September 16, 2015 -DraftCOMMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TEAM MAJOR RECOMMENDATIONS DISCUSSED AT SEPTEMBER 15, 2015 MEETING Note: The recommendations below reflect the discussion and agree-to modifications made by the CET members at the September 15th meeting. Provide literacy and math tutors for the after-school extended day period, or during the enrichment periods, supervised by the District (Education Plan: iii. to increase learning time by extending the school day and/or year. Provide instruction to the school staff to institute regular moments of quiet time throughout the school day for all students (Education Plan: v. academic, social‐emotional, and student support) During 2015-16, explore the concept of instituting a full-service Community School model at HMS, including wrap-around services (in health; mental health etc) to families as well as students; and paid positions for parents and others to assist both students and their families.(v. academic, social‐emotional, and student support Survey students, parents and staff regarding what students need to be successfully academically, and in terms of school climate and culture.( vi. school climate and other components.) Expand School-wide strategies to increase cultural understanding among students, faculty and staff Strategies will include on-going professional development for faculty and staff. ( vi. school climate.) Develop programs and school-wide strategies for students that promote character development and positive valuesincluding PBIS and Second Step. ( vi. school climate.) Hire additional hall monitors. Provide professional development for hall monitors and other staff regarding therapeutic restraint training and de-escalation techniques. Assist parents of ENL students by translating important school documents, notifications, etc. through hard copy, electronic means (e.g. SNN, PowerSchool) , and exploring ways to provide information orally (e.g. interpreters at school functions; phone apps).
