5th Grade 3rd Six Weeks Lesson 01: Changes over Time (11 days) Students will engage in activities and learning that shows how the flow of rivers and lava, precipitation (in the form of rain), wind, ice (glaciers), and barriers affect the shape of the land over time through weathering and erosion. Lesson 02: Investigating the Past: Tree Rings (5 days) This lesson focuses on tree rings. Students learn more about how the patterns of tree rings can predict past events. Students will collect data and will create their own tree ring while adding events that happened to it. Lesson 03: Investigating the Past: Sedimentary Rock (5 days) This lesson will still focus on investigating the past by looking at rock sequences and fossils. The previous lesson looked at the study of tree rings. In this lesson, the students will learn more about fossils and how they are formed. The students will also learn about rock sequences and the layers of the Earth’s surface. During this lesson the rock cycle will also be studied. Lesson 04: Constructive and Destructive Forces (5 days) This lesson will focus on constructive and destructive forces that occur on the Earth’s surface. Students will review the processes of weathering, erosion and deposition. Students will make the connections that these processes are part of either a destructive or constructive force that occur on Earth’s surface. Other examples will also be included, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. Students will learn that these examples are constructive and/or destructive forces that occur on the Earth’s surface. 6th Grade 3rd Six Weeks Lesson 01: Exploration of the Cell: Scientific Contributions, Parts, Structure and Function (12 days) Students will learn about the structure and function of cells, scientists who led to the development of the cell theory, how to use a microscope to determine that organisms are composed of cells, and how the structure of the various parts of the cell (organelles) is related to their function. They will construct a model of a cell to identify the structures within the cell and the functions of those structures. Lesson 02: In This Together: Structure, Function and Levels of Organization in Living Systems (4 days) Students will explore parts of the plant to identify how structure and function complement each other in living systems. Students will also connect structure and function to the levels of organization in living systems. Lesson 01: From Parents to Offspring (3 days) Students will witness a DNA extraction demonstration and explore traits of other students in order to interpret the role of genes in inheritance. Lesson 02: Changes in Traits (5 days) Students will observe and identify how changes occur over several generations through natural selection and selective breeding. 7th Grade 3rd Six Weeks Exemplar Lesson 01: Muscular, Skeletal, and Integumentary Systems (5 days) In this lesson, students will learn about the structure and function of the muscular, skeletal, and integumentary systems of the human body. Exemplar Lesson 02: Nervous, Digestive, and Excretory Systems (6 days) In this lesson, students will focus on the identification and function of the nervous, digestive, and excretory systems of the human body. Exemplar Lesson 03: Respiratory, Circulatory Systems and Flow of Blood (7 days) This lesson will focus on the identification and function of the respiratory, circulatory, and the systems of the human body. It will also look at the force involved in the flow of blood. It is not necessary for students to memorize all the major organs and their functions in this grade. Exemplar Lesson 04: Immune, Endocrine, and Reproductive Systems (5 days) In this lesson, students will focus on the identification and function of the immune, endocrine, and the reproductive systems of the human body. Students will also complete the unit performance indicator.
