ROLLING THUNDER STUDIOS GOES FOR GENELEC 5.1 MONITORING
— Genelec 8240A monitors and a 7270A subwoofer give this Midwestern music recording,
post production and mastering facility the most precise monitoring possible —
NATICK, MA, October 14, 2010 — At a time when independent music production has become
intensely localized, regional recording studios have taken on a greater role in the evolution of
the music industry. Rolling Thunder Studios in Traverse City, Michigan, understands that – it’s
the creative and production home for numerous local artists for everything from their demos to
their LPs and their mastering needs. And now Rolling Thunder’s clients will experience a new
dimension to their music thanks to the recently installed 5.1 monitoring system from Genelec,
the world leader in active monitoring technology.
For its new year-old facility, studio Owner Nick Vasquez has installed five Genelec 8240A BiAmplfied DSP Monitors and a 7270A Active DSP Subwoofer, purchased from dealer
Sweetwater®. The L-C-R array is mounted atop the control room’s new Avid Icon D-Command
console, and the rear surround monitors are wall mounted.
“These are great-sounding monitors,” exclaims Vasquez, who founded Rolling Thunder
Studios 17 years ago and nurtured its expansion into new areas such as audio post production
and scoring – Rolling Thunder recorded some of the score to director Michael Moore’s
documentary Capitalism: A Love Story. “I traveled to Sweetwater, where my salesman Brian

VanDeKeere and I listened to a lot of monitors, and the Genelecs just sounded better than any
of them to me,” he says, adding that as he researched his studio’s move into 5.1 surround
monitoring for the first time, he discovered that Genelec monitors consistently came up rated
number-one. “They are the most versatile, in terms of being able to handle all kinds of music,
as well as the most precise and with the most clarity, especially in the midrange. They are
fantastic monitors and I’m glad to have them in my studio.”
About the 8240A and 7270A
The Genelec 8240A Bi-Amplified DSP Monitoring System is ideal in applications where a wide
frequency response is needed but space is limited. The 8240A builds on the rock-solid
technology of the highly-acclaimed 8040A, featuring an ingenious, flow optimized, reflex port
that provides solid, clear and articulated low frequencies without compression, distortion or
port noises. Combined with the advanced Genelec Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™)
and the rounded edges and gently curved front and sides of the MDE ™ (Minimum Diffraction
Enclosure™) enclosure, the result is an astoundingly flat frequency response both on and off
axis. Other benefits include superb imaging precision and minimum listening fatigue. The
Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM™) control network and software enhances further the
performance of the 8240A: it features adjustment of levels, distance delays and flexible room
response improvement equalization with the reliable and robust AutoCal™ automated
calibration system via the GLM™ control network. The 8240A has both analog and AES digital
inputs in combination with a digital thru connection.
The Genelec 7270A Active DSP Subwoofer brings the flexibility and accuracy of room
response equalization to an entirely new level. This powerful and precise low frequency
monitoring solution is designed for modern 6.1 or 5.1 multi-channel systems as well as
traditional stereo applications. With its 19 Hz lower cut-off frequency, high sound pressure
output capability and versatile digital bass management system, the 7270A adapts to all low
frequency monitoring situations.
