SUBJECT: STAGE 6 – PRELIMINARY - INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY WOOD UNIT TITLE: BBQ TABLE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION CLASS: YEAR 12 LESSON TITLE: PRODUCT TESTING PERIOD: 3 LENGTH: 50 MINS OUTCOMES: SYLLABUS OUTCOMES: DATE: 6/4/13 INTERACTIVE TEACHING STRATEGY: H4.1 demonstrates competency in a range of practical skills appropriate to the major project H6.1 evaluates the characteristics of quality manufactured products TEACHER’S PREPARATION: LESSON PREPARATION: List personal tasks to be completed prior to the lesson to ensure success. For example: Teacher to bring an example of wood stuck together using different types of glues Organise testing table and weights for students to test Arrange tables to facilitate the testing of the wood Bring writing materials for brainstorming. Bring additional materials for demonstration. RESOURCES: ELECTRONIC (SOFTWARE/HARDWARE) TRADITIONAL (BOOKS/PAPER/AUDIOVISUAL) OTHER (PEOPLE/PLACES/THINGS) Software titles Books (include page numbers) People Hardware items Journal / Magazine Articles Places Web Addresses (URL) Audio-Visual Kits Things Other Other Pieces of wood glued together for testing. Weights used to put loads onto the different test pieces. Construction grade glue in its packaging with directions and safety warnings LESSON PROCEDURE: LESSON INTRODUCTION CONTENT Student learns to identify the characteristics of quality manufactured products TOTAL MIN - 10 TIME 2 mins TEACHER ACTIONS STUDENT ACTIONS RESOURCES Welcome and roll call: Greet students upon arrival to class and wait for class to settle. Mark class roll. Enter classroom in an orderly fashion and take a seat Respond when teacher calls their name out Previous lesson summary: 4 mins Ask students to quickly summarise what happened in previous lesson as a group. Again, reinforce the project outline delivered in previous lessons (characteristics of a glue adhesive) Todays Intro & Engage thinking: 4 mins Introduce todays lesson by writing the task that will be addressed throughout the course of the lesson on the whiteboard Engage students thinking by asking two close-ended questions and then finishing with an open-ended question. The question should be directed at the glues/adhesives Listen to teachers task and respond Discuss as a class previous lesson and discuss different types of wood glues Students may ask questions that relate to the previous lesson – aspect that they may have found confusing. Students listen to the question presented by teacher and share with the class any interesting news they have learnt since previous lesson Summary notes LESSON PROCEDURE: LESSON BODY TOTAL MIN 30 CONTENT Student learns to identify the characteristics of quality manufactured products TIME 3 mins TEACHER ACTIONS 13 mins Explain to students that they will be testing different types of glue adhesion with wood in respect to weather exposure. Conduct a class discussion regarding different aspects of the weather that may contribute to glue adhesive failing. Direct learning towards o Rain - water o Sun - heat 4 different types of wood work glues will be handed out, students to check the labelling and safety requirements: o PVA o Polyurethane Glue o Super Glue o Epoxy Students are to take scrap timber from the recycling bin and in groups use the different types of glue to join the timber. Once glue has dried, students may commence testing. Testing will involve students running water of the different glue points and using the heat guns to test which glues can withstand heat Teacher will ask students which test piece will perform the best Students will be required to record their findings in their workbooks and share their results at the end of the activity. STUDENT ACTIONS RESOURCES Students check the packaging and make notes on the directions and safety warnings Wood glued together using the different glues. Students monitor and participate in the testing of the glue Construction grade glue with directions and safety warnings Students will discuss what the results mean and why they think certain glues were waterproof and why some could withstand heat. PPE LESSON PROCEDURE: LESSON BODY CONTENT Student learns to identify the characteristics of quality manufactured products TIME 9 mins TEACHER ACTIONS 5 Min Teacher breaks students into 4 different groups to examine and analyse the one test piece each and why the results differed and what also could have contributed. Guided response: o Humidity o Temperature where wood was left to dry o Dry times for each glue differs Students will be required to come back and share their responses and what they have found and collaborate with their peers. Teacher discusses what they have found and how it relates to their project? Which glue would be suitable for the construction of the BBQ table. Instruct students to clean and tidy room, placing equipment back where it belongs and place all rubbish in the bins. STUDENT ACTIONS Students break into groups to analyse their given test object Students to identify how glue bond test relates to their projects. RESOURCES LESSON PROCEDURE: LESSON CLOSURE CONTENT Student learns to identify the characteristics of quality manufactured products TOTAL MIN 10 TIME 7 mins 3 MINS FOLLOW UP: TEACHER ACTIONS Summary sheet: Hand out summary sheet to students Ask students to read and highlight key words and points from summary sheet. Ask class to discuss summary sheet and key points. Advise students to keep the summary sheet in their workbooks. The aim of this activity is to summarise the key information from the lesson and ensures the teacher students understood the content present in todays lesson. Goodbye: Ask the students if there are any questions regarding todays lesson Finish the closure of the lesson by saying goodbye to the students and allow them to leave the classroom. Compile materials for testing Make sue wood workshop is free and available for testing Make sure testing and evaluation criteria is printed and available for students STUDENT ACTIONS Students receive summary sheet Students listen to teachers instructions on what to do with summary sheet Students revise summary sheet and highlight key points Students discuss as a class the vital information from the lesson Students store the summary sheet in work sheet for later reference. Students respond to teachers question regarding the assignment and today’s lesson Students say goodbye to teacher and leave the classroom safely RESOURCES Graphic organiser
