ENGLISH 274 INTRODUCTION TO SHORT FICTION

Attendance: Every student is expected to attend every class. Work missed during class can not
be made up.
Quizzes & In-Class Writing: Either group or individual may be given at any time. These will
graded as either check – no change in point total, check plus, plus 2 points on your semester total,
or check minus two points on your semester total. These cannot be made up.
Reading Journal: Each student is required to keep a Reading Journal and write in this journal
responses to every reading assignment [See Attached “Keeping a Reading Journal”]
At least twice per semester, your entire journal will be collected, scanned, and returned.
These will be averaged to constitute 40 % of your grade.
At least four times a semester I will collect unannounced a recent journal assignment.
These will be averaged to constitute 20% of your grade.
Exams: Two essay exams will be given. The exams will be averaged to constitute 30% of your
grade. Failure to take any of these exams will result in failure of the class.
Class Discussion: 10% of your course grade depends on your contribution to discussion in class
and on line -- quality not quantity.
Personal Conference: Students are invited to schedule a personal conference with me at anytime.
