Abstract Repeat Series: Wave & Loop
North Gallery
May 5 – 26, 2007
Opening, May 5
Artist Present, 2 - 5pm
A.R. Wave #84, 2006, acrylic on board, 24 x 24 inches

We are pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings by Angela Leach, to be presented by
Wynick/Tuck Gallery, opening Saturday May 5, 2007. The artist will be present from 2 to 5 pm.
When Leach came to the realization that the focus of her attentions would be directed toward geometric
abstraction, she developed an inclination for setting limitations and writing copious notes. Leach works in
a scale that is proportionate to the size of the painting surface. She mixed and named 32 colours that
she has been committed to for nearly ten years.
As she continues with this series, while evolving from the visual content of the previous work, Leach has
emphasized the illusion of depth and movement to create an imaginary space, or in some cases, the
imaginary animation of an abstract object.
Leach says about her work; “The implementation of conditions, brought forth through grid design, chosen
colour group and order, is essential to the aesthetic quality of the painting. The act of painting serves to
fulfill the terms of planning; a function that is purely mechanical, thus forming the aesthetic for the
Abstract Repeat series of paintings.”
Leach has participated in group and solo exhibitions, at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Power Plant,
Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, and Edmonton Art Gallery. Gordon Hatt, director at the time of the
Cambridge Galleries, organized a major exhibition of her work, which traveled nationally to public
galleries. Leach had two major paintings selected by the curators for the 2005, important international
exhibition, Extreme Abstraction, at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo.
Sara Angelucci
Double Take
Project Room
As part of the Contact Festival
May 5 – 26, 2007
Opening, May 5
Artist Present, 2 - 5pm
Double Take, (Video Still), 2007
For Angelucci’s presentation for the Contact Festival, Katy McCormick writes in the catalogue: Sara
Angelucci’s Double Take follows the narrative of identical twin sisters recounting their traumatic
witnessing (at the age of five) of a family member’s death. The single- channel video appears similar to a
stereographic image: a woman, simply dressed with her brown hair pulled back, sits before a burgundy
background, seemingly mirrored in two frames. One twin begins her monologue, joined by the other
moments later. Peppered with “I remember,” and “I don’t remember,” they weave a dual narrative of
shared memories punctuated by differing recollections.
Fuelled by Angelucci’s familial history, Double Take is situated firmly within her photographic oeuvre of
the last 10 years. Unlike her Wallet project (Everything in my Father’s Wallet/ Everything in my Wallet,
2005), where she rephotographed archival material, Double Take is an edited re-enactment based on the
sisters’ stories, and is brought to life by professional actors. In her 2002 photo and video installation
Questions She’ll Never Answer, Angelucci dons a replica of the dress her mother wore aboard ship on
her immigrant voyage to Canada ; a video loop animates the photograph. In Double Take the artist takes
greater liberties with the past, commenting both on the specifics of individual histories and on the nature
of memory itself. Apparently, even indelible memories can have more than one face.
Angelucci has exhibited widely across Canada including exhibitions at Le Mois de la Photo in Montreal,
1997 and solo shows at Ace Art in Winnipeg, the Toronto Photographer's Workshop and the MacDonald
Stewart Art Centre. Angelucci's videos have been screened across Canada and included in festivals in
Europe and Hong Kong. Her most recent exhibitions include, Everything in My Father’s Wallet /Everything
in My Wallet at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Somewhere In Between at the Cambridge Galleries,
Cambridge, Ontario.
