Projects may be either an individual pursuit or that of a group. All projects must meet the criteria outlined on this assignment sheet and will be graded with the attached rubric. If you have any questions regarding these criteria – you should address them to me before you begin the work on your project. All projects must be accompanied by a typed, two page explanation. This document must be proofread and double spaced. Group Projects need to be approved by me; you and the members of your group need to submit in writing a proposal for your project that outlines when you will meet to work on it, whom will be responsible for what, as well as an agreement that each member will equally share a grade regardless of personal effort and participation. Unless I have approved your group project in writing, you DO NOT have my permission to pursue it. (I strongly encourage you to avoid group work for final projects as large as the Oedipus Unit.) Projects may include any of the options below. If you have an idea of your own, make sure you get my approval before beginning. -Slideshow/Presentation I will book an LCD projector for your use in class. You should be familiar with power point as a program so that your presentation can be creative and original, rather than a list of facts and short answers on a white screen. -Game This project should be complete with pieces, board, and well written directions of how to play. If your idea is to do a game that is not necessarily a board game, make sure it meets all the criteria on this assignment. -Movie A simple rendition of the play will not suffice. Be extra careful to incorporate the criteria mentioned on this assignment in your movie. Perhaps you will want to include a “critic’s take” on your movie that will allow you to analyze the play, or maybe you would want to do a modern day version of Oedipus that shows you fully understand the themes and concepts of the play and can connect them to current events. -Essay If you would rather just write an essay that explores the criteria mentioned in this assignment that is perfectly acceptable, the essay should be no shorter than 4 pages in length and include at least one direct quote from the play in each paragraph. -Sculpture/Artwork Posters are too middle school for sophomore year, so please do not try and submit one for your final project. However, if you are artistically inclined and would like to incorporate the criteria mentioned with one of the following mediums, I would be happy to discuss your idea with you: painting, sculpture, fabric, pottery, other. -Journal/Diary A series of entries written from one or more of the character’s point of view. These entries should catalogue the characters thoughts and feelings from the beginning of the play to the end; a minimum of 8 entries (no shorter than 2 paragraphs each) with decorated cover is required. -Other If you choose another idea, you must have it approved by me before beginning. Oedipus Rex Final Project You will meet the following criteria: -Identify the theme of the play and demonstrate how it is shown through the actions and speech of the characters. -Identify the main characters in the play and explain what characteristics (both positive and flawed) they possess. -Explore the metaphors that are used for blindness, darkness and lightness. -Analyze one main character to show how hubris is shown throughout the play. -Explore the major theme in the play and explore its consequences and definition in the context of your own life.
