 2007. Son of the late Blaine
and Gladys Mae Kelley Adler, he was a member of the Henry Christian Church. He was retired
as a truck driver from the Department of Transportation after 30 years of service and was an
Army veteran of WWII.
He is survived by four sons: Kenneth (Jane) Brewer, Mocksville, NC, David (Dori) Adler,
Richmond, VA, Randell (Annette) Adler, Gastonia, NC and Robert Adler, Frankfort; one sister:
Norma Jean Smith, Eminence; special friend: Minnie Craig, Eminence; three grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Humston Adler and two
sisters: Mary Agnes Reid and Louise Bond and two brothers: Richard and Robert Adler.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, October 3rd) at the Henry Christian
Church, officiated by Bro. Ed Berry, Pastor. Rev. Michael Duncan, pastor of the Eminence
Baptist Church and Rev. Nick Coleman of Sulphur will assist. Interment will be in the Port
Royal Cemetery. Prewitt Eminence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

J. C. Aldridge, 86, died Saturday, November 24, 2007.

Louise Aldridge
Mrs. Louise Grether Aldridge, 76, of Pleasureville, died at the home of her nephew, Howard
Willhite, Shelby County, Thursday, September 16, 1943, of a heart attack. She was a member of
the Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services were conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home in Pleasureville, Saturday,
September 18th, with Rev. E. N. Chandler officiating. Burial was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Monterey Parks, Campbellsburg, Mrs. Anna Soch, Los
Angeles, CA and Mrs. Hattie Aldridge, Lexington; two sons: Charlie Barnsfather and James
Barnsfather, both of Pleasureville; three sisters: Mrs. J. H. Wilson, Mrs. Harry Kohlmeyer and
Mrs. Cora Morlock and a brother, Charles Grether, all of Cincinnati; thirty-one grandchildren
and eleven great-grandchildren.

Effie Allison
Mrs. Effie Watkins Allison, 57, (1885-1943) died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.
E. Bruce, and Mr. Bruce, in Cropper, at 10:30 p.m., Thursday.
She is survived by her husband, Virgil Allison; one daughter: Mrs. E. J. Bruce; one sister: Mrs.
T. J. Duncan, Campbellsburg; one brother: Arthur Watkins, Pleasureville and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church in Cropper, at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, with
Rev. Tucker Calloway officiating, assisted by Rev. M. W. Bottom. Burial was in the
Pleasureville Cemetery.

Gayle Arnold, Sr.
Gayle C. Arnold, Sr., 81, of Turners Station, died Wednesday, November 7, 2007. Son of the
late Newton Cyrus and Nannie Stone Arnold, he was a farmer and WWII Army Veteran. He
was also a member of the Drennon Christian Church.
He is survived by two sons: Gayle C. Arnold, Jr., and wife, Patricia, Frankfort and Robert T.
Arnold and wife Brenda, Port Royal and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Jean Elizabeth Wade Arnold.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 11th at Prewitt New Castle Funeral
Home. Rev. Shawn Golden, pastor of the Drennon Christian Church, officiated. Interment was
in the Smithfield Cemetery.

Dr. W. F. Asbury
Dr. W. F. Asbury, 75, practicing physician in the Campbellsburg and Turners Station
communities for forty years, died at his home in Campbellsburg, Saturday.
Funeral services were conducted at his home at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, with burial at Forrest
Retreat, the country home of Dr. Eslie Asbury near Paris, KY.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Ada Gaunce Asbury, he is survived by two sons, Dr. Eslie Asbury,
Cincinnati and A.A. Asbury, Wilson, NC.

Edna Smith Baker
Mrs. Edna Smith Baker, 69 (1875-1944), died Tuesday morning at 10:30, at her residence, 1337
Olive, Louisville.
She is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Peter Hower and Mrs. Carrie Bergen of Cropper and Mrs.
H. W. Hudson, Pleasureville and a brother, George W. Smith.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, with burial in the
Pleasureville Cemetery.

Hallie Hall Baker
Mrs. Hallie Hall Baker, 73, formerly of Pleasureville, died at the home of her son, Roy Baker
and Mrs. Baker, in Shelbyville, at 2:00 p.m., Thursday.
She is survived by two other sons: Jerry Baker, Charlestown, IN and Willie Baker, U.S. Army,
stationed in Alabama; two daughters: Mrs. William Smither, Eastwood and Mrs. J. C. Ragan,
Scott’s Station; three sisters: Mrs. Earl Gill and Mrs. Buddie Hughes, both of Pleasureville, and
Mrs. L. W. Moore, Shelbyville, and a brother: Ben Hall, of Pleasureville.
Burial was in the Pleasureville Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., Thursday.

Julia Katherine Banta
Mrs. Julia Katherine Banta, 66, died Thursday, April 8, 1943, at her home near Blackwell. She
was born in the Franklinton community and became a member of the Franklinton Baptist Church
at the age of 12 years.
Later in life she moved to the Blackwell community and became a faithful attendant of the
Union Baptist Church, where she later moved her letter. She taught in the public schools of
Henry County for many years. She was married to George L. Banta in 1899. Four children from
this union survive: Mrs. Jessie Willhoite, Eminence, Mrs. Nellie Tingle, Pleasureville, Mrs.
Golda Miller and Mr. Eugene Banta of Blackwell. She is also survived by a sister: Mrs. Nettie
Willhoite, Blackwell; two brothers: Garfield Sutherland, Shelby County and Charles Sutherland,
Blackwell. Nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Funeral services were conducted at the Union Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m., Friday, with Rev.
Neil Deblock, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the cemetery by the church.

Annie M. Barton
Mrs. Annie MaGruder Barton, 75, (1868-1943) died at her home in North Pleasureville at 11:00
p.m. Thursday, March 23, 1943. She was the widow of the late Leonard Barton.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, with Rev. E. P. Schaich
officiating. Burial was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.
She is survived by one sister: Mrs. J. M. Holland, Pleasureville, and two nieces: Mrs. Jed King,
Pleasureville and Mrs. Horace Cleveland, Franklinton.

Jane Roberts Batterton
Jane Roberts Batterton, 69, of Shelbyville, formerly of Eminence, died Wednesday, November
14, 2007, at Baptist Hospital Northeast in LaGrange. She was the daughter of the late Wilson
and Sarah Belle Mitchell Staten, a member of the Eminence Methodist Church and a secretary
for the Shelby County School system.
She is survived by her daughter: Debbie LeCompte, Shelbyville; one son: Brad Roberts,
Eminence; three sisters: Brenda McCoun, Martha Ann Powell and Denise King, all of
Shelbyville; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by
her husbands, Wilburn Roberts and Hillis Batterton.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 16th at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville. Rev.
Jack Brewer, First United Methodist Church, Frankfort, officiated. Interment was in the
Eminence Cemetery.

John W. Batts
John W. Batts, 84 (1860-1943), died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Will Hitt, Washington, D.
C., on Saturday, January 30, 1943. The body was held in Washington until this week due to the
illness of Mrs. Hitt. He was a native Henry Countian, having been with his daughter the past two
years.
Funeral services were conducted in Washington on Monday, following his death, and final
services were held at Ricketts Funeral Home in Eminence, Wednesday, at 3:00 p.m./, with W.
W. Marvin officiating. Burial was in the Eminence Cemetery.
Besides his daughter, he is survived by a sister: Mrs. Maggie Dixon, Louisville; a brother: Henry
Batts, Eminence, three grandchildren and four great-grand children.

Raymond Batts
Raymond Batts, 44, (1899-1943) died at his home in Eminence, at 1:30 p.m., Friday.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, with burial in the
Eminence Cemetery. Rev. F. D. Swanson, pastor of the Eminence Methodist Church, had charge
of the services.
He is survived by his mother: Mrs. Jo Ann Batts; one son: James Batts, stationed with the U.S.
Marines in San Diego, CA; and one brother: Carlisle Batts, Eminence.

Alice Tate Beard
Mrs. Alice Tate Beard, 84, died Thursday afternoon at 3:10, at her home in Campbellsburg.
Death was attributed to infirmities. She was a member of the Campbellsburg Christian Church.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:30, Sunday afternoon, at the Cove Hill Baptist Church,
with Rev. Corbin Adcock officiating, assisted by Rev. Ralph M. Clark, her pastor. Burial was in
the Cove Hill Cemetery.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Laura Page, Nashville, TN and two nieces: Mrs. George Marlin,
Nashville, TN and Mrs. A. R. Brake, Bristol, TN.

Jeff B. Beckley
Jeff B. Beckley, 76, died suddenly at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday of a heart attack while gathering his
corn on the farm of his son in Pleasureville. He was driving a team and fell from the wagon
when he suffered the attack. He did not regain consciousness.
He is survived by his wife: Mrs. Emma Wentworth Beckley; two daughters: Mrs. Sam Perry,
Pleasureville and Mrs. Victor Douthitt, Defoe; four sons: Bunk Beckley, Elmburg, Forest
Beckley, Louisville, and Bob and Jim Beckley, both of Pleasureville.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, at the Defoe Church, with Rev.
Cornelius DeBlock officiating. Burial was in the Defoe Cemetery.

Alene Bennett
Alene Bennett, 94, of Jericho, died Saturday, November 10, 2007, at Homestead Nursing Center,
New Castle. Daughter of the late Ida Kelley and Oscar Cox, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by one daughter: Helen Prewitt, Eminence; two sons: Gene Bennett and wife
Frances Ann, and Ralph Bennett, all of New Castle; two brothers: Herman Cox, Bagdad, and
Roscoe Cox, Louisville; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Eddie Mack Bennett and one son Harold Bennett.
Funeral services were held at noon on Tuesday, November 13th, at Prewitt New Castle Funeral
Home. Rev. Gary Polston, New Castle United Methodist Church, officiated. Rev. Libby
McManis, pastor of the Pleasureville Christian Church, assisted. Interment was in the New
Castle Cemetery.

Katherine Bennett
Mrs. Katherine Bennett, 79, wife of Mr. John L. Bennett, died November 29, 1942, at their home
in Gest. Before their marriage, she was Miss Katherine Hopkins. She was born near Port Royal.
They had been married more than sixty-two years.
She is survived by her husband; one son: Mr. Taylor Bennett, Fallanbee, West VA and three
daughters: Mrs. Jennie Lurton, Bethlehem, Mrs. Hadie Crouch, Detroit, MI and Miss Elizabeth
Bennett and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the home, December 2nd, at 10:00 a.m., with burial in the
Monterey Cemetery.

Norman L. Beetem
Norman L. Beetem, Sr., 76, of Carrollton, died Thursday, August 30, 2007, in Smithfield. He
was the son of the late Richard P. and Emma Lebus Taylor Beetem, retired from UPS as a
supervisor in Louisville and former employee of the Kentucky State Reformatory and Kroger in
Carrollton. He also attended the Port Royal Baptist Church and served in the U. S. Army.
He is survived by two daughters: Lisa Jo Connolly, Carrolton and Nona R. Gambrell, Corbin;
one son: Norman L. Beetem, Jr., Bedford; one sisters: Numia Blackwell, Maui, Hawaii; nine
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou
Beetem, one sister, Virginia Smith and one brother, Clyde T. Beetem.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 4th at Tandy Eckler-Riley Funeral
Home, Carrollton. Crematory services were provided. Interment of the remains was in the Port
Royal Cemetery.

Nannie Cutting Bell
Nannie Cutting Bell, 67 (1875-1943), died at the hospital in Louisville, January 18, 1943, of
injuries received when struck by a street car.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Bryant in Campbellsburg, January
20th, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. J. E. Wright, assisted by Rev. Jack Akin and Rev. H. M.
Wiley. Burial was in the Campbellsburg Cemetery.
Mrs. Bell made her home with a cousin, Mrs. D. E. Stivers and Mr. Stivers, in Louisville, but
spent her summers in Campbellsburg with her cousins. She is survived by several her own
cousins, Bryants.

Genevieve Berry
Genevieve Berry, 96, of Louisville, died Friday, September 21, 2007 at Baptist Hospital Hospice
Unit. She was the daughter of the late Claude and Maggie Herrell DeVore.
She is survived by a Cousin, Janet Thomas, Carrollton. She was preceded in death by her
husband: Estell Berry; son: Gene Lynn Berry and brother: Claude Herrell DeVore.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 25th at the Port Royal Cemetery.
Rev. Gary Polston, pastor of the New Castle United Methodist Church, officiated. Interment was
in the Port Royal Cemetery.

Fred Blackmon
Fred Blackmon, 46, of New Castle, died Monday, July 16, 2007, in Carroll County. He was an
iron worker and the son of the late Juanita Mason Blackmon.
He is survived by his wife: Lori Blackmon, New Castle; one daughter: Beth Blackmon, New
Castle; one son: Brandon Blackmon, New Castle; his father: William Fred “Blackie” Blackmon,
Plant City, FL; one sister: Eva Sue Blackmon, El Cajon, CA; and two brothers: Curtis Blackmon
and Kenny Blackmon, both of Plant City, FL>
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 20th at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home. Olen
“Burl” Blackmon officiated. Interment was in the New Castle Cemetery.

Thelma Eldridge Boyd
Thelma Eldridge Boyd, 87, of Barbourville, the widow of Dr. John H. Boyd, passed away
Wednesday evening, November 7, 2007 in the Knox County Hospital.
She was a daughter of the late Elvin and Lovie Cooley Eldridge, born July 6, 1920 at Wises
Landing, KY.
Mrs. Boyd was a homemaker. She was a member of the Sligo Baptist Church and attended the
First United Methodist Church of Barbourville for many years.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Carroll and
Milburn Eldridge and a step-grandchild, Troy Willis.
Survivors include her children: Carol Hackett and husband, John, of Harsens Island, MI and
Alicia Willis and husband, Ken of Jonesville, VA; a sister: Norma Perkinson, LaGrange; a
grandson: James Ewing III; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren
Her funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2007, in the chapel of the Knox
Funeral Home, with Dr. Joel Allen officiating. Interment will be in the Louisville Memorial
Gardens East at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 12, 2007.

Mike Boyer, 45, of Drennon Springs, died Saturday, September 8, 2007, at his residence. He
was a Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement Officer for 21 years and a member of the Drennon
Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife: Maggie Dietz Boyer, Drennon Springs; four daughters: Susan and
Hallie Boyer, Campbellsburg, Heather Satterly and husband, Michael, Drennon Springs and
Amanda Dietz, Carrollton; mother: Ruby Boyer, Campbellsburg; one brother: Dave Boyer,
Marietta, GA and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (September 9, 2007) at Prewitt New Castle Funeral
Home. Rev. Shawn Golden, pastor of the Drennon Christian Church, will officiate. Interment
will be in the Port Royal Cemetery.

Shelia Caldwell Brackett, 60, of Crestwood, died Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at her residence.
She worked as a clerk in retail sales.
She is survived by her husband: Alvin “Jerry” Brackett; son: Kelly Mathis; mother: Opal
Caldwell; sister: Kathy Valsov; two brother: Kent and Duane Caldwell; two grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Stoess Funeral Home in Crestwood.

Ortie E. Bradshaw
Mrs. Ortie E. (Sarah Orem) (June 25, 1910 – January 16, 1943) Bradshaw died at the JohnstonWillis Hospital in Richmond, VA, Saturday, January 16, 1943, after an extended illness.
Following a brief service in Richmond, VA, Sunday afternoon, funeral services were conducted
at the Campbellsburg Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Tuesday, January 19, with Rev. J.
M. Rogers of Fort Thomas, KY, Rev. S. L. Stealey of Louisville and Rev. Jack Akin of
Campbellsburg, officiating. Burial was in the Campbellsburg Cemetery.
Besides her husband, Rev. Ortie E. Bradshaw, Pastor of Pinhurst and Kingsland Baptist
Churches, Richmond, VA, she is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Earle, and one son, Jerry
Orem; two brothers: Joseph and George Orem and one sister: Kathryn Orem, all of
Campbellsburg.
Mrs. Bradshaw graduated from Georgetown College, class of 1933, receiving the artist’s
diploma in music pianoforte. She taught piano and voice two and one-half years at
Campbellsbville College, before her marriage on August 29, 1935. Positive but unassuming
devotion characterized her service in the work of the Lord and her church.

James R. Brady, 63, of Auburndale, FL, died Saturday, December 1, 2007. Son of the late
Russell Lester and Agnes Bridger Brady, he previously owned an auction company. James also
was the owner/operator of Second Time Around Furniture Store in Bartow, FL.
He is survived by his wife: Ruth Foree Brady, Auburndale, FL and one daughter, Debbie Sellers,
Oglethorpe, GA.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 6th at the Sulphur Cemetery.
Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jennie R. Brashear
Mrs. Jennie Rankin Brashear, 80, died of a heart attack at her home in Pleasureville, at 8:10
Monday morning. She was the widow of the late Dr. E. J. Brashear.
Mrs. Brashear is survived by one sister: Mrs. George Jones; one nephew: Carroll Wills; two
great nieces and one daughter-in-law: Mrs. Henri Coffman, Dallas, TX, who was here on a visit.
Funeral services were conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon, by
Rev. E. C. Johnson. Burial was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.

Raymond Brent
Raymond Brent, 43, (1900-1943) farmer of the Campbellsburg community, was found dead by
his brother, Joseph Brent, in a Louisville hotel Monday morning.
Funeral services were conducted at the Campbellsburg Christian Church at 2:30 p.m.,
Wednesday, with Rev. C. G. Roe, Carrollton, officiating. Burial was in the Campbellsburg
Cemetery. He was a member of the Campbellsburg Christian Church.
He is survived by his mother: Mrs. Minnie Frances Brent; a sister: Mrs. Mary Kluth, Louisville;
two brothers: Arthur Brent, Louisville and Joseph Brent, Campbellsburg.

James Brewer
James “Jim” Brewer, 69, of Eminence, died Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at Baptist Northeast
Hospice Center. Son of the late John William and Mary Mildred Coons Brewer, he was an
Army Veteran during the Korean Conflict. He was also very involved with the Henry County
Senior Citizens.
He is survived by his wife: Delilah Brewer, Eminence; one sister: Judy Milliner, Eminence; two
brothers: Bobby “Popeye” Brewer and Charlie Brewer, both of Eminence; and several nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Butch Brewer.
A private memorial service was held. Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Hallie S. Bright
Hallie Smith Bright, 86 (1853-1940), died at the home of her son, William Bright, and Mrs.
Bright, in Pleasureville, at 2:00 p.m. October 13, 1940. She was a faithful member of the Baptist
Church. Considering her age, she was always very active and was confined to her bed only two
days.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 10:00 Tuesday morning with Rev. Allen W.
Graves officiating. Burial was in the Smithfield Cemetery.
Besides her son, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. R. J. Duncan, of Nicholasville.

Martha Brown
Martha Louise McFarland Brown, 95, of Owensboro, died July 17, 2007, at hermitage Care and
Rehab Center. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Owen and Sarah Baker West McFarland,
a member of the Lewis Lane Baptist Church, Owensboro and a former teacher and artist.
She is survived by nieces and nephews: Dr. Patricia Bailey, Owensboro, art and Lucy Moore,
Danville, Bill and Christine Moore, Gilby, ND and Nancy and Jim Loftin, Brooksville, FL and
several other great nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Willie Brown.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 20th at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home.
Rev. Paul Strahan and Rev. Mark Slaughter officiated. Graveside services were held at 2 0p.m.
Saturday, July 21st at the Eminence Cemetery. Robert Moore officiated at the graveside service.

Martha Logan Hammond Browne
Martha Logan Hammond Browne, 91, of Pleasureville, passed away on Saturday, October 6,
2007, at Bradford Square Health Center in Frankfort. She was the daughter of the late Harold
K. Hammond and Jennie Nash Shipman Hammond. She was born and lived her entire life near
Pleasureville. She graduated from Pleasureville High School, attended Kentucky Wesleyan
College and graduated from Eastern State Teachers College (now Eastern Kentucky University).
She taught in the Henry County School System for 27 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member
of the Henry County Retired Teachers and a charter member of the Henry County Historical
Society where she served on the Board of Directors. As a life-long member of the Pleasureville
United Methodist Church, she served as secretary of the Administrative Board for many years
and taught Sunday School.
She is survived by a son: Albert Logan Browne, Lexena, VA; a daughter: Barbara Nell Browne
Burnett, Frankfort; four grandchildren: Ryan Justin Burnette and Sean Corey Burnette, both of
Frankfort, Christopher Logan Browne and Tia Nicole Browne, both of Richmond, VA and one
great-grandchild: Cheyene Logan Browne, Richmond, VA. She was preceded in death by her
husband: Albert E. Browne, son-in-law: James G. Burnette, III and
one grandson: James Robert Burnette.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, October 11th at the Sholar Funeral Home in
Pleasureville. Rev. Colin Curtis and Rev. Steve Pace will officiate. Interment will be in the
Pleasureville Cemetery.

Shelbyville. He was a thoroughbred owner and a guitarist.

Browning and Rachel Fowler, both of Louisville; his grandmother: Elizabeth browning,

Saturday. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, KY at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
She was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. A. H. Kleiser of Eminence, where her early life

John C. Bryant
John C. Bryant, 75, (1868-1944) prominent and prosperous farmer of the Franklinton
community, died at 1:10 Sunday afternoon, at the home of his brother, Joe Bryant, Pleasureville.
Death was attributed to ill health of long standing, a recent stroke and infirmities. He was
president of the Peoples Bank of Franklinton at the time of its closing.
He is survived by four sisters: Mrs. Will Bush and Mrs. Ula Mills, both of Eminence, Mrs. Venie
Tharp, Belding , MI and Mrs. Leonard Tingle, Franklinton; four brothers: Noble Bryant and R.
L. Bryant, both of Eminence, Joe Bryant, of Pleasureville and Will Bryant of Merlin, Ontario,
Canada and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at the Franklinton Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday,
with Rev. O. N. Shands, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Franklinton Cemetery.

Jefferson Davis “J. D.” Burton, (1862-1943) prominent farmer of the Sulphur community, died
at a Louisville hospital Tuesday. He was one of the largest landowners in Henry County. He
was in the hospital but a few days.
Short funeral services were conducted at the grave in the Sulphur Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.,
Thursday, with his pastor, Rev. H. M. Wiley, officiating.
Surviving Mr. Burton is one sister, Mrs. Annie B. Dean, and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph Butts, 45, of Campbellsburg, died Monday, August 27, 2007. He was a member of the
Mt. Eden Christian Church, a former member of the Kentuckiana Catfish Association and a

Gene Calvert, 84, of Frankfort, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at Frankfort Regional
Medical Center. He was a former employee for the KY State Police maintenance division, a U.
S. Army veteran of WWII and a member of St. John Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife: Pearl O’Nan Calvert, Frankfort; two daughters: Stephanie Calvert,
Frankfort and Barbara Maupin, Pleasureville; one son: Robert Calvert, Pleasureville; one sister:
Betty Daniels, Frankfort; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by two daughters: Donna and Greta Calvert and one brother, Jerry Calvert.

Robert N. Calvert, 22 (1922-1944), son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank N. Calvert, Jeffersontown, died
Thursday, at the General Hospital, Louisville, of polio. He was the eleventh fatality in Jefferson
County this year. He was the grandson of Mr. W. B. Moody, former prominent attorney of New
Castle.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 a.m. Saturday at Manning’s Chapel. Burial was in the New
Castle Cemetery.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister: Mrs. Mary C. Randall; two brothers: Major
George Calvert, with the armed forces in France and William F. Calvert.

Mary Ann Carman
Mary Ann Carman, 74, of Crestwood, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007. She was an executive
secretary for 47 years at C. Lee Cook Co., Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Oldham County
Republican Party, attended Edenside Christian Church and was the daughter of the late Harrison
Eaton and Gertrude Alice Golden Eaton.
She is survived by two sons: Ken and Kevin Carman and several nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her husband, William T. “Tommy” Carman, one sister, Alice Gray Eaton
and one brother, Byron G. Eaton.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 10th at Oldham County Funeral

Kenneth Carter
Kenneth E. “Kenny” Carter, Jr., 64, of Frankfort, formerly of Pleasureville, died Sunday,
October 21, 2007, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington. He was a former
accountant and worked in construction. He was also a member of the Bridgeport Christian
Church, a former Boy Scout leader and son of the late Kenneth E. Carter, Sr.
He is survived by two sons: Kenneth Wayne Carter and Kelly Gene Carter, both of Frankfort; his
mother: Dorothy James Carter, Frankfort; one brother: David Carter, Cadiz; one sister: Evelyn
Hudson, Frankfort; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Anthony
Carter.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 26th at LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral

Emily Jane Chappell
Emily Jane Chappell died December 18, 1911, 1t 3 o’clock in the morning, at her home near
Glen Mary, Ky., and was buried at the Franklinton Cemetery in Henry County, on December 19,
at 1 o’clock, P.M.
Her age was 43 years, 10 months and 3 days. She was the wife of Mr. H. P. Chappell, they lived
married life 18 years, 10 months and 16 days. There were 9 children born to them in the 18
years; there is one dead, six boys and two girls surviving. The oldest is 17years and 9 months
old. The youngest is three years and six months old, the oldest girl is 13 years and 16 days of
age, the youngest girl is 11 years 8months and 16 days of age.
Mrs. Chappell was a daughter of Jesse and Lucy Ann Mahaffey of Travelers Rest, Owsley
County, Ky., a highly respectable family – her father , a well to do farmer.
Hiram P. Chappell is the son of Burgoin and Emily Chappell, of Welchburg, Jackson County,
Ky., - farmer and miller , of an honorable and ideal life; one of the patriot fathers. They heave
no relatives in Henry County, Ky., where they had resided for 17 years.

James Lindsay Chilton, 75 (1868-1943), well-known farmer, died at his home on Drennon,
Monday night. Death was attributed to heart trouble.

Ervin D. “Hank” Clark, 76, of New Castle, died Saturday, July 28, 2007, at the Baptist East
Hospital, Louisville. Son of the late Charles and Mamie Downey Clark, he was a life-long

Edith L. “Miss Edie” Claspill, 74, of Eminence, died Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at University
of Louisville Hospital. Daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah Hunt Benningfield, she formerly
worked as a nurse’s aide at Homestead Nursing Center.
She is survived by five daughters: Pam Adair, Campbellsburg, Linda Wise, South Carolina,
Victoria Dickinson, Pendleton, Marcia Clark, Eminence and Sandy Adair, Bedford; two sons:
Clay Swihart, Pendleton and Tony Claspill, Shelbyville; special friend, Louise Rose, Eminence;
sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Joseph Claspill, three sisters and four brothers.

Robert Cleveland, Jr.
Robert Cleveland, Jr., 58, of Louisville, died Thursday, October 11, 2007. He was a 1965
graduate of Millersburg Military Institute and a 1970 graduate of Western Kentucky University
with a Bachelor of Science degree. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was in the
Army National Guard. He was a registered representative for Midland National Life and a
broker for Sammon’s Securities. He was a member of the National Association of Life
Underwriters and the National Association of Security Dealers.
He is survived by his wife: Sandra “Sissy” Cleveland, Louisville; two daughters: Elizabeth Ann
Turner and Sara Jane Edmunds and Husband, Gared, all of Bowling Green; one step-daughter:
Tammy Rannells and husband, Chris, Shelbyville; one step-son: Shane Hollar and wife, Julie,

Clarence “C. M.” Clubb
Clarence “C. M.” Clubb, 78 (1864-1942), died at his home in Pleasureville at 5 p.m., Thursday,
December 10, 1942. Mr. Clubb was the last charter member of the Pleasureville Christian
Church, and was one of the Directors of the Central Bank. He was in the undertaking business
for twenty-five years, but retired several years ago on account of ill health.
He is survived by his wife: Mrs. Lillian LeCompte Clubb; one brother: Harry Clubb,
Pleasureville; two step-sons: Jack and Hugh Holland of Frankfort and one step-daughter: Mrs.
Raymond Spears, Milwaukee, WI.

Pleasureville, with burial in the Eminence.

Sallie M. Coleman
Sallie Morris Coleman, 68 (1880-1948), wife of James B. Coleman, died Saturday at 3:40 a.m.,
at the Deaconess Hospital, Louisville. Mr. and Mrs. Coleman moved from New Castle to
Louisville about a year ago.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Hattie Brown and Mrs. Ben Morris of
Louisville; two brothers: Richard Morris and L. G. Morris of New Castle.
The remains were brought to the home of L. G. Morris near New Castle and funeral services
were conducted at the New Castle Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m., Monday, with Rev. E. T.
Curry of Versailles, officiating, assisted by Rev. P. C. Long and Rev. O. B. Crockett. Music was
rendered by Mrs. Coleman’s niece, Miss Louise Morris, assisted by the choir. Burial was in the
Sulphur Cemetery.

Miss Ellen Collins, 79 (1862-1941), died at her home at Drennon Springs early Tuesday
morning, following an illness of several months.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at the Eminence Catholic Church at 9 a.m.,
with her pastor of Shelbyville, celebrating Mass. Burial was in the New Castle Cemetery.
She is survived by a brother, D. R. Collins, of Drennon, who lived with his sister.

Mrs. Mote Scott Coombs, 83, died February 20, 1943, of hardening of the arteries. She had been
ill for several weeks. Her funeral was held February 22nd, at 2 p.m. at the Campbellsburg
Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. H. M. Wiley, assisted by Rev. Jack Akin. Burial was in
the Carrollton Cemetery.
She was the widow of Will Coombs, who died several years ago. She is survived by two stepsons: Joe Coombs, Campbellsburg, and Jim Coombs, Sulphur and several distant relatives.

Eleanor Adams Cox, 87, of Eminence, died Saturday, August 25, 2007. Daughter of the late
Raymond and Evelyn Flemming Adams, she was a member of the Eminence Christian Church.

James Cox, 79 (January 1, 1864 – May 28, 1943), died at Jericho, Sunday. He was the son of the
late Martha Sams and Edward Cox, and was born in Trimble County. He married Nancy Taylor
on October 30, 1884.
He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Harry Maddox, Milton and Mrs. Bessie Moore, Jericho;
four sons: Al, Paul and Deward Cox, all of Louisville and Will Cox, Jericho; thirteen
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four sisters: Mrs. Mary Taylor, Mrs. Carrie Hamilton
and Mrs. Nannie Taylor, all of Trimble County and Mrs. Guyva Gividen, Sulphur.

Cemetery, Tuesday at 10 a.m. He was a member of the Providence Baptist Church, having

Nursing Center in New Castle. She was the daughter of the late Curtis and Lorena Hance
Arnold, a member of the Lockport Baptist Church, and a homemaker. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Ernest Craigmyle and daughter, Sue Bright.

Hazel M. Crawford, 60, of Bedford, formerly of LaGrange, returned to her hHeavenly Father on
Thursday, October 25, 2007. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Gividen and Mary Purvis
and Jack Roberts. Hazel retired from Louisville Bedding in 2005 after 20 years of service. She
was a member of the Buckner Baptist Church.
Hazel is survived by her husband of forty-four years: Elliston “Shorty” Crawford, Bedford; a
daughter: Deeanne Crawford, Lagrange; a sister: June Hickey, Turners Station; one
granddaughter: Jesslyn Crawford, LaGrange and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2007, at Prewitt New Castle Funeral

Walter Forest Davidson, 68, of LaGrange, died Monday, August 13, 2007 at the University of
Louisville Hospital.
He is survived by six children: Julie Robbins and Melissa Sturgeon, both of Hardinsburg;
Tracey Davidson, Birmingham, AL; Robin Bonell, Richmond, VA; Vickie Johnson, Irvington;
and Mike Davidson, Pendleton; three step-children: Larry Brill, Nevarr, FL, Tina Alexander,
Axtel and Steven Brill, Louisville; one brother: Alfred Davidson, Irvington; twenty-seven
grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven brothers:
Orville, Bill, Teddy, Bennie, Ernest, Paul, Sr. and William Henry and one sister: Jo Ellen
Carwile.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 17th, at the Chapel of the Hager Funeral
Home, with a private family burial service following.

Margaret Smith Dean, 89, of Bedford, died Sunday, November 25, 2007, at Baptist Hospital
Northeast Hospice Unit in LaGrange. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Rachel Littrell
and retired from Central State Hospital after 22 ½ years of service.
She is survived by two sons: Lewis Thomas Dean and William Robert Dean, both of Bedford;
one brother: Jimmy Smith, Frankfort; one sister: Evelyn Smith, Frankfort; five grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband: Lewis Dean; one daughter:
Ruth Ann Dean; one son: Roy Allen Dean; two brothers: W. R. Smith and Ralph Smith; and one
sister: Bonnie Smith.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 1st at Ransdell Funeral Home, Bedford.

Church Sunday afternoon, January 30, 1944, for Mrs. T. B. Denu (1881-1944) who died
suddenly, Friday, at her home. Burial was in the Campbellsburg Cemetery.
Before her marriage, Mrs. Denu was a teacher in the Owen County Schools for a numer of years.
She was 62 years old and a daughter of the late G. W. and Elizabeth Steger.
She is survived by her husband: Thomas B. Denu; sisters: Mrs. J. W. Elston, Louisville, Mrs.

Bruce David Derossett, 85, of Campbellsburg, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2007, at
Baptist Northeast Hospital in LaGrange. Son of the late Stonewall Jackson and Mamie Aileen
(Fredrick) Derossett, Bruce was a native of Bath County. He was a farmer and a WWII Army
Veteran. He was a member of the New Castle United Methodist Church and the New Castle
Lions Club. Bruce was preceded in death by his brothers: Leslie, Adwell, William, Johnny and
Winford; his sisters: Gertrude, Bessie, Virgie and Ruby; and a grandson: Eric David Derossett.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years: Anna Elizabeth (Fryman) Derossett, of
Campbellsburg; four sons: Jerry Wayne Derossett and wife, Judy, Louisville, David Hargis

Harold K. Doane, 80, of Frankfort, died Thursday, September 20, 2007, at his home. Son of the
late Richard and Hallie Kindred Doane, he was a WWII Navy Veteran. He retired as an
Industrial Arts Teacher and then worked for the Board of Education for 20 years. He was a
member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, involved with the Masonic Lodge in Beuchel and
the VFW Lodge in Frankfort.
He is survived by his wife: Elizabeth W. Doane, Frankfort; two daughters: Carol Cassady,
Louisville and Paula Doane, Frankfort; one son: Keith Doane, Frankfort; one sister: Marie
Roberts, Bradenton, FL; one brother: Jesse Doane, London and five grandchildren.

the Highview Baptist Church, the Jefferson Gun Club, retired from IBM and a veteran of the

Baugh as representative of District No. 6.

Levi Ellis
Levi Ellis, 91, died at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at his home in Clements Bottom, following an
illness of ten months.
He was married to Miss Angeline Hudson in 1879. to this union two children were born: Joe
Ellis, who survives, and Virgie Ellis. Late Mrs. Jack Clements, who died several years ago. His
wife died 28 years ago.
Mr. Ellis spent his early life around Defoe and was a member of the Union Baptist Church near
there. The family moved to Lincoln County and after several years there, moved to Clements
Bottom in 1919.
In addition to his son, he is survived by one granddaughter, one grandson and one greatgranddaughter.
Funeral services were conducted at the Defoe Christian Church with Rev. P. C. Long officiating.
Burial was in the Defoe Cemetery.

Shelbyville and an active participant in the Shelby County Relay for Life.

Pinkston, Stanford; two sisters: Wanda Thomas and Martha Goins, both of Danville and four

was the son of the late Warren Kinchaloe and Elizabeth Coleman Foree, an Army Veteran of

Middletown Masonic Lodge #732 and New Castle Masonic Lodge #189. He was also a member
of the Sulphur Methodist Church.

Frank W. Goodloe, Sr., 70, of New Castle, died Saturday, February 4, 1984 at the Baptist East
Hospital, Louisville. He was a retired farmer, a retired custodian and school bus driver for the
Henry County Public Schools, a former member of the New Castle Town Board, a member and
treasurer of the Washington Lodge #1513, New Castle, and a trustee and member of the New
Castle Main Street Baptist Church.

Eugene “Gene” Goodridge, 71, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, in Shelbyville. He retired as an
operations agent for American Airlines after 39 years of service and was a member of the
Middletown Christian Church. He was also a Kentucky Colonel, a Tennessee Squire and a past
member of the Cropper Ruritan Club.
He is survived by his wife: Betty Hancock Goodridge, Shelbyville; two daughters: Debbie

William “Billy” Gordon, 80, of Shelbyville, died Monday, August 27, 2007 in Waddy. He was
retired from the military having served in WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He
was also a member of the Shelbyville VFW and the Shelbyville American Legion. He was the
son of the late Willy and Ann Holup Gordon.
He is survived by two daughters: Mary Ohnmeiss, Unityville, PA and Maria Blair, Waddy; three
brothers: Levi Gordon, Ronald Gordon and Eddie Gordon, all of Eminence; one nephew; six
grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Jackie Gordon and his brother, Brian Gordon.

Rosetta Harlow Grigsby, (February 6, 1873 – July 17, 1944) wife of W. P. Grigsby, died
Saturday at her home in Bethlehem. She fell and broke her hip ten years ago and had been an

Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters: Mrs. William Shuck, Mrs. Elmer
Dearinger and Mrs. Walter Carter, and five grandchildren, two of them in the Armed Services,
Gayle Shuck in India and Everett Shuck in the Medical Corps in England; one sister and one
brother.
Funeral services were conducted at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, Monday, with Rev. E. P.
Schaich officiating, assisted by Rev. Forester. Burial was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.

Melvina Crawford Hanley, he served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a
member of the New Castle Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife: Jessie Garrett Hanley, Campbellsburg; two daughters: Sandra
Hanley, Bedford and Rose Hanley, Campbellsburg; one son: Charles “Billy” Hanley, Jr., and

Forrest L. Harmon, 91, of Copeland, FL, passed away on October 14, 2007. Born September 22,
1914 in Sulphur, KY, he was the youngest child of George and Mary (Molly) Harmon.
He was preceded in death by his first wife: Kathryn; his second wife: Dona; and stepson: Mike
Brindley. Forrest is survived by his sons: Don and Larry; grandsons: Chris and Andy;
granddaughter: Katie; great-grandsons: Lucas and Logan; and many nieces and nephews. He is
also survived by a companion: Ann Talley.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter: Mrs. Charles Yount; a son: Charles Henderson; a
brother: W. H. Henderson, all of Bethlehem and a sister, Mrs. June Roberts, LaGrange.

John A. Hoagland
John A. Hoagland, 67, died Sunday, at 4 p.m. at his residence in New Castle. Death was
attributed to heart trouble. He was a farmer for many years and later became deputy sheriff of
Henry County under J. S. Snodgrass and a few years hence was Chief of Police of New Castle.
He was a member of the New Castle Methodist Church and of the New Castle Masonic Lodge
since early manhood.
Funeral services were conducted at the McCarty Funeral Home in New Castle, Tuesday
afternoon at 3:30, with Rev. C. L. Cooper officiating, assisted by Rev. James Highfield. Burial
was in charge of the New Castle Masonic Lodge at the New Castle Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife: Mrs. Lucy May Hoagland; one daughter: Mrs. Walker Thomas; one
son: John A. Hoagland, Jr., Ft. Bragg, NC;, one sister: Miss Lucy Hoagland, Lexington; two
brothers: W. D. Hoagland, Cincinnati and Roy Hoagland, New Castle.

Barbara Holman
Barbara Holman, 68, of LaGrange, died Tuesday, November 20, 2007. She is the daughter of the
late Sherman and Mary Larberg St. Clair, she retired from the Masonic Homes of Kentucky
where she had been a kitchen supervisor. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her husband: Harold Holman, LaGrange; six children: Roger Roution and
wife, Mary, Raliegh, NC, Ricky Roution, Bedford, Jeanie Lewellen and husband, Rick and Jack
Holman and wife, Lynn, all of Campbellsburg and Maurice Holman and wife Sue, Cloverdale,
IN; two sisters: Rose Mefford, Crestwood and Martha Webb, Gilbertsville; one brother: Sonny
St. Clair, New Castle; and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one
sister, Blanche Daniels and one stepdaughter: Vickie O’Connor.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 26th at Heady Radcliffe in LaGrange. Interment
was in the Valley of Rest Cemetery. Rev. Tim Edwards officiated.

Leonard Gayle Holmes
Pfc. Leonard Gayle Holmes, 24 (March 31, 1920 – August 10, 1944), son of Mr. and Mrs. D. S.
Holmes of Warsaw, formerly of Henry County, was killed in action in France on August 10,
1944. He was born and reared near Franklinton, but answered the call to service from Gallatin
County. He was in the 28th Division of the Third Army.
Besides his parents he is survived by nine sisters: Mrs. Mary Erwin and Mrs. James Roberts,
Franklinton, Mrs. Sam Jones and Mrs. Oldham Dunaway, Louisville, Mrs. J. C. Jones, Gratz,
Mrs. Jack Roberts, Miss Lois Holmes, Miss LaVerne Holmes and Miss Ouida Holmes, Warsaw;
four brothers: Seaman First Class Elliott Holmes, in the South Pacific, Seaman Melvin Holmes,
J. D. Holmes and Marshall Holmes.
He was a member of the Drennon Chapel Church. Burial was in the Franklinton Cemetery.

Mary Simms Hopkins, 67(?), (1890-1943), colored, died at her home in Pleasureville, at 7:30
Wednesday morning.

Funeral services will be held at the colored Methodist Church in Pleasureville, at 2 p.m. Friday,

was a heavy equipment operator, a member of the Rhema Christian Assembly and the son of the

Elizabeth Fitzgerald Huffington, 88, of Bedford, formerly of Henry County, died Wednesday,
December 26, 2007, at the Bedford Health Care Center. She was the daughter of the late George
Kelley and Emma Kopp Kelley, former employee of Kawneer and a member of the Union Grove
Christian Church.
She is survived by four children: Cleo Divine, Bedford, Shirley Hamilton, Milton, Terry
Fitzgerald, Bedford and David Fitzgerald, Louisville; four step-children: Dennis Huffinton, Jim
Huffington, Rosie Means and Marie Huffington, all of Indiana; two brothers: Charles and Frank
Kelley, both of New Castle; eight grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands: Luther Calvin Fitzgerald and George
Huffington and eleven siblings: Prentice Kelley, Frances Stoker, Mamie Woods, Stella Tilley,
Lula Wingham, Ralph Carroll Kelley, Marjorie Payne, Emma Catherine Broughton, Everett
Kelley, Raymond Kelley and Henry Kelley.

Fred H. Jacoby, 48 (May 10, 1895 – February 19, 1944), formerly of Pleasureville, a paper
hanger and painter, died at the General Hospital, Louisville, Saturday of meningitis.
Funeral Services were conducted at the grave in the Pleasureville Cemetery, Sunday afternoon,
with Rev. E. P. Schaich officiating, assisted by Rev. R. T. Wilson. The I.O.O.F. Lodge held the
burial ceremony. Rev. Schaich, chaplain of the Patrick Henry Post, American Legion, presented
the flag to Mrs. Jacoby.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Fannie Mae Roberts Jacoby, he is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Elry
Clubb, Franklinton, and Mrs. O. L. Stalker, Pleasureville, and a brother, Lorenzo Jacoby,
Evnsville, IN and three nieces and one nephew.

Virgie Lee James, 89, of New Castle, died Monday, October 22, 2007, at Jewish Hospital,
Shelbyville. Daughter of the late Silas and Rosalie Carter James, she was a homemaker and

She is survived by three sisters: Nola James, Crestwood, Alma Chisholm, New Castle and
Glenna Coleman, Sulphur; one brother: Kenneth James, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

William James
William “ Rodney” James, 65 of Bethlehem, died Sunday, November 25, 2007, at the University
of Louisville Hospital. Son of the late Howard Thomas and Irma G. Tharp James, he was an
electronic technician for EPA of KY. He retired as an electronic technician for the Federal
Aviation Administration. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War, retired from the Air
Force after serving eight years of active duty and then from the Air Force Reserves in 1987 after
19 years of service.
He is survived by his wife: Alma Roberts James, Bethlehem; two daughters: Marquita James
Culroo and husband, James, Buffalo, IN and Melinda James Lopez and husband, Frank, Hoover,
AL; two sons: Michael Thomas James and wife, Sharon, Lowell, IN and Mark Andrew James
and wife, Heather, Advance, NC; two sisters: Wanda Zimmerman, Cummings, Georgia and
Diana Clifford, Bedford; fifteen grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by one sister: Helen Trapp.

Bernard Howard “Bumper” Johnson, 64, of Madison, IN, died Friday, August 10, 2007, at The
Waters of Clifty Falls, Madison, IN. He was the son of the late William Gobel and Rotha Cull
Johnson, employed as a steeple jack all his life, was a member of the Jefferson Post 9, Sons of
the American Legion, the former Eagles Lodge and the Masonic Moose Lodge.
He is survived by two sons: Bumper Johnson, Jr. and wife, Candy, Madison, IN and Keih
Johnson and his companion, Jeannie, Carrollton; one daughter: Jeanette “Jae” Jones, and
husband, Tim, Eminence; three sisters: Freda Melton, Madison, IN, Alma Boldery, Milton
and Wanda Debusk, Hartsville, IN; one brother: Bobby Johnson, Madison, IN; six grandchildren
and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by six brothers:

2007, at his residence. He was the son of the late Victor Johnson, Sr. and Iva Hatch Johnson.

He is survived by his daughter: Patricia A. Widney and husband, Jerry, Canton, OK; one brother:
Victor Johnson, Jr.; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one daughter, Melody Jones.

Bobby Gene Jones, 76, of Louisville, died Sunday, November 11, 2007 at the Hillcreek Manor
Nursing Home in Louisville. He was a native of Lockport. Son of the late J. C. Jones and
Mayme Holmes Jones, he was an auctioneer. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Ray
and Ira Jones.
He is survived by one daughter: Cindy Biggers Sipes and husband, Kevin, Louisville; one son:
Michael Jones, Louisville; an aunt: Laverne New, Eminence and three grandchildren.

Leslie Douglas Jones
Sgt. Leslie Douglas Jones, 19 (1923-1942), son of Mr. and Mrs. Turner Jones, of Elmburg, but
native Henry Countians until last spring, drowned in the Ohio River near Dam 42 at 2:50 p.m.,
Wednesday, when a rubber boat which was being used in maneuvers apparently was caught in a
whirlpool and overturned.
No funeral services had been planned as of this date, as the body had not been recovered.
Besides his parents, Sgt. Jones is survived by two other brothers in the service: Sgt. Chester
Eugene Jones, a Marine, located at Norfolk, VA and Sgt. Paul Jones, on maneuvers but stationed
at Fort Benning, GA. Three other brothers and four sisters also survive and are James Jones,
Louisville; Mrs. Juanita Gardner, Shepherdsville; Mrs. Helen Troxell, Mt. Gilead; Mrs. Jessica
Burton, Ft. Knox; Wilbur Lee Jones, Kenneth Dale Jones and Sylvia Dean Jones, all of Elmburg.
Burial was in the Franklinton Cemetery.

Minnie T. Jones
Minnie T. Jones, 69 (1874-1943), died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Allen Chilton, Tuesday,
December 1, 1942. Before her marriage she was Miss Minnie Teeters. She was married 49
years ago to William Jones, who died March 11, 1931.
She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Allen Chilton, New Castle, Mrs. Cline Mahoney,
Campbellsburg and Mrs. Raymond Wainscott, Franklinton; four sons: Herbert Jones, Price Jones
and Morris Jones, all of New Castle and Pvt. Ramey G. Jones, who is in the armed forces,
stationed in California.
Funeral services were conducted at the Port Royal Methodist Church at 2 p.m., December 6th,
with Rev. Parrish officiating. Burial was in the Port Royal Cemetery.

Benjamin Franklin Kingston, 73, died Saturday, September 21, 1940, at his home near Marengo,
IN. He was born in Anderson County, but spent most of his life in Oldham and Henry Counties.
Several years ago Mr. Kingston and son bought a farm near Marengo. He was a member of the
Chestnut Grove Christian Church.
He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Lucy Cox, Jericho and Mrs. Rosa Roberts, Smithfield;
one son: Jesse Kingston, Marengo, IN; four sisters; two brothers; five grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
The body was brought to LaGrange Monday morning and services were held at the grave at
11:00 a.m. by the Rev. C. R. Lanman.

Robert Russell “Rusty” Kiser, 38, of Lawrenceburg, died Monday, December 10, 2007 At his
residence. He was the son of Dorothy Hall Kiser of Lawrenceburg and the late Teddy Kiser, Sr.
He was an I.T. Technician with Landmark Community Newspaper, Inc., and a member of the
Anderson Masonic Lodge #90.

Doris Shrader Lawrence, 91, of Louisville, formerly of Henry County, died Tuesday, November
6, 2007, at the Episcopal Church Home. She was a retired teacher for the Jefferson County
Schools, a member of the Woman’s Club of Louisville, former president of the University of
Louisville Woman’s Club and a member of the founding board of directors for the St. Matthews
area ministries.
She is survived by her daughter: Judy Miller; two sons: Bill Lawrence and wife, Pam, Denver.
CO, and Gary Lawrence and wife, Karen; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Dave Lawrence.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 9th at St. Matthews Methodist Church.
Interment was in the Sulphur Cemetery.

Funeral services for W. O. LeCompte, 60, (1880-1940) who died in Nashville, TN, Sunday,
October 13, 1940, at 12:30 a.m., were conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday, with Rev. Roud Shaw officiating. Burial was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.
He is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Fannie Reynolds and Mrs. Brown Hamilton, of Fulton, MO
and Mrs. C. M. Clubb, Pleasureville.
Mr. LeCompte was born and reared in Pleasureville and had been connected with the Remington
Arms Company for 33 years, stationed at Nashville for 30 years.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Caplinger Lee
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Caplinger Lee, 31 (October 19, 1861 – December 24, 1942), died at a hospital
in Louisville on Christmas Eve. She fell three weeks before and broke her hip causing her death.
Her funeral was held at Lee E. Crallee Funeral Home in Louisville with burial in the
Campbellsburg Cemetery.
She was the widow of M. L. Lee, who formerly was owner and operator of a department store in
Campbellsburg. She is survived by two sons: Wallace Lee of California and D. F. Lee of
Louisville and one daughter: Miss Edith Lee of Washington, D. C., several grandchildren, three
sisters and one brother.

Ivette Lindsay
Ivette Y. Lindsay, 44, of Eminence, died Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Advocate Trinity Hospital
in Chicago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Eminence.
She is survived by her mother: Delores Lindsay, Louisville; three sisters: Eanna Evans,
Louisville, Patricia Patterson, and Danita Patterson, both of Shelbyville; five brothers: Orvell
Lindsay, Dumpfries, VA, Oliver Goodloe, Kim Goodloe, Dana Patterson and Gary Patterson, all
of Shelbyville, and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, August 30th at the Eminence First Baptist
Church. Rev. Charles Duncan, assisted by Rev. Robert Fields, officiated. Interment was in the
New Castle G.U.O.O.F. Cemetery. Prewitt Eminence Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Joseph Milton Lindsey
Joseph Milton Lindsey, 84 (1858-1943), died at his home near Lacie, Saturday. He was the last
member of his large family, early settlers in Henry County. He was a member of the Hopewell
Baptist Church since he was sixteen years old.
He is survived by his wife: Malinda Tingle Lindsey; two daughters: Mrs. Kizzie Lindsey,
Louisville and Mrs. Georgia Kendall, Bedford; eight sons: Tom Lindsey, Orville Lindsey and
Joe Lindsey, all of Louisville, John Lindsey, Bedford, Jess Lindsey, Port Royal, Willie Lindsey
and Elva Lindsey both of Turners Station and Roy Lindsey of Camp Hood, TX.

Charles A. “Cracker” Long, Jr., 42, of New Castle, died Friday, October 19, 2007. Son of the
late Charlie Long, Sr., he was a 1983 graduate of Henry County High School and a mechanic.

Allie Elizabeth Long; two sons: Charles Austin “Bubba” Long III and Bobby Austin Long;

Erwin “Dyke” Louden, 88, of Eminence, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2007. Son of the
late Lee and Grace (Erwin) Louden, he was a farmer and a member of the Point Pleasant
Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife: Hazel (Harlow) Louden; daughter:
Barbara Louden and four brothers: Ralph, Thurman, Selby and Garnett Louden.

Lee Prather; mother: Pamela Louden; one brother: Joshua Louden; one sister: Christy McKenzie;

Mrs. Sallie Louden, 75 (December 2, 1869 – August 1, 1944), died Tuesday, August 1, 1944, at
her home in Franklinton. She had been in failing health for two years and suffered a stroke. She
was a member of the Berea Christian Church for many years.
She is survived by one daughter: Mrs. Grover Teters of Echo Dell; two sisters: Mrs. Annie
Woods, Florida and Mrs. Chris Raisor, Clay Village; one half-brother: Hilton Stivers, Louisville;
four grandchildren: Mrs. Hazel Jones, Drennon Springs, Lloyd Roberts, Louisville, Huey Lee
Roberts and Herman Roberts, Franklinton.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Franklinton Baptist Church, with Rev. James
Highfield officiating, assisted by Rev. E. P. Schaich. Burial was in the Franklinton Cemetery.

Mrs. Bettie Massie Maddox, 89 (1854-1943), died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Katherine
Jones, near Port Royal, Saturday morning. She was a member of the Port Royal Baptist Church
and the widow of the late J. S. Maddox.
Funeral services were conducted at the Port Royal Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, with
Rev. Raymond Foree officiating, assisted by Rev. Jack Akin and Rev. E. N. Chandler. Burial
was in the Port Royal Cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Allie M. Hammond, Eminence and Mrs.
Bernice Pollard, Port Royal; and son: Col. F. M. Maddox, Clearwater, FL and a foster son:
Robert Christie, Cropper. Eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.

Danny Manns
Danny Manns, 56, of New Castle, passed away on Monday, July 16, 2007. Danny was selfemployed as a carpenter. He served with the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War and was a
member of the National Rifle Association. Danny was preceded in death by his father, Clyde
Manns.
He is survived by three daughters: Sarah Manns, Smithfield, Lesley Manns, Eminence and
Lindsey Manns Boler, LaGrange; his parents: Betty Ann and Alger Mosley of Shelby, OH; two
brothers: Steve Mosley, Sylvania, OH and Don Mosley, Peoria, AZ; three sisters: Phyllis Manns,

Lillie Milligan Marshall
Mrs. Lillie Milligan Marshall, 76, widow of Charles Edward Marshall of Henry County and New
York, N.Y., died Monday, May 24, 1943, at her home in Louisville.
Mr. and Mrs. Marshall lived at the Casa Blanca farm on the Kentucky River in Henry County
since coming from New York in 1912. Mr. Marshall passed away in 1930 and Mrs.
Marshalllived at the farm until two years ago, when she moved to Louisville. She suffered a
stroke on May 13th and gradually got worse until her death.
Burial was in Frankfort on May 27th in the Marshall lot.
She is survived by her sisters: Miss Leone Milligan and Mrs. Ethel Hunter Funk and a brother
Robert Milligan.

Laura Virginia Wright Mason, 79, of Eminence, died Sunday, September 30, 2007. She was the
daughter of the late John and Elnora Wright, a lifetime member of the Pleasant View Baptist

She is survived by her husband, Julius Mason, Sr., Eminence; six children: Joyce A. Winburn,

Whitney and husband, Robert, Julius Mason and Leo Mason and wife, Brenda, all of Eminence;

Mrs. Ella B. Riner Massie, 81 (1862-1943), died at the home of her son, Rev. Hosea Massie, and
Mrs. Massie in Covington, at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday. She made her home in Pleasureville, but on
account of illness, had been making her home with her son for the past seven months.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., at the Pleasureville Methodist
Church, of which she was a member. Rev. C. P. Long will officiate, assisted by Rev. R. T.
Wilson.
Besides her son, she is survived by one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Nova Eugene “Butch” Matheney, 64, of Pleasureville, formerly of Fairdale, died Thursday,
October 25, 2007, at the Henry Medical Center in Stockbridge, GA. He was owner of NEM

Matheney.

Monday night. He retired three years ago, having moved to Carrollton in 1925, from Ghent,

Church.

Infirmary in Louisville after a long period of illness.

William McHatton
William McHatton (1846-1927), a venerable citizen, dropped dead last Thursday afternoon just
after he had returned from Gratz, where he attended the funeral of W. R. Minish. His body was
taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Parrish, where Mr. McHatton had spent the winter.
Mrs. Parrish was his nearest relative in this county, being a double cousin. A funeral service
held at the Parrish home Saturday morning was conducted by Rev. W. J. Clarke, assisted by Rev.
J. E. Baird and the remains were taken to Port Royal for burial.
Mr. McHatton was born and reared in this county and was 81 years old; he was a kind-hearted
friend and neighbor and a good citizen. He was a member of the Methodist Church, was a
Mason and an Odd Fellow and served in the Northern Army in the Civil War.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Shannon, of Eminence, and two sons: Tom, of
Connersville, IN and John H., of Port Royal.

Paul McKee, Jr.
Paul McKee, Jr., 86, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, in Carrollton. He held BSE and MSE
degrees from the University of Michigan and was an instructor at the Willow Run B-24 Factory
School. He worked at Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH where he had an active role in the
development of such aircraft as the X-3, F-100, F-104, C-141 and F-15, where he retired in 1977.
He is survived by two sons: James McKee and wife, Pepper, Port Royal and Richard McKee,
Lansing, MI; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
two sons: Paul and Scott McKee.
Interment was in the Ohioville Cemetery, Burt Lake, Michigan. Ransdell Funeral Home,
Campbellsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Canteen Corporation at the Kentucky Ford Truck Plant.

husband, Buster, Linda Moreland and husband, Tommy, Diane Gammons and husband, Larry
and Libby Ann Edds and husband, Jim; three sons: Gerald Eli Miller, Gary Wayne and wife,

W. R. Minish
Mr. W. R. Minish, one of Owen County’s oldest residents, died suddenly at his home at Gratz
Morning morning. He had been in declining health for the past several months and his death
came as no surprise to his family and friends.
Mr. Minish was 89 years of age and was the oldest druggist in the state of Kentucky, having
entered the drug business in 1855.
He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. J. E. Brown, Harrodsburg, Mrs. Findlay Smith, Carthage,
OH and Mrs. Dr. Suter, Campbellsburg.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. G. Prather, were held on Wednesday and burial was at
Gratz.

Byron Montague, 77 (1865-1941), died Monday, August 5, 1941, after an illness of three
months. His wife, who was Miss Mollie Longest, died about 24 years ago.

Eminence.
Funeral services were conducted at his home Wednesday morning by his pastor, Rev. Norwood,
of the Smithfield Christian Church. Interment was in the Smithfield Cemetery.

Ray Moore, 55, of Bethlehem, died Sunday, August 19, 2007 at his residence. He owned Ray
Moore and Sons Excavating and was the son of the late Isaiah and Bessie Walker Moore.
He is survived by his wife: Linda Hockensmith Moore, Bethlehem; one son: William Charles
Moore, Bethlehem; two daughters: Sandra Gail Villegas, Frankfort and Latosha Mae Moore,

Morgan Mitchell
Morgan Glenn Mitchell, 48, died Saturday, December 8, 2007, in Louisville. He was a barn
builder, a member of Highland Baptist Church and a member of the Shelbyville Moose Lodge.
He was the son of the late James William Mitchell, Sr. and Jean LeMaster Mitchell.

Charles Curtis Morgan, 77, of Carrollton, died Sunday, November 4, 2007, at the Carroll County
Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Worthville Baptist Church, the
son of the late Herbert Morgan and Florence Woods Morgan and a former school bus driver for
the Carroll County School System.
He is survived by his wife: sue Carolyn Johnson Morgan, Carrollton; two sons: Dan Morgan and
wife, Christy, Vevay, IN and David Morgan and wife Cathy, Bedford; three sisters: Rebecca
Tull, Madison, IN, Verna Mann, Lexington and Rosetta Cox, Campbellsburg; two half-brothers:
Rodney and Earl Morgan, both of Henry County; two half-sisters; six grandchildren and several
nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by one brother, Roger Morgan,
one sister: Catherine Southward and one half-brother, Edward Morgan.

Mrs. Laura Jennings Morgan, 84 (1857-1944), died Saturday night at the home of her son, Jack
Morgan, in Sligo. She had been in failing health for some time and suffered a stroke from which
she never rallied.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence Monday afternoon, with Rev. E. T. Curry of
New Castle, officiating. Burial was in the Sligo Cemetery.
Besides her son with whom she made her home, she is survived by another son: Claude Morgan,
Broken Bow, OK; a brother: Pryor Jennings, Trimble County; one granddaughter, Mrs. William
Hancock and a great granddaughter, Elena Gayle Hancock, Sligo.

Grover T. “TY” Noe
Grover T. “TY” Noe, 88, of Floyd’s Knobs, IN passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at
Norton Hospital.
He was a native of Henry County, the retired secretary/treasurer of E. L. Noe and Sons, Inc., a U.
S. Coast Guard veteran of WWII and a member of the Shively Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Peggy Miller; his son: Minor Noe and wife, Jean;
daughters: Nancy Kustanbauter and husband, Roy and Kirby Sullivan and husband, John;
grandchildren: Ashley Noe, Ann Tolbert and husband, Jeff, Neil Kustanbauter and wife, Molly,
Jessica Tyler and husband, Jake and Sarah and Hannah Sullivan and five great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Shively Christian Church. Owen Funeral

Roy Wilburn Nolin
Roy Wilburn Nolin, 35 (1909-1943), was shot and killed by his brother-in-law, Charles Ricketts,
15, at dusk Sunday. They were squirrel hunting on Nolin’s farm near Lacie, when Nolin sat
behind a stump to rest and Ricketts saw his head and fired, thinking he was shooting at a squirrel.
The rifle bullet went through his head, causing almost instant death.
The Ricketts youth said his brother-in-law’s head was moving just above the stump and he
mistook it for a squirrel. Sheriff Bishop Adcock investigated the shooting and said no charge
had been placed against the youth.
Nolin was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lego Nolin, Franklinton, and Ricketts is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. E. B. Ricketts, Lacie.
Funeral services for Nolin will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, at the Franklinton
Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Franklinton Cemetery.
Besides his parents, Nolin is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Ricketts Nolin; three children:
Logan Ray Nolin, Grace Nolin and Joyce Nolin, whose ages are four, three and two; four sisters:
Mrs. Giles James, Shelby County, Miss Ruth Nolin, Miss Glenna Nolin and Miss Martha Nolin,

Lew Oliver, 80, of Winchester, formerly of Henry County, died Monday, October 29, 2007, at
his residence. He was a retired Hobart Manufacturing employee, a U. S. Army Veteran and the
son of the late Cordellia Erwin and Francis Sanford Oliver.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie Mae Copher Oliver; one son: Neal Oliver and wife, Regina, all
of Winchester; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mary Ricketts Orem, 83 (1859-1943), widow of the late W. O. Orem, prominent insurance
man of Campbellsburg, died at her home in Campbellsburg, Sunday morning. She suffered a
broken hip a year ago, and had been an invalid since. She was a member of the Campbellsburg
Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, with Rev. Jack T Akin,
pastor of the Baptist Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. James E. Wright. Burial was in the
New Castle Cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Lucy Adkins, Middlesboro, and Mrs. Paul Boyer,
Campbellsburg; three sons: E. B. Orem, New York City, J. L. Orem, Miami and Hugh R. Orem,
Campbellsburg; two sisters: Mrs. Mattie Boulware, Springfield and Mrs. Leona Hutchins,

William Oscar “W. O.” Orem, 83, (1858-1941) died at his home in Campbellsburg, at 11:45
p.m., Saturday, August 23, 1941. He had been bedfast for more than three years.

Dr. S. A. Staley, of Raleigh, NC, assisted by Rev. W. T. Holland.

George H. Owens
George H. Owens, 83 (1860-1944), poet laureate of Henry County and for fifty years cashier of
the Citizens Bank of Port Royal, died at his home in Port Royal at 6 p.m., Tuesday, following an
illness of several years. He resigned as cashier of the bank in 1937 and retired.
The deceased was called on many times during his active life to write poetry for various
occasions. His best poems; however, were of a personal nature such as the one published in the
Local in November, 1937, about the time he decided to retire.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 2 p.m., Thursday, with Rev. J. W. Parrish
officiating. Burial was in the Port Royal Cemetery. He was a member of the Christian Church
and the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife: Mrs. Mae Sadifer Owens; two daughters: Mrs. J. M. Schultz,
Wauchula, FL and Mrs. A. M. Honaker, Port Royal; one son: Cpl. Robert S. Owens, stationed in
the Aleutian Islands. Six grandchildren also survive.

James Parrott
James Edward Parrott, 78, of Eminence, died Thursday, October 11, 2007 at Homestead Nursing
Center in New Castle. He was the son of the late Herbert and Gladys Riley Parrott, a Korean
War Army Veteran and a member of the Eminence Baptist Church. He was a graduate of the
University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and owned and operated Parrott Drugs in
Eminence.
He is survived by his wife: Lois Jean Bailey Parrott, Eminence; three daughters: Donna
Francisco, Louisville, Connie Uleary, New Castle and Valerie Mahoney and husband, Johnny,
Turners Station; one son: James Edward Parrott II and wife, Julie, Louisville; one brother:
William Herbert Parrott, Louisville and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one
sister: Betty Jean Parrott Huber and one son: Michael Parrott.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 15th at Prewitt Eminence Funeral Home.

James R. Pendleton
James R. Pendleton, 73 (1870-1943), died Thursday at his home in Turners Station, following an
illness of several months. He suffered a stroke on April 21, from which he never rallied.
He was married to Miss Lucy Wilson in 1896, and she survives. He is also survived by one
brother: George Pendleton, Campbellsburg; two sisters: Mrs. Mary Samuels, Cincinnati and Mrs.
Eliza Jones, Defoe; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was a faithful member of the Methodist Church, where his funeral services were conducted at
2 p.m., Sunday, by Rev. E. C. Hardin, of Barton, OH and Rev. Parrish, his pastor. Interment was
in the Port Royal Cemetery.

W. H. Peniston
W. H. Peniston, 84 (1860-1944), of Lacie, died at Anchorage Hospital, Friday. He suffered a
broken hip two and one half years ago and had been an invalid since that time. Death was due to
pneumonia.
In young manhood he married Mrs. Lucy Tandy Peniston, who preceded him in death six years
ago. He had been a faithful member of the Hopewell Baptist Church since 1920.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Carl Whirley, in the home of Mr. Tandy Peniston, the
only living child.
There are three grandchildren: Mr. W. H. Peniston, Capt. L. T. Peniston amd Mrs. Billy Costel
and two great grandchildren, Billy and J. T. Peniston.

Howard A. Phillips, Jr., 81, of Jeffersontown, died Sunday, December 16, 2007, at Oak Tree
Hospital at Baptist Northeast in LaGrange. He was the son of the late Howard A. Phillips, Sr.
and Gretna Clayville Phillips, a U. S. Army veteran, a member of the American Legion and a
former employee of General Electric.
He is survived by two sisters: Jane Young and Janet Tharp, both of Campbellsburg. He was
preceded in death by two brothers: Marvin C. Phillips and Wendell H. Phillips; and two sisters:
Virginia Frazier and Bernice Jones.
Memorial services will be held May 10th in Jeffersontown. Interment was in the Campbellsburg
Masonic Cemetery. Ransdell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Vincent Poole, of Pendleton, has received a letter from Powell A. Fraser, Captain, Infantry
Commanding, regarding the death of her son, Leonard Poole, in the Southwest Pacific Area of
December 31, 1942. The letter follows:

Dear Mrs. Poole,
Although I have never met you I feel I know what kind of Mother you are by the type of son you
have given to our country. I want to tell you as much of the details about Leonard’s death that
are permissible at this time.
He was a rifleman in a rifle platoon when he was killed. On December 31st Company “E” waqs
ordered to attack across a small stream of water on to a strip of ground where several enemy pill
boxes were located. Leonard went forward and carried out his duty in the traditional manner of
an American soldier. It was during this attack that he was killed.
There is a sacred spot along the New Guinea coast that belongs to you and other Mothers in
America. Here our chaplain conducted the final services for your son. The crosses are lined up
with proper identification on each.
There is nothing I can say that will fill the empty space in your heart but we have learned here on
the fields of battle to look to the hills of God for strength.
I do not know what memories you have of Leonard but always remember “this was his finest
hour.”

Mrs. Allie Popp (1876-1943), wife of James Popp, died at her home in Campbellsburg, Saturday,
July 31, 1943, at 9 a.m. She had been a member of the Campbellsburg Baptist Church for fifty
years. She had been in failing health for several years, but was able to be up until Thursday,
when she fell and broke her hip.

William T. “Tom” Prather, Jr.
William T. “Tom” Prather, Jr., 86, of Campbellsburg, passed away on Saturday, November 10,
2007 at Baptist Northeast Hospital, LaGrange. Son of the late Mayme Ada Greene and William
T. Prather, Sr., Tom was a retired business man, presiding as former owner and operator of
Barnett Lumber in Campbellsburg for 34 years. He was a member of the Campbellsburg Baptist
Church. Tom was decorated WWII Army Captain, serving in the 87th Infantry Division under
General Patton’s 3rd Army. He was a recipient of The Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Tom
was preceded in death by his wife: Doris Louise Prather; sister: Martha Jean Cox; two brothers:
Richard Allen and Rex Prather.
He is survived by a daughter: Lynda Gerding and husband, Adolfo, LaGrange and a son:
William T. “Bill” Prather, III and his wife, Tammy, Glasgow; a sister: Eleanor June Rolph,
Versailles and a granddaughter: Whitney Lyle Prather, Owenton.

Mrs. Arianna Pryor died at the Castle Hotel, New Castle, Friday, April 23, 1943, at 6 p.m.. She
was stricken December 30, with an acute heart attack from which she failed to recover. Before
her marriage to the late Mr. William Pryor, she was Miss Arianna Gaines, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. W. R. Gaines, Franklin County.
She is survived by one son, William Muncey Pryor; two grandchildren: Muncey and Leah Mae
Pryor; a sister: Mrs. W. E. Muncey and two nieces: Miss Lillian Muncey and Mrs. Arianna
Muncey. She was a faithful member of the Christian Church, a person of fortitude, great courage
and loyalty.

Mrs. Lula Dawson Radcliff, 81, died at her home in New Castle, at 8:20 p.m., Sunday. She went
to the polls Saturday to cat her vote and had to be taken home. She was a member of the New

was retired from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

faithful member of the Methodist Church.

Lucille Reeves, 91, of Eminence, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at the Masonic
Home in Shelbyville. Daughter of the late Samuel and Carrie Bell Wainscott Martin, Lucille
was a member of the Eminence Christian Church and a Sunday School teacher for over 79 years.
She also served as the Sunday School Superintendent. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Lester V. Reeves, Sr.; a son: Harry Reeves and brother: Buford Martin.
She is survived by a son: Lester Reeves, Jr. and wife, Vonda, Versailles; two granddaughters:
Connie Schuermeyer and husband, Bob, Lexington and Joanne Culver and husband, Larry,
Louisville; two grandsons: David Reeves and wife, Kate, Murray and James Reeves, Chicago,

Mary Agnes Reid, 89, of Louisville, formerly of Shelby County, died Monday, September 17,
2007, at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville. She was a homemaker amd former nurses aide
at Shelby Manor Nursing Home, a member of the Shelbyville Church of the Nazarene and the
daughter of the late Blaine and Gladys Kelly Adler.
She is survived by one son: Stanley Reid, Bardstown; two daughters: Joyce Melton and Wanda
Heaton, both of Simpsonville; one brother: Kenneth Adler, Eminence; one sister: Norma Smith,
Eminence; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 21st at Hall-Taylor Funeral Home,
Shelbyville. Interment was in the Simpsonville Masonic Cemetery.

Delbert Robison
Delbert Lee Robison, 67, of Sulphur, died Thursday, August 16, 2007. He was the son of the
late George William and Florine Doke Robison, a printing equipment operator with the
Department of Mines and Minerals in Lexington, served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam
War and was a member of the Henry County DAV. He was also a member of the Walnut Street
Baptist Church, Louisville.
He is survived by three sisters: Beulah Ramsey, Venice, FL, Clorine Joy Robison, Milton and
Sherian LaVerne Tingle, Campbellsburg; three brothers: Jerry Robison and George Louis
Robison, both of Sulphur and James Clifford Robison, West Palm Beach, FL and three
grandsons. He was preceded in death by one daughter: Dianna Lynn Robison, one sister: Mary
E. Louden and two brothers: Herman and E. A. Robison.
A private memorial graveside service was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 21st, at the Sulphur
Cemetery. Rev. Nick Coleman, Sulphur, officiated.

Stella Williams
Stella Williams, 40, of Todd’s Point, died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at Baptist Northeast Hospice,
LaGrange.
She is survived by one daughter: Julia Williams, Eminence; parents: Jimmy and Libby Wilson
William, Eminence; four sisters: Anna Koopkkia, Brighten, MI, Frances Sanders, Charlestown,
IN, Frieda Nation and Brenda Hyatt, both of Shelbyville and one brother: James “Bud”
Williams, Campbellsburg. She was preceded in death by one son: Austin James Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, July 11th) at Prewitt Eminence
Funeral Home. Rev. Paul E. Perry of Campbellsburg will officiate. Interment will be in Shady
Lawn Cemetery.
