CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE:
CREW WORKER
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to work as part of a public works crew performing routine maintenance and
construction tasks for roads, drainage, and other public works projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific duties and responsibilities does not
exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
Performs general street maintenance tasks; repairs sidewalks, potholes, utility cuts, and driveways; levels gravel and
asphalt; mixes, pours and cuts concrete; installs street signs and posts; places barricades at various locations; directs
traffic; removes road debris and cleans up after vehicular accidents; repairs guard rails and mixes paint for signs and
road work.
Cleans out stormwater drainage ditches; remove beaver dams and other obstructions; removes debris, trash and
excess dirt as needed; picks up trash, leafs, and tree limbs from wooded areas and from the sides of the road.
Mows rights-of-way, parks, grounds, and other public areas using commercial push or riding mowers; trims along
edges and other areas as necessary; prunes bushes and shrubs; and performs routine grounds maintenance tasks. Assists
with maintenance of parks and athletic fields as necessary.
Performs general maintenance and cleaning; changes light bulbs; paints structures and equipment; picks up trash and
debris in and around buildings and grounds; empties trash containers and receptacles; removes and disposes of trash
according to city policy.
Performs manual labor as directed to load, unload, and move materials for various projects; assists with set-up and
take-down of tables, chairs, and other equipment for meetings and events; assists with the stores equipment, supplies,
and other materials.
Participates in other departmental projects and activities as directed; performs basic and semi-skilled labor as
appropriate to assist in completion of maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects for assigned department;
assists operators in the performance of their duties; picks up paper, limbs, and other debris; uses hand tools and
motorized tools as necessary to complete assigned task; and manually loads, moves, and arranges materials.
Operates city-owned machinery to include pick-up truck, mowers, compactor, tamp, asphalt hopper, drill press,
pressure cleaner, jack hammer, chainsaw, concrete saw, and other gas, electric and power tools/equipment in the daily
performance of duties; adheres to all local, state and federal safety regulations. Maintains, washes, and greases
equipment.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to
coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; previous experience in contruction, maintenance, or a related field preferred; or any
equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and
abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license to operate County vehicles.

characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.

established policies, procedures and standards.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control
the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic
form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of
action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving
a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work,
typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and
that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50
pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or
signals.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental
conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes,
machinery, vibrations, and traffic hazards.
