Oedipus Writing Prompts
Select one of the following free-response essay prompts and write a multi-paragraph
essay in which you respond to all aspects of the prompt. Do not merely summarize
plot. Due Wednesday (2/12) at the beginning of class. Use your annotations!

Prompt #1
Hubris defined as excessive personal pride. As Oedipus is about to learn the
devastating truth of his origin and his destiny, the Chorus observes, “Audacity sires the
tyrant...” In a well-written essay, argue whether or not hubris the essential cause of
Oedipus’ downfall.

One of the chief elements of the Greek tragedy was the playwright’s use of the Chorus.
Write a well-organized essay in which you analyze the Chorus’s contribution to the plot
and meaning of Oedipus Rex.
