2015-16 Boys Basketball Things to Know Expectations for the Players • Players are expected to be at ALL practices and games. • The only exceptions are if there is a sickness or pre-arranged event that was communicated between the coach and player. • Please call or text one of the coaches so everyone is informed of the absence. • Attend the holiday break practices during Thanksgiving and Christmas. • Players need to demonstrate effort, respect, and a good attitude as well as be willing to accept instructional coaching. • Players are expected to keep grades above a 2.0 GPA with “no surprises” when having a grade check. • We expect the whole program to behave in a respectable manner and ably to the school conduct policy no matte in school, road trips, or outside of school away from the team. Coach-Parent Communication • Whenever there is an issue or question about playing time or any basketball related issue, please encourage your son to approach and communicate with his coach to resolve the issue. • If you are still not satisfied, please contact me or coach McKeon through email and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Coach-Player Communication • Open Door of Communication • All players are ENCOURAGED to communicate with their coach about their role on the team OR any issues that are happening in their lives that they need to talk about. • However, we want YOU, the player to talk with your coach about how you can improve your status. • Parents are welcomed to talk to coaches, but we highly recommend that a player approach a coach by himself before there is any parent involvement. Grades • The coaches will do everything possible to stay up to date on the player’s grades, but we expect the players to be proactive. • Any concerns we will contact the parents or vise-versa. • Grade checks during basketball season: • • • • • December 8- Mid Term December 18- Update if the player failed a class on Dec 10th January 22 (End of Semester) February 9th- Update if the player failed a class on Jan. 24th March 1st (Determines status for playoffs and state) Games • We like all players to wear a shirt and tie for all games. The goal is to look presentable and set a good example for the school. • For all home or crosstown games, players please arrive in the gym seated by the time the previous game is to begin. • • Example: Varsity players would arrive by 5:45 for the JV game. • Freshmen or sophomore with no game ahead of theirs please be an hour early. We like to see all who are not on varsity to attend the varsity game. I feel it is a big opportunity to learn as well as support the other kids. Away Games • Please have the players ride home on the bus with the team whenever possible. We like to keep the players to be together after a game regardless of the outcome. • If you like to sign your son out, please make sure to notify and have an administrator sign off before we leave for the game. • After the player has received permission from the administrator, please inform your coach as soon as possible so they are aware. Eating on Away Games • JV/Varsity will eat when we arrive to our destination. Usually a sit down restaurant. • Sophomores and freshmen will eat after their game which will be during the Varsity game. • After the Varsity game, the whole program will stop at a grocery store on the way out of town. Player Discipline • Any broken rules by the players will be followed by the consequences set by the MCPS district handbook. • However, when a player returns to the team the following will be expected. • Apologize to the team. • Conference with the player, coach, parent, and if necessary the administrator. • Players must earn their position/ starting spot back over time through trust and learning from their mistakes. It will NOT be based off ability. • Anything outside the handbook will be addressed the same way with a possible suspension as a consequence. Playing Outside the Season • My goal for this program is to make it fun and exciting for the players and hope they will crave basketball year round. • Even though many players are involved in other sports, and I encourage them to be actively involved. • I cannot stress to you how important it is that they attend open gyms in the fall and/or spring as well as play summer basketball.
