An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!
A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can, in as little
as 60 days. That's closed loop recycling at its finest!
If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year!
Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! Most of them are thrown away!
Americans throw away 25,000,000,000 Styrofoam coffee cups every year.
Mining and transporting raw materials for glass produces about 385 pounds of waste
for every ton of glass that is made. If recycled glass is substituted for half of the raw
materials, the waste is cut by more than 80%.
A typical family consumes 182 gallons of soda, 29 gallons of juice, 104 gallons of milk,
and 26 gallons of bottled water a year. That's a lot of containers -- make sure they're
recycled!
The following items can be recycled and items with a $ sign often pay!
PLASTIC
Check the triangle (usually found on the bottom of the item) Most local recycling plants will only
accept #1 and #2 plastics. #1 plastic includes soft drink and water bottles. #2 plastics include clear
milk and colored jugs. G&R Reclamation in Horse Cave can recycle all plastic bottles #1 through
#7. Food Lion, Kroger and Wal-Mart will accept plastic bags for recycling.
ALUMINUM
This includes soda / drink cans, siding, gutters, lawn furniture,
foil wrap, Hershey kisses candy wrappers, etc. Drain liquids. $$$
METAL
Any metal can be recycled! Rinse your tin and household cans. $
CARDBOARD
Corrugated boxes (those with distinct layers) should be broken down.
GLASS
Requirements: Rinse before discarding. Divide glass items by color – clear and brown/green
PAPER
Divide paper products before recycling as each category is processed differently!
Office Paper – white paper; Remove staples, paperclips and glued flaps
Newspaper – daily and Sunday papers as well as advertising inserts
Scrap Paper – colored paper, junk mail, envelopes with glassy (see-through) windows,
paper with slick (colored) surfaces
BATTERIES
Batteries Plus in Bowling Green will take all types of batteries, including car batteries, for recycling. Located at 1150

MAGAZINES
Magazines, catalogs, and phone books can be recycled. Go to
http://www.catalogchoice.org/ to stop receiving un-needed/un-wanted catalogs or to
sign up for e-mail versions. Alternatively, have the mailing label handy then call the
company’s 800 number, fax your instructions to the company (ATTN: customer
service), or tear off the mailing label, write your instructions on it, and enclose in the postage-paid ordering envelope.
POLYSTYRENE (#6) and POLYPROPYLENE (#5)
Dart Corporation in Horse Cave (270-786-2183 or 786-4760) will now recycle all Styrofoam
cups/plates, etc. as well as all “plastic” picnic items (spoons, forks, knives, plates, cups). Items do
not need to be separated. Rinse and/or clean of all food particles. Call before going to be certain
someone is available to accept your recyclables.

ELECTRONICS
This includes computer components, cell phones, PDA’s, GPS units, etc. $ from some recycling
centers. Fee usually charged for monitors and TV’s. Note: Glasgow now has a yearly electronic
recycling event. Many area shelters will recycle old cell phones for emergency use by patrons.
EYEGLASSES
Old eyeglasses (lens and/or frames) can be reused. Donate to the Lions Clubs and/or most
optometrists offices. Items will be sent to third-world countries and/or given to those unable
to afford glasses.
WOODEN PALLETS
Take to G&R Reclamation in Horse Cave. $$$
Where to recycle
You can drop off your recyclables at the Cave City Fire Station on Tuesdays from ?? and in Glasgow
at the Southgate Plaza on Saturdays from 9 am to 3 pm.
