A major error is one in syntax, distorting the meaning of the sentence, eg a
purpose clause instead of a result clause.
A minor error is one of accidence, eg singular/plural, incorrect tense, positive for
superlative.
Natural English implies the observation of English word order and grammatical
conventions eg ‘Caesar, cum …’ translated as ‘When Caesar …’, ablative absolute
- ‘pecunia rapta’ translated as ‘after snatching the money’.
2
The passage for translation will be elementary Latin narrative prose of 120-150 words.
It will be adapted as necessary to conform to the accidence and syntax in the prescribed
list for Level 1 (see Appendix 2 - http://www.tki.org.nz/ncea).
3
The prescribed word list will be provided (see Appendix 1 - http://www.tki.org.nz/ncea).
Additional vocabulary will be glossed. No further reference material may be used.
