Pediatric Endocrinology Division
Introduction
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology in the Department of Pediatrics was developed by Dr P.S.N. Menon. The Pediatric
Endocrinology Clinic was started by him in 1981 along with two senior residents and junior residents from the Pediatric
Unit 2 with active support from the senior faculty from the Department of Endocrinology.
Neonatal thyroid screening was started as a pilot project in 1984. Facility for prenatal diagnosis of Congenital Adrenal
Hyperplasia was developed in 1998. The Pediatric endocrine clinic at AIIMS was the first in India to start Growth Hormone
therapy for children with short stature due to Growth Hormone deficiency and Turner syndrome. Gonadotropin releasing
hormone therapy for precocious puberty was started for the first time in India in 1984. Many publications have been made
about GH and GnRH analogue therapy by the division.
Many national and international conferences, training workshops and seminars have been organized by Dr Menon for
educating the postgraduates and pediatricians in this subspecialty. From 1990 onwards many pediatricians have received
short and long term training in Pediatric Endocrinology under WHO, Indian Academy of Pediatrics and AIIMS sponsored
programs.

Presently the Clinic is being conducted by Dr Vandana Jain, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics along with two senior and
one junior resident doctors. The monthly census is around 120 follow-up and 25 new cases.
The predominant conditions being seen and treated are Type I Diabetes Mellitus, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, short
stature, precocious puberty, delayed puberty, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hypoparathyroidism,
pseudohypoparathyroidism, diabetes mellitus and intersex disorders.
