Explanatory Notes

Definitions:
 Translate means to convey the sense of the passage using correct English
vocabulary, observing correct English accidence, syntax and grammatical
conventions, and demonstrating overall understanding of English idiom, eg
ablative absolute – ‘pecunia rapta’ translated as ‘after snatching the money’.
 Showing understanding of the passage means that the student can convey the
sense of the passage, although some sections may be less accurately translated
than others. There may be errors in translating Latin vocabulary, idiom and
accidence (such as lack of agreement between singular and plural, use of
incorrect tense, and use of the positive rather than the superlative), or errors in
syntax (such as failing to recognise a ‘cum clause’ correctly). Errors should not
significantly distort the meaning of the Latin translation.
 A detailed understanding of the passage means that while the translation may
contain some errors, these will not detract from its overall fluency.
 A comprehensive understanding of the passage means that the translation will be
error-free, or almost entirely so.

The passage for translation will be elementary narrative Latin prose of approximately
100 words.

The passage will be adapted as necessary to conform to the accidence and syntax in
the prescribed list for Level 1 (see Appendix 2 – http://www.tki.org.nz/ncea).

The prescribed word list will be provided (see Appendix 1 –
http://www.tki.org.nz/ncea). Words additional to the prescribed list will be glossed
(printed in bold in the passage and listed below the passage in order of appearance).
No further reference material may be used during assessment.
