9th GRADE CIVICS ELECTION PROJECT (250 pts.)
This project can be very FUN and INTERESTING but time and effort will be required on your part.
Organization and working together is a key. Your job is to campaign for those candidates
(President/Vice President, Minnesota National Senate, Minnesota National House, Minnesota State
House.)
A. We will divide you into political parties. (Democratic, Republican)
1. Each group must elect a campaign chairperson and treasurer.
a. Chairperson’s job is to make sure campaign runs smoothly and has final say in
campaign decisions and strategies. (Remember Mr. Christian has final say!)
b. Treasurer is responsible for getting campaign materials. (Not making them) Each
poster must include Treasurer’s name.
2. Each party must figure out which candidates are running for their party.
3. Each group is responsible for breaking down into sub-groups. There must be a sub-
group for each candidate listed above.

B. Each party is responsible for turning in a 1 page typed party strategy paper. (How are you
going to go about getting your candidates elected. Here are some things you may include:
a. Negative/Positive campaign
b. Issues you’ll talk about
c. How will you go about winning the election

C. Each group is responsible for turning in a 1 page typed biography paper on each
candidate. (5 total papers.) Some things you may want to include.
a. Where was candidate born
b. How did he/she develop throughout life.
c. How did the candidates political career evolve.

D. Campaign Commercial (5 pts. per commercial, 40 pts. total, Due: _______________)
1. Each sub-group is responsible for making two taped campaign commercial for each
candidate. (8 commercials per tape.)
a. Each person in the sub-group must be involved in the commercial.
E. Campaign Advertisements (all poster must be up by Oct 31. 50 pts.)
1. Each sub-group is responsible for hanging posters throughout the school and possible
throughout the town to get their candidate elected. You may be able to hang them in other
teachers rooms and in the halls. (Make sure you ask.)
a. Posters must be approved by Mr. Christian
b. Signed forms showing where you are hanging the posters must also be filled out.
c. Generally the more you get your candidates name out there the better.
F. Each student will participate in the Greenbush-Middle River mock election on _______________.

G. Each person will type a 1 page paper on how they felt the mock campaign went. If their
group was to do anything over what would they do. What do you feel your group did well.

This project can be vary FUN and INTERESTING but time and effort will be required on your part.
Organization and working together is a key. The objective of this project is to learn how candidates are selected, how to run an election, organize a debate, and participate in a debate.
A. We will divide you into political parties. (10 pts.)
1. Each group must elected a campaign chairperson, treasurer, presidential, and vice-presidential
candidate.
a. Chairperson’s job is to make sure campaign runs smoothly and has final say in
campaign decisions and strategies. (Remember Mr. Christian has final say!)
