Background Structure Workshop Manager Foreman Fitter About the Role Purpose This role provides specialist technical services to Transport Management Group. This includes the servicing and repair of NI Water vehicles and mobile plant. In addition, the role includes the servicing and repair of vehicles and mobile plant belonging to various Government agencies e.g. Roads Service. Importance Transport Management Group is fundamental to NIW’s operational capabilities. TMG provides NIW with a cost effective fleet of vans, lorries, tankers, tractors and mobile plant etc. The fleet is used in the treatment and distribution of potable water to domestic and commercial premises and for the treatment of waste water. The fleet is located in various hubs throughout Northern Ireland and also at private addresses. This fleet distribution is essential to NIW to ensure that the company meets with all its compliance targets and with its customer expectations. Page 1 of 4 Vehicle & Mobile Plant Mechanic NIWL 327/10/2011 Key Activities – Duties & Responsibilities: Assessing mechanical issues Identifying, advising & carrying out the most appropriate mechanical repairs to vehicles and mobile plant. Assessing bodywork issues Identifying, advising & carrying out the most appropriate bodywork repairs to vehicles and mobile plant. Complete necessary paper work Ensure that all work is coded correctly and that all hours used and parts fitted are recorded. Ordering of parts Ensure that all appropriate parts required for each job are clearly identified to enable ordering on a timely basis to minimise downtime. Carrying out a range of mechanical duties including but not limited to: Maintaining and repairing vehicles and plant Checking steering, ignition, brakes, lights, oil, tyres, etc. Diagnosing and repairing electrical and electronic faults Changing engine oil and filters Fitting brake components Fitting exhaust systems Fitting clutches Overhauling engines Testing vehicles and diagnosing faults Measuring vehicle performance by using specialised equipment Preparing vehicles for GVC / MOT tests Providing estimates for the cost of work which needs to be done Participate in standby and callout duties to provide an emergency service for the vehicles and plant maintained by the Transport Management Group with emphasis on winter gritting activities carried out by Roads Service. Computer use Use a computer terminal for the input of basic data (training will be provided). Page 2 of 4 Vehicle & Mobile Plant Mechanic NIWL 327/10/2011 Essential Criteria Applicants MUST be able to demonstrate in their application form and where necessary at interview: Time served mechanic 3 of the last 5 years spent in a similar working environment carrying out similar duties. Full current and clean driving licence Desirable Criteria A licence for HGV vehicles. At least 6 months computer data input experience. Applications will also be considered from applicants with relevant formal qualifications considered by the selection panel to be of an equivalent or higher standard to those stated above. Key Skills Technical Knowledge Knowledge of current engine, braking, steering and suspension systems. Fundamental knowledge of vehicle electrics. Organisational skills Clear diagnostic and analytical skills in order to establish the most appropriate solution to mechanical problems. An understanding of vehicle electrics in order to carry out diagnoses and carry out repairs where possible. Effectively manage the workload ensuring minimal downtime.
