General Description (Purpose and Function) :

This position is primarily responsible for assisting the Physician and Optometrist by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s visual field, and maintaining an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient, quality eye care. The individual in this position will provide diagnostic ophthalmic test/assessment procedures to ensure quality care to the patients and support for the Physicians by providing medical treatment and medical care services.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (For Non-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort) :

 Determines the optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with the lensometer or autolensometer

 Performs the following test procedures on patients of all ages, including children and the elderly: o Confrontation fields o Goldmann visual fields o Humphrey visual fields o Amsler grid o Insertion and removal of hard and soft contact lenses o Administration of eye drops o Keratometry: standard and auto o Auto refraction o Specialized visual fields performed for the ocular studies o Tonometry: Goldmann and tonopen

 Measures the visual acuity, at distance and near with the: o Projector chart o E-card o Hand motion techniques, including directionality o Light perception with and without projection o Pinhole visual acuity o Near point card

 Monitors and maintains the levels of minor equipment

 Educates patients on testing procedure

 Performs vital signs on patients having laser procedures or when directed by the Physician

 Monitors the progress and facilitates the testing of patients undergoing diagnostic testing and/or consultations in other areas/departments

 Serves as a liaison between physicians and patients, as well as within other departments

 Makes suggestions to Physicians and/or Practice Managers regarding possible improvements in the practice

 Handles medical emergencies, adhering to hospital policy, in a timely and competent manner, always putting the patient’s safety and well-being first

 Performs other duties as assigned

Education Requirements (Essential Requirements) :

 High School diploma or equivalent

Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements) :

 One year of relevant work experience in a medical setting
