We say good-bye to November and its many highlights and memories to welcome December, and with it the final weeks of school before Christmas break. The pace shows no sign of letting up anytime soon, as students and staff continue to to work hard and enjoy an amazing variety of learning experiences each and every day. Activity outside is also constant, with a variety of snow structures taking shape on the schoolgrounds. The most popular recreational items these days are snow shovels! Visitors to our school are always amazed at how busy the students keep themselves W regardless of the weather conditions. Of course, as we all know, that’s just the a way we roll at Nukko! r HAPPENINGS AROUND THE SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT This year’s Christmas Concert is being held Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 1:00 pm. Our theme this year is “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” Students have been working hard learning and practicing their concert numbers and are really looking forward to performing. It promises to be a great show! Fax: 250-967-4307 n i n g b e l l 8 : 2 5 R SQUARE DANCING TO THE STARS e Last week our students explored the stars and learned the finer points of c square dancing as we welcomed the HR McMillan Planetarium Starlab along with e Professor Banjo, Paul Sivleria. Students in all divisions were thrilled withs the breathtaking views of our universe, and full of smiles as they do-si-doedsin the gym to toe-tapping fiddle and banjo music. Judging from the great response 1 they received, Starlab and Paul Silveria will have Nukko Lake on their return 0 visit lists. - 1 0 SILENT AUCTION The gym was buzzing with activity last Friday evening, November 20, as : 1 students, parents, and staff bid on an amazing variety of donated items. 5 Children and adults alike took part in the spirited and good-natured bidding and L enjoyed a variety of tasty treats from the concession. A new addition tou the event, the cakewalk, was extremely popular. Over $3000 was raised, andn a c wonderful time was had by all. Nukko students and staff donated 194 items in exchange for some tasty baked treats. All proceeds will go towards the Salvation Army Christmas Food Drive. Thank you, Mrs. Sutherland and Student Leadership for all of your hard work organizing and sponsoring this very worthwhile event! FROM THE OFFICE WINTER PROTECTION With the recent drop in temperatures, we would like to remind again to please ensure your child has snow pants, gloves, toques etc. to keep them safe and warm throughout the winter season. And, if possible, chapstick for those dry sore lips that often crack in cold weather. STRONG START Strong Start, an early learning program for 0-5 year olds, is once again under way under the guidance of Mrs. Dewane. If you are not yet registered, and wish your child to participate in this program, please contact the school. Important note: Strong Start hours have changed – the program will now run from 8:30 -11:30 am every Wednesday morning. VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL We are delighted to have you at school. If you are visiting or volunteering in the school, please come to the office first and sign in. If you would like to visit your child’s classroom please make an appointment with the classroom teacher. As well, please contact us in advance to arrange an appointment if you have an issue you would like to discuss. This will ensure we can put aside sufficient time for a discussion. STUDENT ABSENTEES Please call the school at 967-4314 if your child will be absent or late for any reason. We will attempt to contact families whenever there are unknown absences. There is a school answering machine available, so please feel free to call and leave a message. CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS… … must be done by all volunteers interacting with any children in the school or on school field trips. The office has forms to be picked up and taken down to the RCMP Detachment to be processed. If you are not sure if yours is current please stop in at the office to see Mrs. Matthews and she can check for you. BUS & AFTER SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS NOTES If you need your child to go home on another bus or if someone is coming to pick him/her up at school, please ensure you send a written note with your child to the office, or an email to mmatthews@sd57.bc.ca. A confirmation of email received will be sent back to you. The earlier the office receives these changes of plans the better we can ensure your child gets where he/she needs to go. If there is no note from you, the parent, we will send the child home on his/her regular bus. If you are dropping children off at the school, please do so after 8:00am when outside supervision begins. This ensures we are there to look out for their safety. If you are picking up your child after school, please meet them at the pencils. Please remind your child to follow the bus rules for the safety of all. Thank you! PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL Nukko Lake is very blessed to have a vibrant and involved PAC! Meetings are held at the school the first Friday of the month. All parents welcome! Popcorn was available for purchase today at 50 cents a bag. If you wish to send $5 with your child they can buy a punch card to be used over the coming months. Popcorn is available every two weeks during lunch hour. *** Thank you to Subaru for donating the popcorn *** On December 11th the PAC will be doing a hot lunch in exchange for non-perishables to be donated to St. Vincent de Paul. They will also be hosting a gingerbread cookie-decorating event. Next PAC meeting: Thursday December 3, 2015. COMMUNITY EVENTS AND WORKSHOPS BASKETBALL … MOST MONDAYS! Come and play basketball in the Nukko Lake School Gym starting October 19th, and continuing every Monday from 6:30 – 7:45PM for both boys & girls. This program requires parent participation. Springwood Elementary Time Capsule Opening and Reunion December 6 There will be an open house to view the contents of the 1999-2000 time capsule, slated to be opened in 2015. All students, families, and staff from that year are invited to come view and take their submissions from the capsule. We also are inviting all others who were part of the Springwood community, at any time, to attend, catch up and be part of the event.
