Rocks and Minerals Unit Review Unit Objectives: Students will learn the difference between a mineral and a rock and how minerals make rocks. Students will learn the importance of minerals and rocks in their everyday life. Students will learn to identify minerals and rocks based on their common characteristics. Students will understand the rock cycle and the processes involved in the rock cycle. Students will learn to evaluate their collected data as compared to known or given data. Unit Vocabulary: basaltic crystal granitic luster nonfoliated sediments cementation extrusive igneous rocks magma rock streak cleavage foliated intrusive metamorphic rocks rock cycle compaction fracture lava mineral sedimentary rocks Concepts to know for the unit assessment: Be able to identify the 13 rocks that we worked with in class. Know the differences between metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks. Know how to move about in the rock cycle. Know the basics of Moh’s harness scale. Know the different properties used to identify minerals. Know the basic composition of the Earth’s crust. What to study for the unit assessment? The two biggest things to study are the notes and the readings. Pay special attention to the chapter reviews. Also look over any labs and activities that we have done. I try to pull questions from them as well. Do not forget to study for the rock identification part of the test. You will need to identify the 13 rocks that you used during the rock lab.
