Brookfield East’s Girls Basketball Handbook 2014-2015 Coaches for 2014-2015 Head Coach: Michael Goodman (920) 841-0115 Varsity Assistant: Bob Alcorta (414) 510-3501 JV Coach: Gabbie Zastrow (920) 723-3120 JV Assistant Coach: Lauren Murdock Freshman Coach: Kayla Moffatt (414) 640-1972 Freshman Assistant Coach: Justin Wachowiacz “I have been wounded, but not slain; I shall lie here and bleed awhile. Then I shall rise and fight again. The title of champion may fall to others more than ourselves. But the heart, the spirit, and the soul of champions will remain at Brookfield East.” The Purpose of Basketball In the School District of Elmbrook, basketball is an extra-curricular activity with the following objectives: To provide training in the fundamental basketball skills so that girls may compete on the court at a high level. To use this experience to build commitment, accountability, respect, discipline, and selflessness while at the same time, improving basketball skills in a challenging, competitive program. To enhance positive leadership skills and to understand the impact our high school student-athlete’s actions have on the actions of our younger studentathletes. To understand the benefits associated with putting one’s individual goals and aspirations beneath those of the team. To learn to act with class in the face of victory or defeat. The Levels of Girls Basketball The Junior Spartans Program Effort will be made by many individuals to give the young girls a tremendous basketball experience at a young age. Major emphasis is placed on the development of sound basketball skills. Although learning to win is important, skill development and participation are emphasized at this level. The high school coaches and players will be working closely with the Junior Spartan program. Depending on numbers, the Junior Spartan program will range from 4th Grade to 8th Grade. The Freshman Team The Freshman Team at the high school will continue to build upon the development of individual skills and basketball knowledge. The introduction to upper level basketball concepts, both offensively and defensively, will be made. They will use the same drills and terminology as the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. This exposure to the Varsity system will aid the individual player, and the program as a whole, as the players continue to develop their skills to a point where they may someday compete at the Varsity level. All girls who attend practice regularly and work diligently, will play, but not necessarily equally. The Junior Varsity Team Junior Varsity Basketball players will practice with and be expected to compete against the Varsity players. The major emphasis will be on preparing these young women to compete at the Varsity level; however an increased focus on winning establishes playing time based on roles and game situations. Game participation for every game is not a guarantee, but efforts will be made to get all players some playing time. As is true in all levels, players who are playing at the Junior Varsity level may be moved up or down as deemed appropriate by the coaching staff. The Varsity Team At this level, winning basketball games becomes the primary goal of all preparation. The time commitment at this level increases dramatically. Although each player will have a meaningful and significant role on this team, some players’ roles may be to help the team through game preparation during practice. Players who wish to play at this level must understand that it is not a right, but a privilege that must be earned. Note to Parents If, at any time, you have a question as to the treatment of your daughter during the season, first your daughter must address the problem to her coach. If there is a further question or concern, please contact Coach Goodman by phone or by email: (920) 841-0115 or Michael.t.goodman@gmail.com. We will set up a time to meet with you, your daughter, your daughter’s coach, Coach Goodman and Activities Director, Mr. Jeremy Martin. But, this will only happen if your daughter has talked to her coach first. Never during the season will we have conferences discussing playing time, strategy or philosophy as these are decisions made by the coaching staff. Practice Basketball is a team sport. A team cannot reach its potential without all of its members consistently attending practice. Players are expected to be at every practice. Missing practice for any reason other than illness, family emergency, or an event discussed with their coach (a player needs to notify her coach in these circumstances) will result in a one game suspension. Two unexcused absences will result in removal from the team. An unexcused absence is deemed as such; a player did not contact any of the coaches before the start of practice, and/or missed practice due to a circumstance other than the above examples. Players who miss practice for vacations, sports, or other family-related reasons will also miss a to-be-determined number of games, or a punishment relatable to the time being missed. These will be handled on a case-by-case manner. However, if the excused absences are getting taken advantage of, playing time will be noticeably diminished. Also, practices will be conducted in a closed-door format. We will work very hard as a staff and as players during practice preparing for each game and the rigors of the long season. We do not need any distractions. Practice time is limited and we need all the time we can get and do not want to lose any time because of outside situations. The best and only chance to watch our product is during games and scrimmages. Lettering in Girls Basketball Athletes shall earn a letter in girls’ basketball when they meet the following criteria: For Seniors: o Display a positive attitude as an individual and towards the team o Finish the season For Underclassmen: o The above requirements, as well as... o Compete in at least a quarter of the Varsity games, unless it was coach’s decision NOTE: At the discretion of the coaches, a letter may be awarded if an individual has displayed consistently outstanding effort, but may not have met the above requirements. Post Season Awards At the end of the season, there will be numerous awards given out to the participants on the Varsity team. The Captain’s Award will be given to the selected captains. These six awards are measurable awards and will be given to the appropriate player: Most Points, Most Rebounds, Most Assists, Most Steals, Best Free Throw Percentage, and Most Three-Pointers Made. There will also be an MVP award and a Spirit Award and these will be thoroughly talked about, discussed, and decided upon amongst the coaching staff Guidelines for Players The Activities Code All athletes, parents, administrators and staff members shall follow the provisions of the Activities Code as adopted by the School Board. Violations by student-athletes will affect and limit participation as per the standards of the Activities Code. Basketball is a team sport and a player who has a code violation is acting selfishly and without consideration for her teammates. Because of this, players who wish to remain on the team following a violation may, at the discretion of the coaching staff, be subject to extra conditioning and/or games suspended. School Conduct As athletes, you are in a much more visible position than many students who are non-athletes. For this reason, it is imperative that you act in a way that you, your teammates, and your families can be proud of. Oftentimes, inappropriate actions by some non-athletes that go unnoticed or without consequence will not if an athlete does the same thing. Make sure you never put yourself in a situation where this could happen. Detentions- Players who receive a detention of any type will be subject to a minimum of a ½ game suspension. Circumstances surrounding the detention will dictate the severity of the suspension. In-School Suspension- A student-athlete who is assigned an in-school suspension will be suspended for one game. A second in-school suspension may result in removal from the team. Team Selection Cuts can/will possibly be made at any time during the tryouts. Each year tryouts will range for a different amount of time. Team selection will be done by the coaching staff in a meeting individually with the player. Captain Selection Captains will be chosen by the players going into the playoffs. Prior to this, each player will have a chance to be a captain throughout the season at least once. Captaincy will be based upon attitude, attendance, and leadership capabilities for the high school program. If you are chosen as captain, you need to represent the team in a positive way and be the classiest of all. You need to be aware of the ultimate goal of the program and help to get us there, but also be the voices of the team, so if something needs to be related to coach, it is your job to do so. If any of the rules are broken by a captain, it will be on a case-by-case manner, and the captaincy may be removed. Social Networking In this day-in-age with technology at our fingertips, players need to be aware of the possible pitfalls they can fall into with social networking sites. Please use common sense when it comes to posting anything on the internet, visual or written. Players will not post anything on a social networking site bad mouthing a teammate, a coach, the program, or even an opposing team. A player who chooses to do this will be suspended for one game and depending on the severity, may result in the removal of the team. Care of Equipment It is the players’ responsibility to wear and take care of the provided equipment for the season. We represent and respect our school, and that will be shown in our apparel. Practice jerseys are to be worn every day for practice; for varsity, individual travel gear will be worn for home and away games while JV and Freshman will decide as a team what to wear. Daily Practice Guidelines Be on time. Practices are scheduled for 6:00 am or 5:30 pm on the calendar. If you are not on the court, ready to go, by 5:25 pm, you are late. Know what you can do and do it well. Know what you can’t do and work to improve this skill. If school is cancelled due to inclement weather, school board policy indicates that the Varsity team may practice. Coaches will let players know when those practices are. The locker room will be kept clean. Anything left on the floor will give everyone some extra conditioning opportunities. Take pride in what we have and who we are. You will experience some aches and pains at some point during the year. You need to know the difference between being hurt and being injured. If you are hurt, play through it. If you are injured, you need to tell a coach immediately. Be ready to learn. Understand that coaches are here to make you better. Listen to and do what they say. Lifting Sessions are part of practice. Lift with your teammates. Don’t be late. Our success as a program will largely be determined by each player’s ability to give themselves fully to the team. If everyone does this, we will be successful. Game Day Guidelines Players will dress as a team for games. The varsity team will have individual travel gear that is worn on game days for both home games and away games. The JV and Freshman attire will be decided upon amongst the team, but we will be looking nice. You must be in school before lunch in order to play. This will not become habit. Generally speaking, if you are too sick to be in school, you are too sick to play. Concentrate on your studies during the day. You will have plenty of time to think about the game after school. Cell phones will be collected for both home and road games. For road games, when the girls board the bus, they will hand over their cell phone. They will get it back when they depart from the bus when we return. For home games, I will collect the Varsity team’s cell phones when they arrive at 5:30 pm. This is nonnegotiable. You will give your full attention to the team and the program before, during, and after the games. I have seen too many instances where a girl instantly reaches for her phone as soon as she gets off the court or the practice/game has ended. Junior Varsity players should be at the gym by 5:00 for home games. Varsity players should be at the gym at 5:30. Varsity players will sit together during the JV game. This is a time to begin focusing on the upcoming game and show support for our fellow Spartans. You will not sit with boyfriends and/or other friends during this time. On road trips, you may visit quietly with people around you, but keep the noise down. All players will ride home on the bus with the team. You are representing yourself, your team, and your school all the time, but especially when you are on the road. Who are we? 1. Academics come first 2. Be early 3. Always compete at the highest level 4. Listen and Learn 5. Do not talk to nor react to the officials 6. Make the simple play 7. Do your job 8. Huddle up as a team on free throws 9. Run to time-outs; Run to the locker room 10. Chase perfection, but settle for excellence along the way 11. Be mentally tough 12. Control your emotions, but embrace your passion 13. Root for your teammates while on bench 14. Be respectful of everyone in our program 15. Attitude of gratitude- say “thank you” 16. Look people in the eye when communicating 17. Be a role model off the floor 18. Be humble in victory, gracious in defeat 19. Speak highly of your opponents 20. Take pride in yourself, your teammates, your equipment, and your program
