Abstract Title of Presentation: The Veterinary Hospice Care Technician: An Emerging Specialty© Biographical Sketch for Ann McClenaghan, BS, CVT Ann P. McClenaghan is a certified veterinary technician with over 20 years experience working in small animal practice. She has an Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology from Harcum College. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Philadelphia University, Ann holds a certificate in Animal Assisted Therapy and Education. She was an instructor for seven years at Manor College in the Veterinary Technology Program and also served as the program’s Education Coordinator. She is a member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) and the Pennsylvania Veterinary Technicians Association. Today, Ann continues to teach others by presenting educational workshops for fellow veterinary technicians, staff and pet owners. Her professional interests include veterinary palliative and hospice care, grief support and animal nature assisted therapy. Ann also offers consulting in all of these areas. In addition to her role as a volunteer in the Animal Assisted Therapy Program at Abington Memorial Hospital, a large suburban Philadelphia hospital, Ann is a Tester/Observer for Therapy Dogs Incorporated. She shares her life with her husband Charlie and is a pet parent to one cat and two dogs. Veterinary hospice care is an emerging specialty for veterinary technicians. This presentation will give technicians an overview of pet hospice care and the important role that technicians play in the success of the veterinary hospice care team. Discussion will include the duties and skills involved when providing pet hospice nursing care, enhancing those skills and how to be instrumental in promoting the veterinary hospice care concept in their clinic. For technicians who are currently doing pet hospice nursing, information about the most current trends in pet hospice care will be presented.
