OCEAN COUNTY COLLEGE Professor’s Course Information Sheet Professor’s Name: Katherine Dillon – Associate Professor of Business School of Social Science and Human Services Course Title: BUSN 211 Word Processing Machine Transcription Course Description: This course is designed to help the student to develop machine transcription skills. Through a word processing center simulation, the student assumes the role of an intern and learns to become a proficient transcriptionist in a variety of different business situations—to include banking, legal, and medical. Using a stand-a-lone computer and software of choice, students will produce error free documents representative of the business environment and vocabulary associated to the organization. Required Textbooks: TRANSCRIPTION SKILLS FOR BUSINESS, 7th Edition, Meyer, Moyer, and Mallison; Regents Prentice Hall, 2003 Required Materials: One formatted 3 ½ inch diskette must be purchased and brought to class in addition to the above text. Also the purchase of any acceptable document reference manual is recommended as a guide. Course Standards: Students will be expected to be on time for classes. Classes will commence and end at the established time. Students who are late or absent should make their own arrangements for any lecture materials, notes, ect. That is missed. Attendance Policy: each student will be expected to attend all class meetings. The maximum limit of absences as established will be dealt with in accordance to the college catalog section entitled, “Class Attendance”. Transcription tape tests cannot be made up due to the limitation of time versus document results. Apply the concepts of language arts, while listening and transcribing from a machine transcription unit to a personal stand-a-lone computer. All cell phones are never to be used in the classroom. Evaluation: The final grade will be based on: Language Skills Posttest Transcription Test Tapes 30 percent 70 percent End of course standard is first-time mailable communication in a minimum amount of time. Students will not be aware of what material will be graded as work production during test tapes. Student’s greatest effort should be put forth at each class session.
