High School Lab Report Name ________________________________________ Date ____________ Period _______ Complete this portion BEFORE beginning the lab LAB TITLE: _____Experimental Design Using UV Beads__________ INTRDUCTION: What are some, topics, models, and observations that we have talked about in class relevant to the lab being conducted? Scientists and researchers go through a logical process known as the scientific method to study the world around them. Research is guided by observations and prior research on the topic and used to create a testable hypothesis consisting of a manipulated variable and responding variable. In order to make proper comparisons, the researcher must have a control group by which to compare the experimental group to. The experimental group/s is the group/s in which one variable has been manipulated. This activity explores the behavior of UV sensitive beads and investigates the effectiveness of different various. UV Beads are a type of sensor that detects ultraviolet light given off from the sun. When UV beads are exposed to sunlight, they react by changing colors. UV beads can do this because they contain certain pigments that change color when exposed to sunlight or other forms of ultraviolet radiation. Exposure to UV radiation is harmful to skin cells and can cause cancer. Sunscreens contain substances that absorb UV radiation and provide protection against harmful UV rays. The SPF or Sun Protection Factor measures how much protection the sunscreen has. PUPRPOSE: (What are you supposed to learn from this lab?)___We will be exposing the beads to UV radiation to test the effectiveness of different UV barriers.____ HYPOTHESIS (testable): If we apply the _____________________ (your manipulate) to UV sensitive beads, then the beads will _____________when exposed to ultra violet light. PROCEDURE: Describe the steps you will use in this lab to test your hypothesis (complete the experiment)? Control Procedures: 1. Label 3 petri dishes as your control. 2. Place 5 beads into the controlled petri dishes. 3. Place petri dishes in the sunlight and record any changes. Experimental Procedures: 1.____________________________________________________________________________________ 2. .____________________________________________________________________________________ 3. .____________________________________________________________________________________ 4. .____________________________________________________________________________________ 5. .____________________________________________________________________________________ Complete this section DURING the lab. RESULTS: Record your data from the lab here including data tables, graphs, drawings, and calculations. The data table may already be provided in your lab book, copy it here. Control Group Beads color before exposure Bead color after exposure Experimental Group 1 Beads color before exposure Bead color after exposure Experimental Group 2 Beads color before exposure Graph Bead color after exposure Title: _______________________________ Time (minutes) Control Exp.1 Exp.2 CONCLUSION: This is where you explain the results of your experiment. You will want to use the data you collected during the lab as well as your class notes and textbook. CLAIM EVIDENCE REASONING A one sentence statement of what is found to be supported based on the lab experiment. A description of the evidence, and data, obtained from this lab that support the claim. Do not explain WHY the evidence supports the claim. An explanation of WHY the evidence supports the stated claim. What scientific principles are illustrated or proven by this experiment? In the space below, revisit and restate your hypothesis. My hypothesis ________________ __________________ was _______________ (supported/ not supported) by the data. In the space below, make a bulleted list of all data, facts and evidence collected in this experiment. Write about the data. In the control group the beads turned __________ after ________ minutes. In experimental group A the beads turned ___________ after _________ minutes. In experimental group B the beads turned ___________ after _____________ mintues. In the space below, explain WHY or HOW the evidence supports the claim. What scientific ideas have been studied in class that relate to your observations during the lab? Use the introduction of your report to help you through the reasoning. UV beads have a pigment that change color when exposed to UV light. The evidence indicates that (restate evidence)____________ _____________________________________ _______ and therefore supports (restate the claim)________________________________ _______________________ . Written Conclusion Paragraph – DRAFT TEMPLATE In these experiments, it was found that ______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________. The data and evidence from the experiments that support this claim are ______________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________. The reason the evidence supports this claim is_______________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________. The reasoning section makes a clear and logical connection between the claim and the evidence. 3 The claim provided is concise and is reasonably supported by several pieces of evidence from the laboratory activity and other texts (notes). The reasoning section makes a connection between the claim and the evidence. 2 The claim is provided and is supported by 1-2 pieces of evidence from the laboratory activity and other texts (notes). The reasoning section makes little or no connection between the claim and the evidence. 1 The information provided includes some evidence from the laboratory activity. 1 or more sections are incomplete or missing 0 No lab report turned in Comments: OR No evidence is provided
