ORYA Basketball - Ages 3 through 4th Grade Program Information Guide
Program Goals and Descriptions
Ages 3-6
Introduction to basic concepts of playing basketball – dribbling with fingertips and both hands, moving the ball
in all directions while dribbling, bounce passing and receiving, two handed shooting at various basket heights.
It is important that every child has a ball and is not waiting in line for long periods of time. Skills should be
taught through fun games such as follow the leader, simon says, red light green light, monkey in the middle, etc.
Introduction of defense and offense concepts, rules such as traveling and double dribble are appropriate later in
the season. Small one on one or two on two games could be introduced later in the season but full scrimmages
should not be introduced at this age. The emphasis is on building knowledge, skills and most importantly
having fun.
Grades 1-2
Progression from introduction to refinement of skills, knowledge, offense and defense and learning how to play
in a game. Limited introduction/refresher to basic concepts of playing basketball – dribbling with fingertips and
both hands, moving the ball in all directions while dribbling, bounce/chest passing and receiving, two handed
shooting at various basket heights, rebounding, and offense and defense positioning. Skills should be taught
through fun games such as follow the leader, simon says, red light green light, monkey in the middle, etc.
Sessions should be split between skill development/refinement and scrimmages at 8 ft rim heights. Scrimmages
should introduce players to rules such as double dribble and traveling, court boundaries, offense and defense
roles and positions, court spacing and team vs. individual performance. For defense – no stealing or pressing is
permitted however players are encouraged to grab loose balls and rebounds. Emphasis is on skill building, team
and game concepts, building confidence and having fun.
Sample Drills/Games
Dribbling – relay races, obstacle course using cones, red light green light, simon says, traffic cop (point in
various directions for them to dribble in encouraging them to dribble with head up).
Passing – partner passing, relay passing down the line and back, monkey in the middle, give and go passing,
passing against the wall
