Mike Briscoe “Mike Briscoe's exquisite paintings have that slightly surreal quality of an Edward Hopper painting. But, whereas Hopper's paintings have figures in them waiting for something to happen, or are imbued with a sense of loneliness, Briscoe's paintings are about encounters and events. They are paintings painted for the joy of painting, and for the joy of looking at them; and with the paint being used for its intensity of colour and sensuality. “They also reflect a pleasure we can all take part in. The expectation and anticipation of a place we have never been to before, but have imagined, or are to visit, may be more exciting than the reality- ‘a description of an encounter between the artist and a corner of the world he lives in.’” From Paul Collinson in: ‘West Coast to East; a Corner of the World’, Quay Arts, Kingston Upon Hull SOLO EXHIBITIONS 2007- Brian Sinfield Gallery 2006- Martin Tinney Gallery 2004- Martin Tinney Gallery 2002- Martin Tinney Gallery 2001- MOMA, Machynlleth 2001- Royal Camberian Academy 1999- Quay Arts, Kingston-upon-Hull 1998- Blackthorn Gallery, Birkenhead GROUP EXHIBITIONS 2012- “Hyperrealism Now!”, Plus One Gallery, London 2011- “Celebrating 10 Years of Hyperrealism Today”, Plus One Gallery, London 2011- “Winter show” Plus One Gallery, London 2010- “Winter show” Plus One Gallery, London 2010- 2008- Martin Tinney Gallery 2009- Plus One Gallery 2008- Lemon Street Gallery 2007- Tabernacle Collection 2006- Brian Sinfield Gallery 2006- Discerning Eye Mall Galleries, London 2002/2007- Martin Tinney Gallery 2001- Leading Welsh Artists, Cork Street, London 2001- 20/21 British Arts Fair, London 2001- ‘Summer Exhibition’, Martin Tinney Exhibition 2000- “The British Are Coming”, Museum of Southwest Texas 1999- Royal National Eisteddfod, Ynys Mon 1998- Blackthorn Gallery, Germany 1998- “British Invasion”, Savannah, Georgia 1997- Royal National Eisteddfod, Bala 1997- R.C.A. The images I choose are very important in that they represent the felt emotion and often relate to my close environment. The paintings become conduits of feeling and impressions of personal and experienced dramas. There is an awareness and consciousness of place or an event. The location acts as a backdrop to memories and more immediate emotions and recent experiences. My work is not a report on the natural world or a direct representation of the viewed image. I plane and move objects and concentrate on the placement of the subjects. The control of light and colour is very important in my process of painting".
